  1. The autoimmune reaction is self-sustaining in the gut for up to two weeks. So yes, at least a week of noticing symptoms is totally possible - and for a lot of us, completely normal. (I take a week to feel better myself, and I'm not all that symptomatic.)
  2. There are mood altering chemicals (in small, but nontrivial, amounts) in chocolate. It may really just be you're craving chocolate because you haven't had chocolate. If you get a GOOD dark chocolate, a very small amount (like a quarter of a serving), eaten slowly (I never knew people chewed their chocolate - really - let it melt in your mouth instead) can...
  3. My theory is this - there is no way to know if you are "just" gluten intolerant, or simply not damaged enough to test positive for celiac disease. ANY test they run for you has subjective tolerances, and it is entirely possible that there is a missed diagnosis. (Even with a gene test - not all the genes that cause celiac have been identified.) Beyond...
  4. there is no uploaded storage space available for pictures on this site. you need to host them somewhere else (not your own hard drive, as it needs to be a web address), and then use the method given.
  5. I'm not sure what filling you mean? There should only be a thin layer of melted butter/sugar/cinnamon (and nuts if you use them) between the layers of dough. Frosting goes on after they've come out of the oven. What is it that's "falling out"?
  6. Lol - cooking in cast iron pans transfers some of the iron to your food. Cooking acidic foods (like tomatoes) is particularly effective at this.
  7. On average - for everyone: * 25% in the first month * 60% in six months * 75% in nine months * 80% in twelve months * 90% in eighteen months Open Original Shared Link I think charting helped by my friend and I conceive as quickly as we both did.
  8. "may contain..." is a standard CYA warning for mixed facilities. It does NOT mean that there is gluten in there. That said, PAM has one cooking spray, one that is dedicated to baking, introduced a year or two ago, that specifically has wheat in it, as an ingredient. (The rest don't.) Crazy! I happen to use Spectrum Organic's Canola spray.
  9. That is not a patent for "the swine flu" vaccine. It is a patent for a flu vaccine that works against a number of different types of flus. H1N1 was a possible type of flu long before we knew of the "swine flu". That's proof of nothing more than trying to get a more generic flu vaccine produced. Something that's been being worked on for *DECADES...
  10. Yup - iron can be hard on the stomach. You might try a different maker (sometimes it makes a difference) or smaller doses.
  11. Well, I would first ask where you are from? There are going to be locations where... yeah, there is a little bit of a fad thing going on. Rest assured that those of us who *do* have real gluten issues going on are equally annoyed about it. Second, there are a whole host of reasons you'll hear it: It's a medical diagnosis, and they just don't tell...
  12. Are you getting enough to eat? (Probably in the 1500-2000calorie range, but depends on your weight/body type.) And Are you getting enough exercise? I was never able to healthfully lose weight without steady exercise - it makes it slower, but more consistent and "easier" to maintain. (So, I'm not counting the 5lb loss during a really bad flu type of...
  13. I still trust it, and blame lawyers and those who like lawsuits for the legal necessity for them to cover their arses.
  14. Are you consuming milk? Lactose intolerance is quite common, and can cause severe gas.
  15. You can use this link to find the most active members. The site has well over 30,000 members, but only about 400 have more than 200 posts.
  16. I like the Rainbow Light Prenatals I've been taking - they sit well with me. There's a thread somewhere that discusses a number of other prenatals that other folks around here have taken, which I'm sure you can find on the search. Good luck! Try not to stress yourself out about it - expect it to take a little while to get pregnant, so that you can be...
  17. Welcome to the wonderful world of "no definitive answers". Seriously, in pregnancy, outside of the "no, don't do that", there is next to no "normal". It's mildly frustrating, sometimes. I'll go through your questions, but realize that the answer for most of them is "it depends on you". 1.) How long did it take you to get pregnant after you started...
  18. The changing levels of hormones affect the motility of the intestines (to a small degree) and any cramping that the uterus does can have a physical effect on the operation of the intestines (it's a large muscle pulling on tissue that's also attached (indirectly) to the intestines. On it's own, menstruation can cause abdominal/intestinal pain and other intestinal...
  19. You said you'd been eating gluten free at the time of the tests. For how long? If there wasn't much damage to your intestines, it wouldn't take very long before the tests are completely useless. You must be eating gluten for the tests to be accurate.
  20. Starbucks will use soy milk if you ask. You'd also want to ask for a clean steamer canister, since they'll often only rinse them, but many of us haven't had a problem with their gluten free stuff (and most of their stuff is gluten free).
  21. has she had her vitamin levels checked? particularly iron, b-vit levels, but also thyroid.
  22. Since much of our folic acid comes from added supplementation to breads, prepared cereals, and pasta, there are studies that show some celiacs who strictly follow the gluten-free diet can be deficient in folic acid (and sometimes iron). Of course, a well rounded, healthy diet can fix that. (Folic acid is found in large quantities in leafy green vegetables...
  23. This. I don't trust someone to know that soy sauce has gluten in it. That Swanson's Organic Chicken Broth has wheat in it. That shared wooden spoons or pasta colanders will contaminate food. Bring your own dish to share, and bring your own food for yourself.
  24. It's just *SO* individual. When my inlaws are here, there isn't really much that's shared - they don't use condiments on their sandwhiches, no one else uses their tub of oatmeal, and no one else uses the jug of milk for my FIL's cereal. All of their stuff is on the dedicated cutting board or cabinet. Anything we eat together is gluten free. I don't particularly...
  25. Make sure that you're on a prenatal, first. Also make sure that you're getting at least 1200mg calcium a day (you'll want about 1500mg/day when you *are* pregnant). (Get half that in magnesium as well.) And get your iron tested. Many women find that supplemental iron during pregnancy is a good idea, BUT you can have iron levels too high. It's not common...
