  1. congrats!! glad to hear you're doing so much better!
  2. I don't know about the diapers specifically, though I'm certain you can be allergic or have skin reactions to certain brands, I would *not* continue exposing him to known allergens even while on antihistamines. It's just going to make the situation worse.
  3. For everyone who's family goes crazy over 'tradition', remind them of the quote: A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds. -Emerson
  4. Starch is starch, protein is protein, and in theory, if you can separate the wheat protein from the wheat starch, you can have wheat starch that is gluten free, just as tom-in-va said. The process is the problem. They do seem to be able to do this to CODEX standards (which I don't think are stringent enough), and I thought down to 20ppm, but I don't remember...
  5. a nasal rinse, as described, is probably good, but given the constant coughing and sore ears, I'd consider an antihistamine to dry up the sinuses (which are probably causing the ear pain). if the cough is productive, though, an expectorant, like guifenissen, is a better choice than something to dry you out. and hot showers!
  6. It often amazes me why more people don't intrisically see it that way to start with, but, as you note, many people think of food through emotionally-colored lenses, only they don't realize they do so.
  7. Hopefully, they'll allow cookies and cupcakes and cakes that are under 40% fat and are healthy! It amazes me how many people are unwilling to modify their recipes to make things healthy, but man... it can be tasty!
  8. it can be 'porous' for some things once it's been in the oven - particularly fats. that's the concern I was noting - if there's wheat on it *at the same time* and the item *on the paper* has enough fat that it will soak through the paper, and that part of the paper was touching something glutening, it might be a problem. but those are all things that can...
  9. nope, nothing much stops it for me, but coughing probably isn't going to help much, in that it will just tense up other abdominal muscles that won't necessarily be good for you in the long run (something I've learned the hard way, having under-treated cough-variant asthma). eh... it's fairly 'normal' body noises (in a little more than normal quantity/volume...
  10. I track a number of 'symptoms' (knee pain, vulvar pain, headaches, mood, energy, etc.) along with my temperature chart for fertility tracking, and can look back at when I get migraines and old weather patterns. I thought to do that after talking to an aunt, who has the same issue, and after looking at some other websites about less common migraine triggers...
  11. Find places that have kitchens (bed and breakfasts often do) and go to grocery stores and cook - you'll still have you're home cooked meals!
  12. it means he's producing antibodies against the wheat protein, but doesn't have severe enough intestinal damage to show antibodies against his own tissue in the bloodstream. I'd still vote for trying the gluten free diet, despite the doctor's "advice".
  13. I bring my own food. I also often double as a backup photographer, so that keeps me busy. But I just take my own food, and eat it at the table with everyone else.
  14. Are we talking as a barrier for a cookie sheet that has been used in the past for gluten containing things, but isn't being replaced though it's thoroughly washed? Or a barrier for a cookie sheet that actively has fresh wheat products right on it? In the case of the former, I'm going to say yes, but in the case of the later, not if the item being cooked...
  15. yes, according to studies, eating gluten approximately once a month leaves you at the same risk for the nasty complications as not being gluten free at all. you CAN do it! take one problem at a time, and solve each one on its own. in three months, you may find it comes easier if you've really tackled the problems systematically.
  16. Foods are a common trigger and many on here find their migraines go away gluten free, or after eliminating whatever other intolerance they find may be contributing to the problem - be is dairy, soy, egg, nightshade, peanut, etc. But some of us do still have migraines that are triggered by non-food items, and the dietary changes haven't helped that. Some...
  17. They suggested you keep him home?!?! That's horrid. My condolences on having to deal with idiots.
  18. Because many - studies suggest the majority - celiacs do not have the common GI symptoms. They may not have any symptoms but anemia, or osteoporosis, or diabetes, or an autoimmune thyroid condition. That's one of the things that makes celiac so difficult to diagnose, the wide variety of presentations.
  19. That's so wonderful they thought of you.
  20. 2-3 months is quite likely to affect your results. and I'm not certain that psychosematic effects hold that strong for that long, but who knows. honestly, and most people do *not* support this advice, but I would, in this situation, do a gluten challenge. I'd eat a day or two or three of gluten (just one meal if I reacted then, a couple days if it took...
  21. If potato and sweet potato are out, and you don't want corn chips, you might look into getting a dehydrator and making your own 'chips'. Be it carrot, or flax seeds, or something else. This'll also let you have any flavor you want!
  22. Welcome. I don't have really anything else useful to add, other than to be very diligent in tracking down *all* sources of gluten exposure - not just bread, of course. Keep reading, keep posting, and good luck trying the diet. Let your doctor know what you're doing, but you certainly don't need permission to change your diet. As for the meds, I don...
  23. I'm sorry so many people are having such a rough time of Thanksgiving. Brizzo, definitely bring something you can safely eat with you, so you don't have to go hungry, and let them go wacko, being FULLY SECURE in the knowledge that you are doing EXACTLY what you need to do to stay HEALTHY.
  24. Welcome! This is a fab place, filled with helpful, friendly people! I'm glad to hear that you're getting the hang of the diet so quickly, and that it's helping.
  25. Glad he caught that! I know the ones you're talking about, and they are fooling!
