ARCHIVED How Do I Move A Post?
Ursa Major replied to jkmunchkin's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Only the moderators and the administrator can move posts. I'm sure somebody will move it, don't worry about it! Okay, I just did it. -
ARCHIVED Mikey's Enterolab Is Positive
Ursa Major replied to Nantzie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Nancy, the good thing is that he is only 2, so you have time to condition him to not eat gluten before he starts school. And always having treats with you in case somebody brings something he likes is a good idea. Because he is really too little to understand why he can't have something yummy too, when everybody else has it. It's almost too bad that he doesn... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Results
Ursa Major replied to mcs12's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am glad you finally have proof that you were right about the gluten. I find it hard to trust any doctors, because too many of them appear to be completely clueless about too many things. -
ARCHIVED How Do I Decide Which Diagnosis To Pursue?
Ursa Major replied to mythreesuns's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Toni, you may be intolerant to all lectins, they are what caused the terrible joint pain for me. There are several groups of lectins, and you may not be intolerant to all of them. But in order to find out, you initially need to eliminate them all, and then try one group at a time to see if they cause a problem. They are: All grains (including rice and... -
ARCHIVED My First Holiday Season Gluten Free--stressing Out Already!
Ursa Major replied to olalisa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Offer bringing a dessert, to appease the hosts, and let them know in advance about your celiac disease. Talk to them, to see if it is possible to have some plain vegetables, and to have the dressing on the side so the turkey won't be contaminated. If you have the feeling it isn't going to work out, let them know you'll be bringing your own food, because you... -
ARCHIVED Was My D An Early Preg. Symptom Or Glutening?
Ursa Major replied to alexisb's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I was pregnant many times (even though I 'only' managed to have five kids), and can assure you, that diarrhea is definitely NOT a sign of being pregnant. If you didn't have gluten, maybe the culprit is something else you're intolerant to, like dairy or soy. -
ARCHIVED Emma And How We Are Getting On
Ursa Major replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I am glad that she has stopped losing weight now. Are you sure she isn't intolerant to something else on top of the gluten, that causes her diarrhea? It would be so much better to eliminate the offending food, than giving her Immodium all the time. Have you eliminated dairy? What about soy? Those would be the next things I'd get rid of, to see if things improve... -
ARCHIVED Dh Iodine Test On My 10 Year Old -yikes!
Ursa Major replied to Isabella's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Wow, that sounds scary! I've never heard of that before. It could show if I have DH (which I suspect I do, but I had an idiot dermatologist who claims I have just eczema). On the other hand, I'd rather not have a reaction like your daughter. I hope you figure it all out. -
To keep taking the Dapsone when your liver enzymes are that high is a huge mistake, don't do it. You may go into liver failure! Yes, Dapsone is known to damage the liver, that's why your doctor has to monitor it. Have you started the gluten-free diet? That really is the only viable treatment for DH, the Dapsone is just supposed to calm things down until...

ARCHIVED Are These Heart Palputations?
Ursa Major replied to amber-rose's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Really, low levels of some nutrients, specifically iron, magnesium or potassium will cause arrhythmias. They were just awful and constant last year when my potassium was low (and a doctor told me that was the cause of my palpitations). You seriously need your levels of those things I listed checked. Everybody who has just been diagnosed with celiac disease... -
Thanks, Judy. I tried swimming. And while I really enjoy swimming, I find it gets me to where afterwards I can't keep my eyes open from exhaustion, and have trouble driving home. I get awfully dizzy with tiredness after swimming, too. After I took my nephew to the beach last month (and we only swam around and snorkeled a bit for less than an hour), I had...

ARCHIVED Are These Heart Palputations?
Ursa Major replied to amber-rose's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
How do you know you're not anemic, have you had your iron levels checked? Yes, those sound like heart palpitations. They could be caused by quite a few things. Some of them could be anemia, a lack of magnesium or potassium, or a combination of those (and I'm probably forgetting some things). You need to have your levels of those essential nutrients checked... -
Norah, I don't like the sound of that lump. If it isn't any better by the morning, go to the ER or a walk-in clinic (unless you can see your doctor right away) to have it looked at. Really, I am serious.

ARCHIVED Test Results
Ursa Major replied to nikki182's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, instead of thinking you're an idiot, look at it as a test. It proved that gluten is a definite problem. That's what my doctor said when I ate something that made me awfully sick within a month of being on the diet. It confirmed that gluten is a huge problem and needs to be avoided. If you have an aunt with confirmed celiac disease, you have one... -
Carla, I've never really had any energy, even as a child. I thought everybody felt like that, and made myself do what my siblings did, even though I wasn't having any fun bikeriding, swimming, long walks, running around playing soccer etc., feeling so utterly exhausted. All my life I forced myself to do stuff anyway. I still do, because I have no choice....

It sounds like something that happens to me sometimes, and is very painful and scary. With me it is swallowed air that seems to be stuck in the esophagus. If that is what it is, to try to get it down by drinking water or eating something else makes it worse. Try making yourself burb, or just wait it out. If that doesn't work, I suggest you mention it to...

ARCHIVED Completely Baffled!
Ursa Major replied to angielackner's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Angie, it is not likely that all the genes for celiac disease have been identified yet. Apparently you don't have the ones they're testing for presently. On the other hand, they likely didn't test you for the gluten intolerance genes, which you may well have. Enterolab will test for those Open Original Shared Link. So, if you can afford it, you may want to... -
Yeah, me too. If I listen to people telling me to exercise, I take a week to recover sufficiently to do anything. Sometimes I barely have the energy to shower and actually get dressed afterwards without lying down first! And, like you, usually I can either go shopping or cook, but not both. So, when I have to go shopping, I'll buy something like pizza...

ARCHIVED Enterolab Test
Ursa Major replied to Mayflowers's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You don't need any dairy, whether from cows, goats or whatever for calcium. In fact, the calcium in cows milk can't even be utilized by humans, especially due to the enzymes needed to digest it are killed by pasteurizing it. In fact, NOBODY needs milk for anything. Milk from any species (humans included) is to feed the babies from that species. Have you... -
My doctor orders any tests I ask her to, because she admits that she doesn't know a whole lot on celiac disease. Who does your pediatrician think she is, not to listen to you when you want to make sure your son is okay? Nini is right, they're supposed to work for us, if they lose all their patients they'll be out on the street. I agree, switch to a different...

ARCHIVED Millet Made My Son Sick?
Ursa Major replied to jenad's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Would you mind posting the whole ingredients list here? Either there was something other than the millet or flax in it that he is intolerant to (like soy, for instance), or he may be intolerant to grains in general. -
One thing that also really gets me is, that he says that people with low adrenal function often don't feel like eating breakfast (no appetite at all), and that is about the worst thing to do. It's going to be a big challenge for me to eat breakfast before 10:00 AM, because I have a habit of not eating anything until the afternoon, I simply have no appetite...

I completely agree with everything said already. The gluten-free diet is a perfectly healthy diet, and absolutely does NOT need to be monitored by anybody! That's totally ridiculous. Apparently this doctor doesn't know what a gluten-free diet means, and that NOBODY needs gluten containing grains to be healthy. I seriously believe that it would be better for...

ARCHIVED Salicylate Sensitive Celiacs
Ursa Major replied to tailz's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Tailz, don't use the info on that site. It's all about using guaifenesin, which is supposed to fix fibromyalgia (as long as you take it indefinitely), and claims that salicylates block it's effectiveness. Guaifenesin, in my own experience (and I used it for nearly two years), is utterly useless for fibro. Cutting out the gluten and salicylates is the REAL... -
ARCHIVED Metamucil Question
Ursa Major replied to orhs66's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Metamucil is sweetened with Aspartame (even though the ingredients list won't tell you that, my pharmacist called).
