  1. a wheat allergy and a wheat intolerance are two different things. an allergy test will detect the former, but not the later. the later can cause celiac disease, but you can be intolerant without having any of the diagnostics for celiac disease.
  2. It's fairly well known that scratch tests for food allergies are NOT very precise. They can be flat out wrong, or just give you the wrong idea of how bad the allergy is. They are used as a starting point only. I would encourage you to find out if this doctor is with the Americal Acadamy of Allergists and Immunologists. (I think that's the name.) Yes...
  3. The doctor can still run the tests without you having a biopsy. He is providing a service for you, after all.
  4. From what I recall, celiacs and t1 diabetics generally produce too much zonulin in general, but it would primarily be, it seems, for instances when you accidentally get gluten, so that it doesn't further increase zonulin production and get out into the bloodstream. That's what I recall anyway. Hopefully the press releases on the studies will be a bit more...
  5. It's a case by case thing depending on the people inviting me, the size of the gathering, and what's going on in my life at the moment. I almost always go, the question is whether or not I'll eat, and that's what varies.
  6. I'm not really sure I understand how it's going to be that helpful. It's supposed to keep the "junctions" between cells in the gut "tight" so that molecules don't get through to the bloodstream that shouldn't. That means gluten and gluten antibodies won't get into the blood stream - which is good, of course - but it doesn't mean that the reaction that damages...
  7. (This is a reply to everyone, but comes from what celiachap wrote...) Another message board I frequent has had, from time to time, spats of fakers. Sometimes they're initially good, but get caught much later in a slip. Sometimes they're seemingly obvious to begin with. Sometimes, you think they're obvious, but later information makes you think they might...
  8. They don't have to understand, they only have to do. Until they do comply, they don't get the chance to mess him up with gluten.
  9. Open Original Shared Link Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that occurs in genetically predisposed individuals as the result of an immune response to gluten. This immune response occurs in both the lamina propria and the epithelium of the small intestine. There is a close link to HLA DQ2 and DQ8, although these HLA genes account for only 40% of the...
  10. I have seen rice bran, but not rice germ yet.
  11. Last time I checked (which was a few months ago) the cinnamon altoids gum flavor didn't have wheat in it, while the peppermint did. I totally don't get it, but that's what the labels told me.
  12. if it were gene therapy, such that I genetically didn't have the problem any more, then I would probably do it, but still not make dramatic changes to my diet. if it were something more like a lactase pill, if it were expected to be highly effective, I'd take it for restaurant situations, but still try to get gluten free dishes.
  13. homemade, from scratch! (seriously, it's not that hard, and I encourage everyone to try it once to see for themselves the difference. but, of course, there are a number of other options if you don't want to take the time.)
  14. wacky on the wheat flour. I understood oat was preferred due to taste reasons, but someone's gotta be different, right? ;-) that doesn't really surprise me about the fig pieces (that water content thing and all), though it's unfortunate...
  15. nice. congrats on the success, and thanks for letting us know!
  16. That experience - vaginismus - is also a common cause. The doctor should both talk to you, and touch you (like, put a hand on your leg) first. Additionally, you can voluntarily relax the muscles (with varying levels of success, depending on how much you practice this and the full extent of the cause of the vaginismus) to reduce this problem. If it significantly...
  17. I used to use KY. Neither my husband and I were a big fan of it. I much prefer 'Elbow Grease'. Silly name, but good stuff. Astroglide is another popular brand. The best advice I have is to get samples of a number of kinds and find which you like best.
  18. I get that all the time, but I have vular vestibulitis, so it's kinda expected. If the skin in the area is a bit dry, or it was just after your period (when you're at your lowest level of estrogen, which may also mean that the skin is a bit thinner), it may not have been as stretchy as it needed to be for how 'aggressive' the gyn was. Do mention it to your...
  19. I would have called it a grocery store, but a high-end, heath food oriented one. It's certainly a store that blurs the line between the two categories. ;-)
  20. Open Original Shared Link Robert's American Gourmet issues allergy alert on undeclared wheat in wheat-free chaos snack mix Contact: Robert's American Gourmet (516) 656-4545 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Sea Cliff, NY -- January 13, 2006 -- Robert's American Gourmet of Sea Cliff, NY is recalling 153 cases (12 packages per case) of Robert's American Gourmet...
  21. date pieces, fairly uniquely, are almost universally dusted in oat flour (so it won't be reported, even under the new law), because of the high moisture content of dates. many other dried fruits - even chopped - have a much lower water content and do not have a flour coating. (of course, if unsure, call to find out.)
  22. MSFL, I don't know if it's a language/grammar thing (and I'm not bringing nationality/ethnicity into this - plenty of native english speakers use different language/grammar online than in speaking) or just me misunderstanding, so I'm trying to clear up a couple other things related to the symptoms. You've talked about eating bananas, citrus fruits,...
  23. and be aware of checking for specific forms of food - which may just be a red herring in the food intolerance hunt. what I mean is the following: some corn chips (plain tortilla chips, no flavors) give me some annoying symptoms (not gluten-like) and I don't seem to digest whole corn kernels much at all, but corn in a plain tortilla (just corn flour and water...
  24. Rainbow Light makes a number of allergen free vitamins (including multis), that I've always done well with. Meal replacements, however, aren't going to give you the range of phytonutrients and macronutrients that real foods will.
  25. The yeast infections that occur in the body are not caused by the same yeast that is used in baking (or brewing). It's a different organism entirely. The most common theory of dietary conditions exacerbating yeast is that of getting too much sugar (or simple carbs that are readily converted to sugar), which puts too much glucose in the blood stream, which...
