  1. I put all kinds of fruits in my smoothies. Almost always bananas, but otherwise, varieties of berries, pineapple, mango, papaya... anything. Sometimes I'll add soy yogurt or soy milk, but usually not. Sometimes I'll add coconut milk for fat, and sometimes rice or hemp protein powder.
  2. Welcome. It really can be overwhelming at first. After all, you're kinda faced with a "forget everything you've ever known" sort of thing, if this is the first time you've heard of the condition. Things in the UK are a little different than in the US (better, in some ways, it seems, worse in others), but no matter what, it's just going to take some time...
  3. it certainly isn't stored in your fat - gluten is a protein. and I have seen no good evidence to suggest that it is stored in your body for any length of time (most proteins are not), assuming it gets out of the digestive system (antibodies are one thing, proteins another). I'm disinclined to believe it, myself.
  4. I was just gluten-free for a year before I was Gluten-free Casein-free and had kefir all the time. Man, that stuff was good. I never found one that wasn't gluten-free, but that was two years ago, and it certainly could happen. I got the brand my store carried that wasn't Lifeway (can't remember the name - got that one because it's the one they carried...
  5. If it turns out that your child is celiac (and that can be very difficult to determine, with clinical tests, prior to age 2), your wife must eat gluten free if she is going to breast feed - and breast feeding is best for celiac babies just like any other (assuming gluten-free breastmilk).
  6. I make a brown and wild rice based stuffing with mushrooms. Quite tasty. (In my recipes post.)
  7. I came across articles from two studies today with some useful results for some recent topics: Open Original Shared Link (Basically says that supplementing with base minerals, to increase body pH, can help increase bone density in some cases. The test used potassium citrate, compared against potassium chloride. The results were not huge, but were noticeable...
  8. these are the sorts of things I'm thinking of that can be very hit or miss. my grandmother got us a blanket much like this. I know she meant well, and I VERY much appreciate the thought behind it and her intentions. but it's soooooo not us. it's in a closet somewhere and has never seen the light of day. I will always remember what she meant by the gift...
  9. many people are asymptomatic, on the outside. unfortunately, you're still getting damage on the inside, which means you're still in an autoimmune reaction state, you're still getting inflammation, and you're still increasing your risks for cancer, osteoporosis, and secondary autoimmune conditions, unless you completely eliminate gluten. it's harder if you...
  10. lol... for my wedding, I was rather afraid that some close friend or family member would say "oh, I don't want to get them some boring old thing off the registry" and get me something different. *shudder* then we'd end up with something that, while well meant, either fit just one of our tastes, or was close to something we'd like, but not quite there, because...
  11. yah.... zinc is also vital for bone formation. you'll probably want to do a fair amount of research into the complimentary minerals needed for bone formation. the good news is that, from what I've read and what people on the board here have said, if it's a nutritional deficiency, and given your age, I would think that there are very good odds for significant...

    ARCHIVED Doctor Vs. Test Results

Especially with the low numbers that enterolab found, I'd bet that a standard blood test would show you quite negative and wouldn't bother. but that's my own opinion about what I would do in the situation.
  13. I'm sorry about the results, but I know many people here are battling that proble, regardless of age. Don't forget to get magnesium and D with that calcium (studies showing magnesium possibly MORE important than calcium for celiacs), and weight bearing exercise, as recommended by the doc.
  14. not all malt is made from barley. it's *definitely* worth checking, but I thought they used rice malt, for some reason.
  15. turn that frown upside down? ooo... rush of blood to the head! ('cause you're upside down!) hope you're feeling better goosey, 'cause worms, unless they're gummi, are *not edible*.
  16. yep, it's not even a grain, but technically a fruit.
  17. dairy, eggs, seafood... according to a google search.
  18. actually, if you look at the studies of osteoporisis in celiacs, you'll see a couple studies that note that magnesium intake may be more important than calcium intake for celiacs. make sure you're getting at *least* a 2:1 calcium to magnesium ratio, and don't skimp on the D and zinc. and don't skimp on the weight bearing exercise either.
  19. if it's DH, don't forget to significantly reduce iodine intake for a couple weeks/months, as iodine is part of the reaction that creates the deposits that lead to DH.
  20. Not good, and usually not effective either. Continuing to adjust your diet and exercise will eventually work - but you have to be dedicated about it, and willing to experiment to figure out what will work for you. Are you certain that you have a sufficient calorie deficit and that you are doing enough weight bearing exercise to lose fat and are taking into...
  21. I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty getting a diagnosis. I'd like to note, however, that an inconclusive test is *NOT* the same as a negative test. It does NOT mean that you don't have it. It means that the test can't tell if you do or if you don't. I skipped the biopsy, and am in the US, so I can't tell you if it's worth it or how long it will...
  22. Would you prefer they totally ignored it? Would you prefer they had you bring your own food? Would you prefer that you just not eat at all in group functions? Or are you really wishing you didn't have this and hence would be singled out in group settings? Which I think we all feel from time to time. If it's one of the first three (and I can...
  23. gluten-free pancakes, fruit, and hardboiled eggs! (well, that's what I like, anyway. )
  24. Don't forget, restaurants are providing you a service. You're allowed to be a little bit demanding.
  25. Practice? Maybe even trail runs with friends? Assertive but nice is just a style that takes some practice. Being patient and organized helps, hence the practice. Dining cards (Triumph makes good ones) can help, as can calling ahead of time, or talking to the manager away from the table in a less pressured area.
