ARCHIVED My Stomach Is Making The Worst Noises!
codetalker replied to skinnyminny's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have the same problem. Usually in the morning but sometimes in the afternoon, my stomach can make very loud noises. It is a real problem if I am in a meeting at work. I've tracked it down to the combination of two things. First, it happens when there is nothing in my stomach. Second, it tends to be associated with stress. For instance, It happens... -
ARCHIVED Hello To All/new Guy Questions
codetalker replied to nephlim's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That's the way it happened for me. Not as sudden or as severe as it appears you are experiencing. However, there are a lot of similarities. Symptoms, such as the ones you mention, started in my mid-20's and appeared pretty much out-of-the-blue. Stress and other factors seemed to aggravate the situation. Prior to that time, I could and did eat anything... -

ARCHIVED I Just Got Glutened For The 1st Time. . .
codetalker replied to ptkds's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I can usually tell within 3 to 5 minutes. None of the symptoms appear that fast. However, there are two sensations that are immediate. The first is the type of feeling the precedes food poisoning. It's the suspicion that whatever you ate isn't agreeing with you. The second is my stomach tenses up and starts to gurgle (not the rumbling the comes from... -
Spelt will cause a gluten reaction. I know this first-hand.

ARCHIVED San Francisco/bay Area- Weird Fish
codetalker replied to elonwy's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I've bemoaned the loss of just about anything breaded and fried. My favorite was fish and chips in Tobago where they used flying fish. Absolutely delicious. I'm too late for Weird Fish though. Soy is on my prohibited list now. -
ARCHIVED Cheesecake
codetalker replied to Rebecca47's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Someone posted about cheesecake a couple of weeks ago. In response to that post, I mentioned that there is a gluten-free bakery in Philadelphia that makes great cheesecake. They can ship their products, which would be the only option for you. Their URL is: Open Original Shared Link My only relationship to them is as a customer. -
ARCHIVED Need An Answer Today Please
codetalker replied to Marlene's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Employers may have had a hand in creating this situation. My company changed the policy so that sick days, vacation days, etc. are combined into PTO days. Now, there is no distinction between sick days and vacation days. I know for a fact that some coworkers prefer to "be sick" at work so that their PTO days can be used when they are healthy. -
ARCHIVED Needing To Rant....very Frustrated! Family Sucks Sometimes!
codetalker replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm the black sheep of my family as well as my group at work. A long time ago in typical black sheep fashion, I looked at all the craziness around me and decided that, if being a black sheep meant I was not one of the crazies, then being a black sheep was something to be proud of. Now, in response, to craziness, insensitivity, callousness, etc., I simply... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Know A Doctor In Southern Delaware?
codetalker replied to grannynanny's topic in Doctors
There's a group in Wilmington but that's a bit of a drive for you. They meet monthly at the ChristianaCare Medical Center. There is a Yahoo group called "gluten-free" that can be watched for a post about the next meeting. If I am not mistaken, their last meeting was this past Sunday. As far as doctors are concerned, I am afraid I cannot help you there... -
ARCHIVED Can Symptoms Come And Go?
codetalker replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would have to say that the outward, visible symptoms can vary, sometimes quite dramatically. At the same time, the internal, non-visible damage continues. Consider: I first had symptoms as a baby when solid food was introduced. I was eventually DX’d at Johns-Hopkins. The DX was Celiac Baby, which was common in the early 50’s. The expectation was... -

ARCHIVED How Quickly After And For How Long Do You Get Sick?
codetalker replied to azmom3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I start feeling the symptoms within 3 to 5 minutes. The worse of the physical symptoms last up to 3 days with all of them usually gone after a week. The emotional component lasts about 2 weeks. It is usually marked by a very brief rush of euphoria. That may sound weird but a long time ago some other posters mentioned the same. No explanation why that... -
Thanks for the warning. Someone from a Lyme Disease support group spoke at one of our Celiac support group meetings. The speaker mentioned that northern Delaware and southeastern Pennsylvania is one of the Lyme Disease hot spots in the country. I have two friends who have been DX'd with it. I think I will stay with celiac disease.

I was at a nearby wildlife refuge this weekend and found a deer way back in a field. Sections of the refuge have been closed off for hunting. When I looked at the photo at home, I noticed it looks like the deer was nicked in the ear by a hunter. My first impression was that the deer was looking back at the hunter. http://www.brandtbeach.com/Photos/Misc...

I agree but it does get harder each year. Early Thanksgiving morning, I turned on the car radio and the first song was, Grandma got run over by a reindeer. That killed the magic for this holiday season.

ARCHIVED Quick! What Brands Of Canned Sweet Potatoes Are gluten-free?
codetalker replied to emcmaster's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I agree. With corn and soy allergies now, I've resorted to cooking almost everything from scratch. Instead of canned sweet potatoes, I bake my own. Everything about them is better than canned. Plus, things like sweet potatoes and waffles leave a nice aroma in the kitchen. I love coming home, opening the kitchen door and getting a whiff of the waffles... -

Bruce's Yams are OK. Ate them for years with no problems. They're off my list now only because of the corn syrup. -
ARCHIVED What Do You Put In Rice To Make It Taste Good?
codetalker replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have been trying different types of rice now that my local grocery has started carrying alternatives. The best so far has been Bhutanese Red Rice. Expensive but a nice change of pace. I tried it in a simple dish of rice, sliced olives, sliced mushrooms and a Herb-Ox chicken boullion cube. Unfortunatel, the boullion cubes contain corn and I recently... -
ARCHIVED What Do You Put In Rice To Make It Taste Good?
codetalker replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I do. Before going gluten-free, it used to be oatmeal and raisins. Now, it's brown rice and raisins. None of the extras but may try them for variety. Thanks for the ideas. -

ARCHIVED Olives?
codetalker replied to cycler's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I shop at Acme and eat the store-brand olives. Never had any problems with them. Nonetheless, it is always good to check ingredients before buying anything. Like yours, my salads are starting to get a little lean. Tomatoes, chick peas and pickles are things of the past now due to new allergies. The pickles are so because of corn (high fructose corn...
