ARCHIVED Not Good News For Rice Eaters!
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
eh? I don't understand the relation. I probably wasn't clear enough - my point being that the rice, even with a partiuclar barley gene, could be entirely gluten free. There couldn't be a reaction to gluten, in that case, because there wouldn't be any gluten in the rice. Of course, if the nitrogen-fixing genes were near the protein-encoding genes, you... -
ARCHIVED Not Good News For Rice Eaters!
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
While I'm not a fan of GMO's, and stay away from them whenever possible (it's harder than it should be!), and while the GMO process is not as precise as the GMO manufacturers would like us to belive, it's important to keep in mind that there are a lot of genes that go into a barley plant, and that vast majority of them do not code for the protein that bothers... -
ARCHIVED Reintroduced Gluten--change In Blood Test
tarnalberry replied to Helena's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
keep in mind that some celiacs do react to oats, even "gluten-free" oats. (the oat protein, avenin, is structurally similar to the wheat protein, gliandin.) I believe the number is about 10%. but if you don't have obvious outward symptoms, it'll be hard for you to know if you're reacting to it or not. -
ARCHIVED Does Anystill Eat Gluten?
tarnalberry replied to uhmanduh's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
It does suck that the diet isn't more convenient. But you can plan while you're at home to have things you can take with you so that you won't feel as deprived. Yeah, you're going to stand out a bit, there's no way to really help that entirely. It just kinda sucks. (It does get you out of eating the cake someone made that's really nasty tasting, though... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Test Results Help
tarnalberry replied to KGMaggie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You've got it right - your test are inconclusive. Sometimes, we don't get straight answers from our bloodwork. Hopefully the other two tests you're waiting on will be illuminating, but in the meantime, you can try the gluten-free diet (for at least a month, strict adherence) and see what the results of that test are. (It is a valid diagnostic test as well... -
ARCHIVED Glutening Symptoms
tarnalberry replied to slpinsd's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Takes me a full week to recover, and I'll have intestinal pain, on and off, that whole time. -
ARCHIVED Celiac Challenge
tarnalberry replied to vampella's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I haven't seen a peanut butter with gluten, but ALWAYS read the label before you actually buy it. (Yeah, makes the trip to the store take longer... I know. ) I prefer natural peanut butters myself, but Jiff and Skippy have been called out as gluten-free on the board before. (Still, ALWAYS read the label. ) Cross-contamination would come from home -... -
ARCHIVED Does Anystill Eat Gluten?
tarnalberry replied to uhmanduh's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Not I. Not worth the increased risk of nutritional deficiencies (including anemia and osteoporosis ), increased risk of cancer (including colon and lymphoma), the increased risk of other autoimmune diseases (like thyroid disease and diabetes), and definitely not worth the - on average - 10 years it will take off my life if I eat gluten as often as once... -
ARCHIVED Optimistic...
tarnalberry replied to Scheherazade's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome. I'm sorry you're having such a tough time finding the energy to go gluten free. Unfortunately, you're not likely to notice much change until you do go entirely gluten free. Maybe if you take some time to mentally prepare - figure out what you would eat the next week, instead of making the shift, you'll be better prepared for it? I generally... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Stored In The Fat And Tissues?
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My point is that, molecularly, toxins and proteins are different. Storing a toxin, which is generally a much much smaller molecule, in the body - and many of them are fat-soluble - is a totally different thing than storing a protein. It's like saying "oh, yeah, I have a garage I park my car in, so bring your giant motorhome over and we can park it in there... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Challenge
tarnalberry replied to vampella's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Because they think the diet is so damnably hard, no one will actually stick with it. There's plenty of evidence to show that many people don't stick with it - but a lot of them aren't getting a lot of support, I think, and the ease of sticking with the diet increases every year. -
ARCHIVED Reintroduced Gluten--change In Blood Test
tarnalberry replied to Helena's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
the positive tTg test means that your intestines are being damaged. when you went back on gluten, it went up, showing that they were indeed getting damaged from the gluten. I think that's a pretty clear sign that you do need to avoid all gluten - even the Rice Dream. even if you don't feel outward symptoms, doing regular damage to your intestines, even... -
ARCHIVED Need Tips On Negotiating A Car
tarnalberry replied to debmidge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I didn't know you could really negotiate on a lease. Cool. I'm not a big fan of leases (though I see the appeal in your situation and have friends who prefer leasing over buying), so I don't have specific advice on lease negotiations, but have two pieces of advice (well, two and a half) for any negotiations: 1. expect to pay more than your first offer... -
ARCHIVED Brr... My Hands Are Frozen...
tarnalberry replied to Kody's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There are a handful of things mainstream docs will check you for if your hands are consistently very cold (uncomfortably so, painfully so) in situations where they shouldn't be (70 degree rooms, places where everyone else's hands are fine, where the rest of you is plenty warm). In a situations like that, I wouldn't just pass it off as nothing, and would... -
You're right about the location change, but I had forgotten about the name change. I think they're still dealing with gluten-free foods, but it's out of my range, so haven't been there.

ARCHIVED So How Does "the World" Look Upon Enterolab?
tarnalberry replied to Yenni's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Even though I think it's partially a money thing (even if he's not personally making money off of it, but trying to set something up financially for the business) regarding the timing of releasing studies that would have to define methodology, I don't think he's scamming anyone. I think that the premise of his methodology will eventally be proven, actually... -
There are a couple of options - Kali's Kitchen and Flying Apron Bakery along with Outback and PF Chang's and Z'Tejas, plus a couple other places I can't remember at the moment. Even the Sunlight Cafe near Ravenna is good. (Elliot Bay Book Company could even be an interesting place for a date, and they have a cafe downstairs that serves Flying Apron goods...

ARCHIVED Modified Corn Starch
tarnalberry replied to vampella's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
modified corn starch is made from corn. the one you have to worry about is modified food starch (unlabled 'food starch') but that, these days, should have a "contains wheat" statement in some fashion or another on the label due to the labeling laws. -
ARCHIVED So How Does "the World" Look Upon Enterolab?
tarnalberry replied to Yenni's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think there's a two-fold problem with Enterolab - the medical profession is slow to change and accept new things, and Dr. Fine is trying to promote a business. He hasn't published studies or information on his particular process, so the doctors are skeptical, and I think part of his reason is a desire to keep his business going as well as possible (my... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Stored In The Fat And Tissues?
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
yes, there is evidence that LSD and some other chemicals can be stored in the body for extended periods of time (I believe it's stored somewhere along the spinal cord, actually). the chicken pox virus can hide in portions of the body and reappear later (causing shingles). and some toxins - like mercury - can be stored in fat. but chemically speaking, LSD... -
elligal, how long have you been on the topamax? it took ... four or five months for the fatigue issues to resolve, but they did lessen for me. (of course, with winter coming up, and much shorter days, that brings it's own fatigue issues... ) anyway, I'm glad it's helping, even if there are annoying side effects.

ARCHIVED Can I Slap Them ? Please ?!
tarnalberry replied to Mamato2boys's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Cases like this make me wonder if you can schedule a meeting with all of the people who work with your son there and talk to them. NOT just a talk TO them, but one that involves asking them questions and getting responses from them. A true teaching session. I'd include questions like "Someone asked him if he wanted Cheerios. Why was that wrong from a... -
ARCHIVED Can You Get Accurate Blood Tests 3 Weeks Off Of Gluten?
tarnalberry replied to CantEvenEatRice's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I believe that the two weeks I was off gluten was enough to give me inconclusive results. Doctors will say it's not - though some will say it could affect it. It all depends on your body, it's ability to heal, and how damaged it was. (The long winded way of saying "there's no good way to be sure".) It could very well affect the tests, but there's a small... -
I think it's time you had a talk with her, because she's either completely stupid when it comes to human interaction, or playing some sort of head game. Of course, the appropriate response is for you to not give her an answer - "I haven't eaten pizza in so long, I couldn't tell you." and "Well, I'm not a good person to bounce this off of, and I'd prefer...

ARCHIVED Thanksgiving Blues
tarnalberry replied to KrisT's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Growing up, my dad always made the sweet potatoes with marshmallows on top. I thought I HATED sweet potatoes, 'cause that stuff was awful. Turns out, it's just cooking it that way. Sweet potatoes are fabulous, but adding marshmallows? IMHO, YUCK!
