Don't let yourself be guilt-tripped by the ignorant any longer. Nor physically harmed by them! While even I (who often profess to having fabulous family who may not have heard much of this, but accept it even when it's a pain) felt a bit bad about always checking on the double dipping situation and so forth during Thanksgiving (I did the cooking, I was...

ARCHIVED Symptoms Of Celiac?
tarnalberry replied to baldridgem's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Can be, but there are a lot of other things that need to be tested for as well. I presume she's had a number of blood tests run as well? -
It varies by the individual. If you don't have an anaphylactic allergy, then you might be able to "cheat" a bit, but it depends on your symptoms. This is definitely an area to have your doctor (preferrably an allergist) guide you in.

I'd definitely quibble with this paragraph. The incidence of first testing says nothing about the incidence of first occurance. It took an awfully long time before gravity was tested for, but it was rather important in the forming of the planet long before a human was around to test it. It took an awfully long time before infectious diseases (particularly...

ARCHIVED Help! What's Wrong With Me?
tarnalberry replied to cynicaltomorrow's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Those are hypoglycemic symptoms, though you can't rule out other things. It doesn't mean you're going to be dx'ed with hypoglycemia off a test, but you may still need to treat it as such, and you definitely need to talk to your doctor about getting tested. The worst thing for you to do is treat the odd feelings with a rush of sugar. It is only going to... -
ARCHIVED Southbeach Diet
tarnalberry replied to csnively's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
No, there are varying amounts of fat, fiber, and protein in different grains, and hence in different flours. Check the label on the flour packages for each particular grain's information. -
Let's say you're stuffing a bird. You grab a handful of stuffing with one hand, and hold onto the turkey with the other, and shove it in. As the bird gets full, you may use both hands to get the stuffing inside the turkey. Then you hold the turkey again on another handful. Bingo - stuffing on the turkey, where you might eat it.

While it could be, I would still check with your doctor for other causes of nerve damage. Diabetes can go hand in hand with celiac, and it is a more common cause of peripheral nerve damamge.

We know that it's partly environmental - though not necessarily exactly what it is in our environment that does the triggering. I'm a Heinz 57 of Northern European decent - primarily French and Hungarian, but also some Irish, English, Welsh, German, and some other stuff I don't remember... No one else in my family has tested for it, and none are obvious...

ARCHIVED Really Good Pizza : )
tarnalberry replied to leapingllama05's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I think, in the same way that, cereals are a personal taste thing, pizza crusts are too. I really enjoy Nature's Highlights rice pizza crust, but I know not everyone does. It's annoying, sometimes, that it takes a couple of hit-and-miss tries, to find something good. -
ARCHIVED How To Handle This . . .
tarnalberry replied to LynnR's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's such a personal situation, that there's hardly one answer that will be best for you other than the one you'd come up with yourself. I've gone to weddings since being gluten-free and not had much of anything (other than some grapes and strawberries off the fruit trays ;-) ). And I've brought my own food. And, for the most part, sat there enjoying the... -
Yep, I made the whole meal gluten-free/CF/VLF (that last one is VLF), and while it was tricky and my husband still can't stand the aftertaste of gluten-free flours (hence he didn't like the pie), it was considered tasty by everyone. I only wish I could eat all the pie at once without blowing my diet! ;-)

ARCHIVED Replacement For Cheerios
tarnalberry replied to celiac3270's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I used to enjoy cherrios, particularly the triple berry cherrios, but now - when my husband eats them - I think they smell like cat food. -
ARCHIVED Replacement For Cheerios
tarnalberry replied to celiac3270's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yep, the Nu-World ones are the ones I got. Meh... The texture's not the same (or close) and the taste is mediocre. But that's according to my tastebuds. I recally their shipping not being too bad, and I picked up a couple other things to try (some snack type foods) that were better than the cereal - though I still don't plan to place another order. I... -
ARCHIVED What About Cd Causes Infertility?
tarnalberry replied to OhNoes's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
"Infertility" includes early miscarriages - which actually occurs in about 30% of all pregnancies, the thing is that most women don't know they're pregnant when they happen because they are SO early. So the two aren't necessarily separate issues. I know a non-trivial portion of the problem is the fact that you're not absorbing the nutrients a fetus needs... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Cereals?
tarnalberry replied to dmchr4's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Mariann, you might consider getting some freeze dried fruits (Just Veggies makes them, among other things - like camping stores) and add them to the more bland cereals. It's still sugar, but at least a bit healthier than straight up sugar. -
ARCHIVED Replacement For Cheerios
tarnalberry replied to celiac3270's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This topic comes up ALL the time on the Gluten-free Casein-free yahoo groups (mostly parents of autistic kids), and the consensus there has been "outta luck". There's an amaranth cereal that's an O shape that's not very Cherrio like that I don't think is awful (but don't like) but most people think they're awful. Though I, too, will be interested if there... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Cereals?
tarnalberry replied to dmchr4's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I like BRM's Mighty Tasty Hot Cereal IFF I make it with soy milk, honey, and cinnamon (and vanilla). Otherwise, very bland. -
ARCHIVED Last Minute Pie Crust
tarnalberry replied to lilliexx's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Lol :-) I'm glad you liked it. Procrastination truely is the mother of invention. ;-) -
ARCHIVED Backtracking! Frustrated!
tarnalberry replied to dbuhl79's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'd like to note, for the naysayers, that what you did - trying the diet, then challenging with the potential offending item again - is a valid diagnostic test (one of many) that allergists do use for difficult to pinpoint food allergies. They tend to do it in the office and are looking for quicker reacting IgE allergies, but that was the third step in the... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Cereals?
tarnalberry replied to dmchr4's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Health Valley's Corn Crunch-Em's and Rice Crunch-Em's are very similar to Chex. Someone makes a Nutty Rice that's very good (but the Nutty Corn, as I recall, is not gluten-free). I also like Kashi's Cranberry Sunrise. Erewon makes a couple rice-crispie like cereals, one with freeze-dried berries that I rather like. Nature's Path makes a Mesa Sunrise that... -
ARCHIVED Whole Foods
tarnalberry replied to jaimek's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Whole Foods has stated that they will not be delivering their gluten-free bakery items to the West Coast, as the bakery is intended for East Coast distribution. According to the folks in charge of putting together the bakery, though, they are working on a plan to open one up on the West Coast, they simply don't have any sort of time table for that yet. ... -
ARCHIVED Hunts Tomato Sauce
tarnalberry replied to Twister2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Which variety? What are the ingredients? -
Anything you don't prepare yourself from scratch from known-to-be gluten-free items runs the risk of getting you sick. That's not to say that's your ONLY choice, but remember it's a choice. There's a risk associate with choosing items someone else has control over, but life is a set of calculated risks anyway. Try not to be angry at yourself; we can't...

ARCHIVED Could It Still Be Celiac
tarnalberry replied to esmee's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
While the chances are lower with the negative blood tests, they're still not zero. And only taking two biopsies ... well... that test isn't going to tell you much other than you don't have a raging case of celiac that's destroyed your entire collection of intestinal villi. The symptoms certainly could be consistent with celiac, but I'm sure there...
