  1. Hi Rebecca, and welcome to this board. Well, I don't think the problem with the sauce was the bourbon (at least it probably wasn't, but who knows), but rather whatever it was thickened with. Many people will get worse reactions from being glutened after being gluten-free for a while. Your body was in a constant state of being poisoned before, so wouldn...
  2. Claire, the founder and administrator of this site is Scott Adams (who also has celiac disease, by the way, he founded this site and this forum to help other sufferers). The newsletter you mentioned is his newsletter, with useful information on new developments on celiac disease. As Peter (psawyer) mentioned, you are able to opt out of getting it, which you...
  3. 1. FIRST NAME? Ursula 2. WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE? After somebody my mom knew (forget who that was) 3. WHEN DID YOU LAST CRY? A few minutes ago 4. DO YOU LIKE YOUR HANDWRITING? sort of 5. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LUNCH MEAT? salami 6. KIDS? Sarah, 26 (husband Jason, 30), Karen, 25 (husband Daryl, 27), John, 23 (wife Katie, 22), Janet...
  4. Rachelle, I am so glad you finally know without a doubt what is wrong. Now you can get on with your (gluten-free) life. I am no expert with the genes, so will let others comment on those.
  5. Nicole, I used to love my fruits, too. But now when I give in and eat fruits other than peeled pears, and occasionally peeled golden delicious apples, I pay the price. I ate an orange two nights ago, and I am in pain. My arms and legs are aching quite badly. Imagine, from just ONE orange! It really wasn't worth it. I eat meat (including fish) and vegetables...
  6. You're right to give up on gaining weight at this point. I agree with the others. The first thing you need to do is concentrate on healing your digestive system. When your bowels will function again, and absorb the food properly, you'll start gaining weight without even trying. Patience and persistence is the key here. Tell your family that their pressure...
  7. I have NEVER heard that an x-ray of the small bowel is helpful in diagnosing celiac disease. It seems like a silly idea.
  8. You did it, congratulations! I'm always glad to be able to help.
  9. Okay, I'm trying to answer, lying in bed with my husband's laptop. I am having one of those days, when I am so dizzy, that even moving my head might make me vomit. I've been having this problem since giving birth to my fourth child 21 years ago. Good thing it only happens once every couple of months or so. No, my pain isn't gone. It's just not bad enough...
  10. Okay, I think I'll do a little explaining. From the time I was three years old, I'd get awful, horrible pains in both of my legs, especially after walking any longer distance. Was told those were 'growing pains'. By the time I was seven, the awful backpains started. The doctors tried physio, and eventually gave up on me. I was always skinny as a stick...
  11. If it says wheat free, a product can still contain rye or barley. If it says gluten-free, it (hopefully) won't contain any part of a gluten containing grain.
  12. Welcome back moonunit! That's hard to believe, that you had THREE positive blood tests, and your doctors, including that clueless GI, claim you can't have celiac disease? What is wrong with them? Good for you, to just take your life and health into your own hands now. What are you doing about the osteopenia? You should be tested for your levels of vitamin...
  13. I find that rice gives me pretty much the same reaction as gluten. When I tested rice in January, I got a stomach ache that night, nothing dramatic. So, I thought I could eat it again. But the next morning I had all the symptoms of being glutened (joint pains, stomach and bowel cramps, diarrhea, gas, bloating, acid reflux, tearing eyes, rashes, fatigue.....
  14. I'm 53, and self-diagnosed myself ten months ago, still struggling but much better. But I've had celiac disease symptoms all my life, at least from the age of three. Too bad doctors are so clueless.
  15. Hi B, and welcome to this board. I hate to say this, but yes, the flour dust is a problem, and could stop your husband from getting completely better. Last Valentine's day I baked a cake for my husband with normal flour. I didn't use a mixer, but carefully mixed it by hand, trying to stir up as little dust as possible. Still, I had diarrhea and was sick...
  16. Thanks, Scott, for coming and clarifying things so quickly. But could you please let us know if I am right with believing that our homepage link in our profile can be a link to anything (within reason, of course), even if it advertises a business? Cara, I didn't mean you added more confusion to this discussion, but rather that I am confused over not finding...
  17. How long have you been gluten-free? I found that initially my fibromyalgia symptoms (excruciating muscle, joint, backpain and headaches, weakness, no energy at all and others) were greatly improved. I had, two weeks into the gluten-free diet, cut out all lectins as well, which were causing the joint pain, and the buckling of my knees and ankles. But then...
  18. You're right, Debbie, of course that post has long 'disappeared' as well. And religion has nothing to do with either one of them, but advertising has.
  19. Click on 'My Controls' on the upper right side. Scroll down to 'Personal Profile' (on the left). Click on 'Edit signature'. Yours wouldn't say anything yet. You will see a window just like for a post, write in it what you want your signature to say, click on 'update my signature', and voila, it will henceforth appear under all of your posts.
  20. I agree with TCA. Especially the chapstick would be a huge problem, as obviously, some of it will end up in his tummy. But soap is as well, as you wash your hands with it, and then touch the food you eat.
  21. Carla, in this case we have the one who made the 'law' to ask him exactly what he meant, and to hopefully change the wording in his rules in such a way that there can't be confusion. Because I think that we can argue about what the rule exactly means until we are blue in the face, without being able to figure it out. I have PMd Scott already, and hope...
  22. jcc and gfp, you confuse me. I went into your profiles, and you don't have a link to your sites there. There is a spot to list your homepage in your profile, and that is where I would expect to find the links to your sites. The rules about not linking to a business site or whatever site are meant for your signature, or in your posts, as far as I am concerned...
  23. I am pretty much all-food-free, but I'm glad I don't have to give up water, air and sunshine. Just kidding, but some days that's the way it seems to be.
  24. Don't be so sure about the hives. I get hives when glutened, amongst other symptoms. You know, I am in Canada, too. And the government insurance would NOT pay for the bloodwork for my youngest daughter, we had to pay the $130.00 by ourselves, even though my doctor ordered the bloodwork. Total waste of money, too. My doctor had no clue what tests to order...
  25. I believe I have read that they're sweetened with barley malt. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, please. If I'm right, then they contain gluten.
