  1. An analogy that may be easier for him to understand - rheumatoid arthritis is also genetically linked. but (outside of juvenile RA) it usually doesn't manifest until the mid-20's. a good portion of breast cancer is genetically linked. but a woman doesn't develop breast cancer in infancy - it's later in life. the same is true for high blood pressure...
  2. Outside of removing gluten and dairy, how has your diet changed? Are you now consuming soy milk where you weren't before? Are you now eating significantly more corn or rice than you were before? Are you getting less fiber because you used to get fiber primarily through whole wheat/oats/etc.? Are you eating more of any particular foods? You may have...
  3. I didn't see the value for IgA gliadin antibody listed in your post. The total IgA being positive means that she isn't IgA deficient, so the IgA tests are useful. Her IgG anti-gliadin antibody is positive. That's one marker for celiac reaction. Her genetic testing shows that she has both of the genes that lead to the majority of celiac disease. This...
  4. Definitely talk to your pediatrician. Since it is a live (weakened) virus, you can figure some categories of people who shouldn't get it, but the "edge" cases really need to be determined on a case by case basis. It is, by the way, possible (though I don't yet have any idea how hard) to get single dose vaccines, rather than the multi-dose vaccination...
  5. from about week 4 to week 8, I was pretty much constantly nauseated. not "oh god, I'm going to throw up right now", but "ugh, I don't want to move, the idea of food is revolting". losing weight in your first trimester, while not advisable, is NOT a crisis. it's fairly common, specifically due to the food thing. unfortunately, loading up on carbs isn...
  6. I should have clarified - I absolutely think the doctor's advice is horrid. Absolutely dumb advice to be giving a patient. But I think it's fair to try to understand why they might say something dumber than you'd ever expect, in order to try to work past that with your doctor. It's not just useful for "treatment" of celiac, but for most other things that...
  7. I don't have a lot of patience for that sort of stuff. I'd probably say something along the lines of "wow, are you really that self centered that you think MY feeling like sh$! revolves around you? really?" I would then probably point out all the times I did participate in the "usual activities", and add "if I really wanted to pretend I was sick just to...
  8. don't discount the fact that doctors will often try to find the "best" approach for their patient. not the healthiest, but the best when all things are considered. if they (rightly, based on the research that's been done on the "general celiac population") assume that you're going to find a 100% of the time gluten free diet too hard to stick to, then they...
  9. did you previously exercise more? have a job or hobby that kept you moving more? honestly, it sounds pretty normal, especially depending on how you sleep. not getting regular exercise makes me far stiffer, and I'm always stiffer in the morning (makes teaching those 6:45am yoga classes more interesting ). do you feel better if you move around a bit?...
  10. IIRC, the attenuated live vaccine that's delivered via nasal spray (effectiveness varies depending on age, however) is NOT cultured in eggs, and is suitable for those even with anaphylactic egg allergies. Of course, your doctor should have the details on the difference between the two types of vaccine and whether or not either would be acceptable for this...
  11. As I am pregnant AND have asthma, I will probably be getting both flu vaccines. It has nothing to do with celiac for me.
  12. you can always go somewhere that doesn't cook for you. the last time my husband and I went to hawaii, we stayed at B&B's that had kitchens we could use. while I was alright with sticking to stainless steel pans there, you could, if needed, bring a minimal supply of your own cookware.
  13. three slices of bread a day for about three months. I've heard some folks say 6-8 weeks, but you're hoping damage occurs quickly in that case, and it's impossible to know for sure, regardless of symptoms, what is happening to the intestinal villi.
  14. your original post, before it was edited, said "my GI ... believes that celiacs should not be required...". So, in the wording as you originally had it, most definitely could imply the average celiac. that's why I asked. thank you for the clarification.
  15. the "tissue" could also be mucus, which might be hard to differentiate in the bowl, as it were. (but I don't disagree that getting checked with a familial background is a good idea. )
  16. ENF, that's true of your particular case. And I don't dispute the fact that there can be additional issues. I absolutely do not argue your personal circumstances. Your response hasn't stated why, as a matter of course, an average treated celiac is so much more disabled than an average person (who also may have their own special reasons for exception...
  17. On what basis? I'm not trying to argue, I simply don't understand. Just like going to work - you bring your own food, you don't eat gluten, and you're fine. Assuming that you've had time to recover since diagnosis and there are not *other* complicating factors (like, significant neuropathy from the celiac that impares every day function), what could possibly...
  18. Assumptions: 1) you have to have been diagnosed as a celiac to claim celiac as a reason to avoid jury duty. But if this is the case, you should be on a gluten free diet, and hence the celiac itself is no longer 'active', and not a reason to avoid jury duty. (exception for recent - within ~3-6month - diagnosis, of course). 2) previously undiagnosed...
  19. I do not know if this could be a deficiency (I say that because the tingling is so very targeted), but I certainly won't say no. Given what you say, however, from the outside of the foot to the ankle to the back of the knee - that is the path of the nerve bundle that runs out of S1 (the first vertebra of the sacrum, at the top). Have you had any back pain...
  20. lots of gluten-free thai options. if there's a "let's go out to dinner. oh, where can we go that you can eat?" sort of thing, I'll generally suggest thai. (or sushi, at least when I could still eat raw fish. ) curries are often gluten (and dairy) free. phad thai is usually gluten free. there are a few other things too (the ones with rice noodles, but...
  21. according to a phone call to them last christmas (my inlaws use eggbeaters, including the flavored varieties), they are all gluten free. some stores, like WholeFoods, however, carry "JustWhites", which, as the name implies, is JUST egg whites. no gums, no flavors, no fillers. I prefer the stuff if I'm not able to use whole eggs.
  22. You can definitely "think yourself" into a migraine. (I have chronic migraines, and have experienced this. It's annoying, because just because you can 'think' yourself into one, doesn't mean you can 'think' yourself out of one. And it's kind of misleading to phrase it as "thinking" into a migraine, because it has more to do with the idea that you might...
  23. I see you live in Bellevue, and I'm trying to send you a msg, but it isn't allowing me to do so. Would love to connect and find out if you know of a support group on the Eastside. Recently diagnosed and sad.

  24. Unfortunately, there is not money, time, and interest to test everything. So, while thousands of years of anecdotal evidence may show that something works (yoga on depression and back pain, for instance (1)), it hasn't been studied. And when there is finally some small amount of money to study something "alternative", it is often (certainly not always)...
  25. yes, totally possible to be "slightly anemic". in face, it's possible to be anemic, based on what YOUR system needs, but not test as one, based on averaged reference ranges for the general population. that has definitely been the case for me.
