  1. Some wallpaper paste contains wheat and I had a problem with that once. I was re-wallpapering a room and had an unexpected glutening. I did some checking and learned about wallpaper paste. It's probable that the wallpaper paste used for the wallpaper I stripped off the wall contained wheat. I breathed the dust and inadvertantly swallowed some of it. ...
  2. A couple of days ago, I mentioned in a post that one doctor once asked if I ever considered whether I might be a hypochrondriac and then suggested I seek professional counseling. Of course now that I think of it, my ex thought I needed professional counseling too. Maybe there's a pattern here. Divorce is tough but people get over it. If it happens...
  3. Thanks for the ideas, esp. the ginger glazed veggies. I like ginger and those sound tasty. In regard to potatoes, I react to yams as well. Sweet potatoes are on my questionable list along with things like squash. I'm not sure about those. This hasn't been as easy as gluten. After going gluten-free, if I got sick I simply looked for the hidden gluten...
  4. First, thanks for the ideas. They are definitely appreciated. Second, if you had/have the same intolerances, would you mind a couple of questions? 1) What type of reaction do you have? 2) Did you ever determine what caused the intolerances? 3) Have you found anything particularly effective in dealing with them? 4) Is it reasonable to expect...
  5. Just a quick survey to see if anyone with multiple allergies came up with a satisfying menu yesterday. I'm always looking for ideas that provide a chance to get out of the rut of eating the same things over and over again. The following are off-limits for me: gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, legumes, nuts, corn, potatoes, cinnamon, olives, any vegetable oil...
  6. Doctors ignored my symptoms for over 30 years. One actually sat down with me in his office and in a very concerned and sincere manner asked if I had ever considered that I was simply a hypochrondriac. He suggested psychological counseling. Of course, nowadays the DX and treatment situation is even worse. This can be seen by listening to drug ads. When...
  7. I would not consider her delusional for thinking that she can simply snap her fingers and have a man support her. The fact that she apparently has been doing this for nearly 40 years testifies that it is doable. There is a plentiful supply of men who are willing to go this route. There will always be a willing candidate and there always will be greener...
  8. I think it is fairly common knowledge that guys can potentially think with three things. Two of those are their brain and heart. When it comes to women, those two are the least used. I'm 57 YO and find it very easy to identify the classic gold-digger. Fortunately of me, factors like celiac disease, a non-consumer life style and choice of intrests on...
  9. I've tried two different brands of gluten-free oats on two different occasions and had reactions both times. I also react to very small amounts of gluten. Oats were my most common breakfast food before going gluten-free so the hope has always been that I could start eating them again, for variety if nothing else. That doesn't seem likely any more.
  10. Apologies for the off-topic response. Since you are a Sanibel regular, can you tell me if it is good for bird photography? I've never been there but bumped into someone who said it was a great birding destination.
  11. If you are reacting to beans, you may want to avoid cinnamon. Two and a half yrs ago, I developed a reaction to eggs, dairy, nuts, soy, beans, corn, potatoes, olives and cinnamon. The last one (cinnamon) seemed strange until I read on this list and elsewhere that most cinnamon in the U.S. is not true cinnamon and is from a legume. Just a thought. As...
  12. When the testing is done, I'd be very interested in knowing the final treatment or diet you end up with. I suddenly have a lot of allergies now and am down to a handful of foods albeit on my own, not by a doctor's direction. I experience the symptoms you mention (plus more, none of which are celiac-like). The one that you mention and which really caught...
  13. Thanks! This is the type of info I was looking for. Based on my searches, it looks like January is the best time to visit, esp for watching eagles. seattlepi.com reported that a record 580 eagles were counted on Jan. 3. Another site had photos of the annual bald eagle festival which just took place. Seems like a definite must-see place. Thanks...
  14. Thanks! I checked the site and it looks like a great place to vacation.
  15. It's a new year and I'd like to plan some birding trips outside of my local area. I'd be interested in hearing from other birders about their area of their country. I'd like to know the best times of year to visit their area, what to see at that time, where best to see it. If outside the US, info about reliable bird guides would be useful. Info about...
  16. The experience of the person who started www.celiacsingles.com seems to be the norm. If I understand correctly, there are just too few celiacs to make it work or make it financially viable. A simple alternative might be for interested celiacs to collectively agree on one of the popular match sites (match.com, Yahoo personals, etc.) and use it. If everyone...
  17. I spent a week there aboard a dive boat. I contacted them ahead of them and worked out the details. There were no problems. Islands are obviously best visited by boat. It is not unsual for boat operators to accomodate special diets. The bottom line though is that the Galapagos Islands are so fantastic that they are worth experiencing even if it means...
  18. I don't have any names but I did spend a couple of weeks there for work several years ago. Didn't have any problems. Just be prepared to eat late. 9 PM is about when thoughts turn to dinner. 10 PM you eat and then afterwards dancing (make sure to take your dance shoes).
  19. The first one is definitely one of my favorites. It is a real gem. The other two are very good. The second is good if you normally do not watch anime. Amelie Princess Mononoke Chocolat If you want something a bit more serious: Black Book Don't bother with Pirates of the Caribbean: End of the World. It was a real disappointment.
  20. I was DX'd in the early 50's at Johns Hopkins as a celiac baby. By age 4, I was back on a regular diet because the doctors believed I had outgrown the condition. 50 years later, I can testify that I never really did outgrow it. All the doctors accomplished was to derail my future health.
  21. It's encouraging to think that future doctors are being taught something about celiac disease.
  22. Count me in as well. In addition to gluten, I now have intolerances to soy, beans/peas, corn, eggs, dairy, nuts, chicken, potatoes, olives, cinnamon, safflower and canola oil. It's not, where do you start? It's, where and when does it stop? Taken together, gluten, soy and corn eliminate almost all processed food. I prefer a vegan diet but that is impossible...
  23. If you think obsessing is bad, wait until you start dreaming about gluten. I've had dreams where I'll eat something and suddenly realize that it contains gluten and I shouldn't be eating it.
  24. Avoiding soy is tough. When I was trying to eliminate it, I ran into one source that surprised me. Apparently, mono- and diglycerides can be soy-based. I had a reaction after eating some ice cream. I went to the manfacturer's web site to check whether ingredients had changed. The ingredient list was the same as what was on the carton and there was no...
