ARCHIVED gluten-free Dog Treats?
tarnalberry replied to hsd1203's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
BTW, Blue Buffalo (dry dog food) is NOT gluten free. Not the gluten free we think of. It has oats and barley grass or barley grain. Some of their canned food is gluten free. The dog food world considers the gluten by-product of grains and wheat to be gluten. So, "Gluten Free" for dog foods does NOT mean what it does for human food. It pretty much... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Dog Treats?
tarnalberry replied to hsd1203's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There are oodles of gluten free treats and foods. And puppies, btw, do not need puppy food - it's usually high enough in calories that it causes them to grow faster than they ought to, which can cause orthopaedic and metabolic issues. Gluten free dog foods (well, grain free - there are more that have grain, but no gluten, so things like rice and corn... -
ARCHIVED Finger Food Ideas
tarnalberry replied to Evie4's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I made summer rolls today (like spring rolls, but with rice paper and not cooked). Tasty finger food. YUM! -
ARCHIVED Amy's Makes Me Sad...
tarnalberry replied to G-freegal12's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My husband has cinnamon rolls and Fruit Loops in our kitchen. By the logic presented here so far, I'd never be able to call anything I cooked in my kitchen gluten free because it's a shared facility. And... well... I'd have to disagree with you on that one. -
ARCHIVED Test Results In -- Celiac Or Something Else?
tarnalberry replied to msharnoubi's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The dietary response IS a valid test (and many doctors will accept it as such, but this practice varies widely). If the diet makes you feel better, I say go gluten free. If it doesn't (and by that, I mean if three months gluten free makes no difference), then you might have "IBS". BUT, as far as I can figure out, IBS is still caused by the immune system... -
ARCHIVED Just Starting The Process
tarnalberry replied to Robinchk's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Even if you don't get the formal diagnosis (and not only are blood tests subject to false negatives, but there are different "standards" for what positive/negative mean), would you go back to eating gluten? You don't need the special goodies to stay healthy and gluten free (and stuffed full of really tasty food ). -
ARCHIVED How Long To Be On Gluten Before The Tests?
tarnalberry replied to trixiesirisheyes's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Three slices of bread (or the equivalent) every day for three months. Do you *need* a medical diagnosis? -
ARCHIVED Need Menu Ideas
tarnalberry replied to NewGFMom's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
If your DH hasn't had beans in soup, he might consider eating a bean soup, or a lentil soup. (My husband won't eat beans any way, except in bean soup.) Lots and lots and lots of veggie dishes are gluten free - sautee them, bake 'em, broil 'em... I do beets and field greens, roasted potatoes, and sauteed green beans for Thanksgiving. (Everything but the... -
ARCHIVED Could I Return To Having Wheat After Having A Baby?
tarnalberry replied to Liveenjoylife's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Nope, because it's not caused by hormones. Once your celiac genes have been triggered, no one knows of any way for them to be "turned off". -
ARCHIVED Cast Iron Skillet
tarnalberry replied to kookie's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Gluten breaks down at a temperature somewhat over 600F. (Denatures the protein - it's a strong little bugger.) I forget the exact temperature. I presume that self-cleaning cycles get hotter than that (I've never used one), but you might double check. (And if it's over, feel fairly confident about the process.) Good luck! -
ARCHIVED Movie Popcorn?
tarnalberry replied to CGally81's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Heh, that's true. Movie popcorn NEVER sat well with my stomach. The chemicals they use for popping, outside of any "butter flavored topping" just... URGH! -
ARCHIVED Starving In The Airport
tarnalberry replied to NorthernElf's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Yeah, SEATAC isn't the best place to find food. If I'm traveling, I ALWAYS pack plenty of food. (Think at least 1000 calories worth.) Even in airports, as long as it's not liquid, it's fine. -
ARCHIVED Amy's Makes Me Sad...
tarnalberry replied to G-freegal12's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yup - they're not lying; they do not add any gluten ingredients to their "gluten free" items. But if you are sensitive enough that you react for cross contamination, you have to read packages for the "made in a shared facility" or "made on shared equipment" statements. And remember, unless you never allow anyone to bring anything containing gluten in... -
ARCHIVED Just Starting The Process
tarnalberry replied to Robinchk's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Doctors like objective evidence. Your experiences, though COMPLETELY VALID, are not *objective* evidence. (They are subjective, and often seen as "not as valuable" for doctors, because they can't quantify it and have clear yes/no answers from it.) If you know that going gluten free helps you, once your testing is done, go - and stay - gluten free. If... -
ARCHIVED Cast Iron Skillet
tarnalberry replied to kookie's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I wouldn't, and didn't. My old cast iron pan didn't have the sentimental value that yours did, but I would still not risk getting contaminated. -
ARCHIVED When People Want To Host A Bridal Shower For You....
tarnalberry replied to latteda's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What I would say (and will say next April when this comes up for me): "Make the food for everyone else. I will bring my own, no worries." Now is NOT a time to "take a chance for a friend". Now is when you stay healthy for your baby. To me, this isn't negotiable, nor do I care whether or not anyone considers it "reasonable". It's what you do to feel that... -
Whoohoo! Congrats on the first step. If he's not opposed to hugs (and other forms of physical affection), I'd vote for replacing ever temptation for a kiss (right now, until you're back on to that) with a hug or something along those lines. As for toothpastes, I know that anything by Crest or Colgate is gluten free. Tom's of Maine is too. Sensodyne...

Oh, I don't mean you should be asking him to nurture you. He should just respect you. Ignoring your health needs and putting his convenience over your physical health is showing distinct DISRESPECT, regardless of "nurturing". (Yeah, I feel kind of strongly on the issue of basic respect for other people's decisions. )

ARCHIVED Need Help Looking At Blood Test Results
tarnalberry replied to carecare's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It's a very incomplete test for celiac. It indicates she may well have it - she's producing antibodies against gliadin (wheat protein). WBC is white blood count, and is lowered in instances of stress to the immune system. It's not abnormal at all for adolescents to have a "honeymoon" period during the teenage and/or early 20's, where they don't experience... -
I say call him out on this. Literally, "If you care about me, you should care about my health. If you care about my health, you should care about me staying healthy and not harming my health. So why the refusal to learn how I can best stay healthy?" And don't take p%$#@#foot "I don't have time" answers - that means "I don't have time to prioritize you...

ARCHIVED Good Protein Sources?
tarnalberry replied to CGally81's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Fat in popcorn? You're either adding butter (not the worst source of fat, certainly!), or using microwave popcorn, which doesn't have good fat, and doesn't have huge quantities of it. And if you're eating peanut butter at every meal... whew, that's a lot of peanut butter. Two foods aren't enough to provide you with the fat you may need. Let's say you... -
ARCHIVED Good Protein Sources?
tarnalberry replied to CGally81's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm still not seeing you talk about how much fat you're eating. It's not just getting protein. Or making sure to have carbs. Or even JUST fat. But it's a combination of the three, and if you're system is sensitive to it, leaving one out makes a huge difference. You could eat a meal of chicken, rice, applesauce, and carrots, and because none of those... -
ARCHIVED Glutening And Calling In Sick
tarnalberry replied to DesertGirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Honestly, having been in a similar situation, now you start looking for another job. Right or wrong, she's decided you're an unreliable employee, and there is often little you can do about it. The stress of her nitpicking you and watching over your shoulder will take it's toll on you. Until then, yeah, sometimes you'll have to drag yourself in when you... -
ARCHIVED Good Protein Sources?
tarnalberry replied to CGally81's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
keep in mind that your body can't handle a whole lot of protein at once - about 20-30g per meal is all it's going to really absorb. are you getting enough fat and COMPLEX carbs (and fiber) in each meal? a chicken breast may be high in protein, but it won't fill you up as well as half a chicken breast and half a sweet potato with olive oil on it. -
ARCHIVED Help For The World's Pickiest Eater
tarnalberry replied to Dakko's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'd encourage you get grab a few cookbooks for the new year, and let them inspire you. The recipes don't have to be gluten free if you feel fairly comfortable about modifying, nor do they have to be quite right in terms of other restrictions - you just need something to inspire you to other dishes. What you describe sounds a lot like my food preferences...
