ARCHIVED Cpap--sleep Apnea Machine
debbiewil replied to Judyin Philly's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Judy, There are several different surgical proceedures, which can help in some cases. It very much depends on how your face, throat, etc. is shaped and what the actual cause of the blockage is. They can range from a very simple proceedure called "pillar" done right in the doctor's office to actually reconstructing the whole jaw. Some have had great success... -

ARCHIVED Cpap--sleep Apnea Machine
debbiewil replied to Judyin Philly's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Judy, I went for the Remstar auto w/c-flex - figured if I was going to do it, I might as well go top of the line. Open Original Shared Link plus the software - Open Original Shared Link There are others out there - 2 of my friends have the Goodknight 420E and love it. There are, as always, pluses and minuses with each different machine. If you ever... -
ARCHIVED Cpap--sleep Apnea Machine
debbiewil replied to Judyin Philly's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Judy, Any change in weight could mean a change in pressure is needed. I broke down and bought myself an autopap last January, with the software for my computer. So I can download the info every few weeks and check that I'm doing ok. Any major changes in the leaks or numbers and I can change the machine or readjust my mask, etc. I just use one size of... -
ARCHIVED Negative Blood Test, gluten-free Diet Improves Symptoms
debbiewil replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, Just a note on the diet, we DO have the right to choose what we eat. If you chose not to eat pork or shellfish for religious reasons, no one would question it. If you chose to eat vegetarian or vegan, it would be accepted. I don't know anyone who doesn't choose not to eat certain things, just because they don't like the taste. (My mother never could... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Personal Care Products For Toddlers?
debbiewil replied to elfkin's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I like the gluten-free Savonnerie line - shampoo, conditioner, soap and skin creme. It's fragrence free as well as gluten-free, which I think is a plus. I have problems with the perfumes in skin care items at times. Open Original Shared Link Debbie -
ARCHIVED Cpap--sleep Apnea Machine
debbiewil replied to Judyin Philly's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Judy, Yes, I have apnea and celiac. I also use the Mirage Swift pillows, mostly because they come with the three different size pillows and can be worn with glasses. The headbands do stretch a bit after a while, and need to be readjusted on a regular basis. For me, I like to keep the band in the back as tight as possible, and the one that goes over the... -
Yes, overweight all my life. Never could lose much, no matter how hard I tried and how well I ate - and I usually ate well. I've always LIKED to cook, and am not crazy about fast food. Also don't have much of a sweet tooth, so rarely ate deserts. Only been gluten-free for a few months now, but am down 2 sizes in clothes, and haven't even tried to lose weight...

Rachel, Thanks SO MUCH for the link. I'll check it out and see if I can find something similar locally. And I'm so glad you found someone to help you. I understand completely about not getting your hopes up - that's how I felt when starting the gluten-free diet. And even though it's only been a few months, I've already seen enough improvement to know that...

Rachel, this doctor sounds great. Please keep us informed on the tests he runs and the results. And for those of us who don't live anyplace near and can go to him, ask him if he knows or can recommend anyone in other states, or even if he'll suggest a list of the tests to be run that we can take to our doctors. Unfortunately, there isn't any one thing that causes or prevents anything - all the different systems in the body are connected, and many different factors can influence your lipid levels. Your genetic makeup - some people just naturally have higher lipid levels than others; your diet - the amount of red meat, fish, types and kinds of oils, etc. can all influence...

Well, let's see. Started having major medical problems between 3-4 months of age (just about the time cereals got introduced, duh!) Spent most of the rest of my infancy, early childhood, in and out of hospitals - got sent to several major "big name" medical centers when the local hospital couldn't figure me out. Did lots of tests, including some neurological...

There are a few out there for kids. "Eating Gluten-Free with Emily" has gotten some good review. Danna Korn has one on Celiac Kids as well as the Wheat Free-Worry Free book. Amazon's site for the Emily book has some others listed below as well. Open Original Shared Link Debbie

One study showed that .1g of gluten raised antibodies. So, that small of an amount has been proven to do damage. Damage hasn't been measured at lower amounts, but who knows if our bodies are still having a slight reaction, just not enough to measure. From what I understand, .1g is just about the amount in one of the low gluten hosts. So, I wouldn't even trust...

ARCHIVED Biopsy
debbiewil replied to averyevansmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
For snacks, you can use some regular ones that they might already be used to. Lays Stax chips are gluten free (not the regular Lays - some of the regular ones may be cross contaminated, and some of the regual flavored chips may contain gluten). Some of the corn chips and rice cakes are gluten free. My little neice loves to dip food. We get gluten-free ranch... -
No personal advice, but a friend who was diagnosed celiac in between child one and two found that she didn't put anything like the same weight on in the early part of the pregnancy when eating gluten-free, but did put more on in the later part, so ended up almost the same over all. But she said she felt much better, and lost the extra much faster with the...

ARCHIVED Disagree With Doctors
debbiewil replied to lovemyboy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
One more thing you might consider - Lactose intolerance is often the first sign of celiac disease. Since lactase, the enzyme needed to digest lactose, is in the top part of the villi, as soon as the villi start getting damaged, the body loses its lactase and can't digest lactose. You might find that after a few months gluten free, the villi will heal and... -
ARCHIVED New Year's Party
debbiewil replied to Mahee34's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
One thing I made for a holiday party was a cheese and noodle dish that went over VERY well. I used rice lasagna noodles, and a mixture of mozzerella, munster and a bit of romano cheeses. Also mixed sugar, cinnamon, and a tiny bit of cloves and mace. I think almost any cheese mixture would do - I used what I had in the fridge. Did several layers of the... -
Regular coffee should be fine. Some of the flavored cofees might contain gluten, so if you want something fancy you'll have to read the ingredients. I drink cofee all the time, but mostly stick with the regular. If I want something fancy, I'll get a specialty type, like Kona, or an espresso, or I'll make it myself. I've gotten really good at making mochas...

ARCHIVED Was I Glutened And/or Dairy'ed?
debbiewil replied to jnclelland's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Most soymilk is gluten free, but I think there may be some with gluten. Perhaps you could call and find out what brand of soymilk they use, and check to see if it is gluten free. Debbie -
ARCHIVED Is Anyone Else Tired Of Being Freezing?
debbiewil replied to jessika393's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
oh, yeah, me too. And my house doesn't have air conditioning, and all my friends think I'm crazy and wonder how I stand it in the middle of summer - that's the only time I'm comfortable. Debbie -
ARCHIVED Muscle Soreness
debbiewil replied to julie5914's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes, many times. I was grocery shopping the other night and didn't think I'd make it out of the store. About halfway through, my muscles were so tired, I was holding on to the shelves for support, just to take a break. I only had about 5 things to get, but they were all over the store and I really didn't think I'd be able to make it. I know I'm low on some... -
sspitzer5, Could have been the chips. Last time I ate there I ordered the quacomole and chips, and the chips they served were FLOUR tortilla chips, fried up, not corn chips. I just gave them to one of my friends, and stuck to the bol. So there could have been some flour chips, or maybe they fried them up with flour chips, and that's what you got. Debbie

ARCHIVED Anyone Have Any Vacation Recommendations?
debbiewil replied to buluga's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Open Original Shared Link will let you search for inns and B&B's that will prepare gluten free meals. It's one of the search options you can put in. I looked for my state (MD) and only found 2, but there are some out there. Debbie
