  1. My experience was that things do get progressively worse over time. I can look back at my 20's, 30's and 40's and see progressively worse symptoms that characterized each decade. That would seem to make sense. Symptoms other than the basic ones (gas, bloating and D) result from either poor or malnutrition and take time to develop. As a celiac goes from...
  2. I see no reason to mention it. There used to be a gluten-free bakery in Phila called Mr. Ritt's, which made incredible high end baked goods. They came to a local support meeting one time. During the meeting, they mentioned that they had contracts with some of the local Phila hotels. They supplied breads, rolls, cakes, cookies, etc. which were gluten...
  3. Just returned from a week aboard the Sun Dancer II in Belize. Had no problems staying gluten-free. Carlos, the cook, did a wonderful job and served up great, tasty meals. As a result, I was able to relax and enjoy a week of diving. This is my third time on this particular boat (once before in Belize and once before in Palau). I highly recommend it and...
  4. Does anyone have current experience staying (and eating) at any of the eco-resorts in Belize or at the Little Cayman Beach Resort in the Caymans? There was a post in April about the Belize Jungle Dome but that was the only current info my search turned up. I'm hoping to find a resort that is celiac-experienced. During my stay in Belize I'll be interested...
  5. I worked 12-8 for about 2 yrs. I adjusted to it but the adjustment had a very ragged edge. There were problems that continually popped up. My friends never figured out my sleep schedule (or at least never respected it). They would drop by to visit late at night thinking that they could catch me before I went to work and before they went home to sleep...
  6. If you're looking at South America, then consider Uruguay. It is a hidden gem. The people are very friendly and treat you like family. Montevideo is by far the biggest city and is very historic. Punta del Este is a big resort and very pretty. Keep moving north along the coast and you can find some wonderful laid back places to vacation. I spent time...
  7. While reading your post and the various replies, I was stuck by the notion that finding and attending a support group has a lot in common with finding and attending a church. In both cases, the leaders usually
  8. I can vouch for this because that is what happened to me. I was DX'd as a celiac baby at Johns-Hopkins in the early 50's. Doctors believed I would outgrow celiac disease and eventually put me back on a regular diet when I was about 3 or 4. From then to my early 20's, symptoms were relatively mild. After that, problems became progressively worse. In my...
  9. Does anyone have any recent info about celiac-friendly hotels in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico? Also, I'd be interested in info about hotels that are convenient for wildlife (particularly bird) photography. Thanks.
  10. Do you know if you have the same reaction to organic corn?
  11. I was reading your post and had the same exact thought the moment before I got to this sentence. It made me laugh. I don't feel so bad being paranoid myself now. This is one of the reasons why I simply do not eat anything made by anyone. I don't want to be in this situation. The bottom line is that even if the person is the comsummate baker / cook...
  12. I've experienced that on accasion. Once I got serious about avoiding foods that aggravated my acid reflux though, the problem went away.
  13. The books I read were borrowed from the local library. After I retired, I had the time and desire to read more. However, there was the issue do I keep buying books and filling up my book shelves or do I buy an e-reader. Then one day, I had a head-slap moment and thought, why not spend no money and just join the library!
  14. The throat problem took over 3 yrs to figure out and deal with. The solution was more than just eating organic. The reaction is extremely well-defined, predictable and reproducible. The neck swelling is not generalized. There is a particular mass of tissue under the right side of my jaw that swells up. The best I could figure out is that it is the...
  15. I've switched to organic-only and find it much simpler than the gluten-free diet. The local grocery has an organic section for fruits and vegetables. There is also a specialty grocery nearby which offers a comprehensive selection of organic products. Packaged foods can be identified as organic by the government specified organic logo. I'm in the U.S....
  16. What sort of allergic reaction(s) is the 3 YO having? Is it a gluten-like reaction? Rash? Runny nose / sinus reaction? Something else?
  17. Thanks. I had searched a while back but did not come across this particular article. I'll mention it to my dentist at my next appointment. I'm not going to hold my breath but, who knows, maybe he'll consider it.
  18. Are there any published studies that show this? I have enamel loss and my dentist is always on my back about "brushing too hard". If there are studies that show a link between celiac disease and tooth and/or gum issues, I'd like to mention them to him. Thanks.
  19. I just started reading "Our Stolen Future" (1996). In chapter 4, the effects of DES are discussed. At one point, there is mention that supposedly there is growing evidence (circa 1996) that DES-exposed women have a greater liklihood of developing autoimmune diseases. The book does not mention celiac disease but does list other autoimmune conditions commonly...
  20. I definitely second that. A side benefit would be that it would be an object lesson for non-celiac friends and family. A while back, the owner of a local gluten-free bakery addressed our support group. He mentioned that his customers not only included celiacs but also some of the top hotels in Phila. He sold his baked goods to them not as "gluten-free...
  21. I think it makes a lot of sense.
  22. There's some good stuff here. Thanks for posting the links.
  23. Generally speaking, are gastroenterologists more celiac-aware and more celiac-friendly than GP
  24. I've had to deal with this and regrettably now fit the profile of a gluten Nazi. The reason is that the only approach I've found is to adopt a "just say No" attitude. I never eat food prepared by family, friends or co-workers. Even worse, if someone buys something marked "gluten-free" and I'm unfamiliar with the product, I refuse to eat it until I can...
