  1. Congratulations!!!! I'm envious! I <3 NorCal.
  2. lol you made me feel better about my posts. I'm always waiting for you guys, because I just cannot do the "aw... I'm sorry you feel bad... here, let's be supportive and have a big e-group-hug" thing. (And it really seems like, especially the first couple of frantic posts, that's what the newbies need the most, the reassurance that it's going to be ok...
  3. the soy milk could be a problem if you're sensitive to soy. I wouldn't say I'm intolerant to soy, but too much makes me gassy and affects my digestion. I can have ~1 serving 5 times a week or so.
  4. I'm sorry that it was so painful, but glad that you won't cheat again! Hope you're feeling tip top again soon!
  5. I did a home-stay (not exchange, because no one from the family I stayed with came over here afterwards) when I was 10 in France, going through NACEL. That was *FABULOUS*. Good luck finding a family to stay with!
  6. No one can answer these questions for you. You just have to go for it. Maybe they'll turn you down, but no one can say for sure. Not only is Kaiser different in different locations, but it varies by the doctor as well. Don't worry about what people will think about you, worry about how your health!
  7. Lactose free isn't dairy free. They still contain casein.
  8. A bit. The hormone changes, especially progesterone, affect the bowel. Fairly normal.
  9. You'll find your way around it! I enjoy potatoes, but hardly ever have them. Time to check out more fun options. Hopefully, other root vegetables are an option - like carrots, turnips, rutabegas, and so on.
  10. Tell them he's got tendonitis or carpal tunnel issues and that he needs a special keyboard (that the woman won't use), and they'll be required by law to get him a special keyboard and mouse. (I always have an MS Natural keyboard (the split type) and a finger-based (not thumb) track-ball at work.) It is legal (assuming he has to type often and his wrists...
  11. I also have not had any issues with the Ancient Harvest Quinoa/Corn pasta.
  12. And wear a hat! (Keeps body heat in the body. )
  13. You can't have antibodies to a substance in your blood (which is what the tests are for) if you don't have the substance in your body. (Does she suggest that you'll test positive for an AIDS test even if you don't have AIDS? That screening test is looking for antibodies, not the virus itself. Sheesh. I hate it when doctors are inconsistent!)
  14. I avoid these items. In theory, the gluten should be consumed by the metabolic processes of the plant by the time it reaches the stage where they're getting at the grasses (leaves?? the plants are grasses), but it's an asymptotic approach, and I personally have no desire to risk my intestinal health on someone else guessing when it's "close enough" to being...
  15. It comes down to what YOU think is best. If you want her on a gluten-free diet and your parents won't comply when she's there, that's awfully presumptive and disrespectful of them, and she doesn't need to stay with them. She's on gluten right now, and if you need the biopsy to keep her on the diet, then get it done and out of the way, but if she's positive...
  16. You can't evaluate it on it's own. What have you been eating? Are you getting the right amount of minerals/salts to go along with that quantity of water?
  17. Both conditions are covered by the ADA, so they're wrong saying that it's not sufficient reason for accomodation. You may want to converse with a lawyer about your options.
  18. Many people never develop anaphylactic reactions to allergenic foods that they are sensitive to. It's best not to continue exposing him to it, but it means that you don't have to be as paranoid about, for example, someone in the same room eating peanuts, so long as he doesn't eat any. I don't have any suggestions of substitutes, other than looking into...
  19. I link the sig's with long lists of conditions actually do a diservice to newbies - they may encourage a newbie to think that everything is related to celiac, when we all to often have to fight off the temptation to think just that on this board. Not to mention it eats up an awful lot of screen real estate. That said, it's a personal decision, and as such...
  20. I'm very sorry for your loss.
  21. Try taking lactaid before having cheese - it's been so long since you've had any dairy, you're probably not producing any lactase at all. If you still have problems, it's probably the casein.
  22. I can't post names, 'cause I'll forget someone and add five more posts saying "oh god, I forgot this person", and feel really guilty about it. Really, it's everyone. We all learn so much from each other, and we stick with each other through the good days and the bad and the eh-whatevers. gold stars for everyone. well, whatever color star you want...
  23. you're chances of finding a premade one with those requirements are low - I've never found one, and I've looked. you can get protein powder made from rice, or hemp, or eggs, or pea, or a quinoa/millet/amaranth mix, for making your own.
  24. They make a few which aren't, so you have to read the labels, and realize that there's room for cross contamination given that they aren't a totally gluten-free company, but they otherwise should be fine.
  25. some dairy if she can have it, and since she's 1, some eggs, some nuts (almonds are good), some soy, and some protein powders. mix it up and don't rely on any one thing in a day. (rice and hemp protein powders are available - I use both in smoothies.)
