  1. Yep, it gets used - helps browning too, I think. Anyway, it's one of those reasons why you always have to read the labels before buying. Sudden recipe changes are another reason. :-)

  7. Mag does cause D - you can balance that with calcium (which has the opposite effect). Spreading it throughout the day in multiple doses (even if you have to split the pills) is probably your best bet. And taking it with food.
  8. Yep - if I consume gluten regularly, I have C. Single events of gluten, spaced out over months, cause D for me. But prior to diagnosis, it was C.
  9. Interesting... I find fruit works much better for me than something grain based. (Grains are more likely to be unpredictable with my blood sugar than fruit.)
  10. In the 'compromise case', I wasn't referring to the breast feeding reducing the chance of developing celiac disease, but the introduction of gluten in the child's diet between the ages of 6 months and 9 months reducing celiac disease.

  12. just like any other hot cereal - mix with water or a milk (or milk-sub) and heat. on the stove or in the microwave. (the box should have instructions as well.) I think I used 1/4 cup quinoa flakes to 1 cup liquid, but it might be a bit less liquid than that.

The difference between celiac and pretty much all the other autoimmune diseases is that the autoimmune trigger (gluten) is known and external to the body.   15. oat bran is, by calorie, 25% protein, 25% fat. 50% of it is still carbs. I keep frozen meat around - mostly shrimp, because I can get it cooked, and heat it up in the microwave with tomato soup for a quick meal. (add some lentils, you've got a full meal.) frozen shrimp/boxed soup - stuff you can keep on hand for months and hence stock up on.
  16. I think the problem is that pictures only give you 50% of the story. The other part is consistency and smell, which you can only tell... in other ways. I'm certainly not going to have samples for reference for either of those two senses. But it would certainly be better than nothing!
  17. camping! how to deal with gluten free foods camping, both backbacking or car camping. (whole foods, tillamook, and oberto all make gluten-free beef jerky, if you don't want to make your own!) since it's every two months, the cookout idea could be 4th of july themed, even!

I hate the idea of permanent dye - anything that won't wash out - so that sounds idea. I wonder what roobois tea would do... fab ideas! I thought the Kool-aid didn't come out easily, though?

  20. I've thought about dying my hair... Fruity hippie granola type that I am, however, I don't want to use harsh chemicals, and I sure don't need my hair getting frizzier! I've got some henna (of the slightly reddish variety, to add a small tint), but am worried about dying my skin along with my hair, and have been too chicken to try it. Maybe I can pay one...
  21. It'll be fine, though I'd put the gluten-free items on the top rack and the non-gluten-free items on the bottom, if you're using two racks, just to minimize contamination concerns.

Perhaps we can 'make everyone happy', by saying that, if you choose to not introduce any solids for the first year, in the case where the mother doesn't have celiac disease (but she or the father is a carrier), she is gluten free until some point between 6 and 9 months, at which point she introduces wheat into her diet, which will get gluten into the breast...
  23. You said you've taken him off wheat... Have you taken him off the other sources of gluten - barley, rye, and oats? Have you eliminated gluten from hidden ingredients (modified food starch, soy sauce, etc.)? Have you eliminated cross-contamination - shared toaters, cutting boards, etc.?

(I've been using eco-friendly (non-petroleum based) liquid detergent for a number of years, and that stuff works great on all my clothes, and most of it is 'delicate/hand wash' due to fabric type.) the...
  25. Dry cleaning is funny... you don't normally need to do it even when clothing labels say you should. Companies will use the exact same fabric and put 'dry clean only' on the stuff that's made into women's clothes, and 'cold wash only, do not dry' on the stuff made into men's clothes. The dryer is torture on a lot of fabrics, of course, but I don't dry clean...
