ARCHIVED Apprehensive About Going To Doctor With This
Ursa Major replied to Joyous's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I understand where you are coming from. If you don't want to go through with the 'official' route of testing (which can be very frustrating and drawn out and not give you any answers in the end), why don't you just go gluten-free and get tested with Open Original Shared Link? Their tests will still pick up gluten intolerance up to a year after going gluten... -
Try drinking lots of prune juice and eat cooked prunes as well. For me prune juice always worked an awful lot better than 'official' laxatives or fiber. Also drink tons of water. And STOP eating gluteny food! It simply isn't worth it, right? Steve, there is no need to even think about impaction after only two days of being constipated! I'd start to...

ARCHIVED Link Between Celiac And Down Syndrome?
Ursa Major replied to Q1821's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I just want to say that those ultrasounds can be very wrong. I know a little boy who was supposed to be severely handicapped. When his mother had an ultrasound towards the end of her pregnancy, they told her that it showed he had extremely short limbs and a severe heart defect. At his birth, all kinds of doctors were there to look after him, and to whisk... -
I get that awful burn (accompanied by diarrhea) from potatoes. So, it can be caused by things other than gluten or dairy. Gluten will give me D, but it won't burn. Only potatoes do that to me.

ARCHIVED Testing Question
Ursa Major replied to Yellow Rose's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Why would your uncle not just be happy to have found the problem and leave it at that? I don't know how long he has been gluten-free. But his villi will have healed a great deal, and he is planning on destroying them again, for the sake of testing. In some people that will cause such a shock to the system that it results in severe, permanent damage and could... -
Whoa, coming on here startled me! I love the green. But the quotes are too bold, and the normal print for the posts is too small and too light, and therefore hard to read. It is giving me a headache as well. The ads were there before, nothing has changed. They just stand out more now. If Scott wouldn't sell the space for ads to companies, he wouldn't be...

ARCHIVED Wheat Allergy Vs. Celiac Disease - Exclude Each Other?
Ursa Major replied to woollymonkey's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you've been gluten-free for months it is no wonder you tested negative on the blood tests. Just eating some a couple of days before doesn't change that. I bet it is a false negative, there is no way it is a valid test. Lots of people have celiac disease and a wheat allergy as well, they don't exclude each other at all. Your tummy problems could be... -
ARCHIVED What Qualifies As "diarrhea"?
Ursa Major replied to Carol the Dabbler's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sometimes I get terrible cramping, and have to run to the bathroom many times a day. Other times I just feel great urgency, rush to the bathroom, have an explosion of watery D and that is it. I am fine after that. The dictionaries are mostly looking at D from being sick with a virus or food poisoning or something like that. If you look at it from that... -
ARCHIVED Making Pot Roast, But There Is A Problem
Ursa Major replied to colorado's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
If your strainer is made out of plastic, then it is the culprit. It is absolutely NOT possible to clean it well enough to be safe (just like toasters). Buy a new one, they aren't that expensive. I bet you'll be fine then. The glass cutting board should be fine, though. It is wooden ones and/or scratched plastic ones you need to replace. -
ARCHIVED Making Pot Roast, But There Is A Problem
Ursa Major replied to colorado's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Have you really, really scrubbed your crockpot? Twice would be even better! Did you cut your veggies on a cutting board that was used for gluten items in the past? Or rinse them with a strainer that used to be used for gluten pasta? I doubt that the meat is the problem. Is it possible you are intolerant to potatoes? They will give me symptoms similar... -
ARCHIVED You Need To Read This
Ursa Major replied to Marlene's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Thanks for thinking of me. But my ferritin right now is in the optimal level, at 105. I used to be severely anemic. So, no, I definitely don't suffer from iron overload. It is very rare in women, especially when still menstruating, as it is almost impossible to get iron overload because of losing blood every month. But men have to be careful not to take... -
ARCHIVED I Cant Do This Anymore
Ursa Major replied to confused's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Your son knows he has the celiac disease gene, and he knows he has tested positive via Enterolab. Personally, I don't believe a positive biopsy would make any difference in his attitude towards the gluten-free diet. It will just mean more torture and expense for nothing. He is a stubborn teenager who is in denial. No amount of testing will change that... -
ARCHIVED What Qualifies As "diarrhea"?
Ursa Major replied to Carol the Dabbler's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Diarrhea doesn't have to involve any cramping at all. Loose stools is anything that isn't formed. It can just be mushy, or it can be like water. It can be like an explosion, making a real mess, or just be.... well....... loose. And your dictionary is wrong when it talks about 'excessive frequency', as it can just be a one-time thing. That is my experience... -
ARCHIVED So Excited To Get Allergy Testing !
Ursa Major replied to keylimepie's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi, and welcome to these boards! Unfortunately, celiac disease is not an allergy, and won't show up on allergy testing. You need to see a GP or a GI for blood testing to find out about celiac disease. And in order for those tests to be accurate, you need to be consuming gluten. Mind you, the diet trial is a valid test, too. I don't have an official... -
ARCHIVED Gi Doc Said Dont Need To Eat Gluten For Blood Test?
Ursa Major replied to tbradley93's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, you don't seem to understand that the blood tests after a year are supposed to tell the doctor if you've followed the diet. If you have been cheating and haven't healed as a result, your blood tests could come back elevated. If, on the other hand, you've been strictly gluten-free, your numbers should be in the normal range. The three years are garbage... -
ARCHIVED Gi Doc Said Dont Need To Eat Gluten For Blood Test?
Ursa Major replied to tbradley93's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Unfortunately, this doctor doesn't have a clue what he is talking about. Three years? By then your intestines will be perfectly healed, and you'd be told you definitely don't have celiac disease, even if you do. After being gluten-free for a month you will likely get a false negative on your blood tests, possibly even on your endoscopy, unless the damage... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Sensitivity/leaky Gut
Ursa Major replied to jasonD2's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Jason, a leaky gut always has a cause. It could be undiagnosed celiac disease, it will inevitably cause a leaky gut. But, as Carla says, Lyme disease can also cause leaky gut, including a gluten sensitivity. If you have Lyme disease and it is treated successfully, your intolerances, including the gluten intolerance, could all go away. So, you need to... -
ARCHIVED Just Started gluten-free Diet - Help! Feeling Horrible!
Ursa Major replied to katetastic619's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Kate, and welcome to our boards. Yes, many people will have horrible withdrawal symptoms when first going gluten-free. Those may take up to two weeks before you'll start feeling better. Also, in order to get better, you are well advised to eliminate dairy and soy as well, as those can hinder healing and keep you feeling sick. -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Without Official Diagnosis
Ursa Major replied to mairin's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I believe you are doing the right thing. Both my oldest daughters have put all of their children on a gluten-free diet without an official diagnosis (that is seven children, plus themselves), because I obviously have a huge problem with gluten (I am also self-diagnosed). Some of the kids didn't have symptoms, but the ones who did have had significant improvements... -
You are right. In fact, if you have undiagnosed celiac disease, you are almost guaranteed to eventually develop cancer of the digestive system, most often lymphoma. Here are some links to read up on the evidence: https://www.celiac.com/articles/701/1/Celia...Diet/Page1.html Open Original Shared Link

ARCHIVED gluten-free Cakes In Canada
Ursa Major replied to Annaem's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Those cakes look fabulous. My only concern would be that she makes cakes with gluten as well, which would make me worry about cross contamination. -
ARCHIVED Youngest Age For Reliable Blood Test?
Ursa Major replied to dandelionmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If your daughters were off gluten for four months, then eating gluten again for four weeks will likely result in both of them having negative blood work, even if they have celiac disease. At this point I am afraid that the only accurate testing would be with Enterolab, as their test would still be accurate up to a year after eliminating gluten. Especially... -
ARCHIVED Gallbladder
Ursa Major replied to JustMe75's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes gallbladder problems are extremely common for people with celiac disease. I had my gallbladder removed fifteen years ago. Somebody else did a poll once, and it is incredible how many people here had their gallbladders removed, many of them quite young, like you. It sure sounds like your daughter may have celiac disease as well. Having her tested is... -
Call them and say you are coming in (give a day and time) to pick up your reports, to please have the copies ready at the check-in desk. That is what I do, and they never argue with me but just have them ready. Obviously, what the nurse said is nonsense, the initial report clearly says that things are NOT normal! Also, if you have osteoporosis,...

ARCHIVED My Dermatologist Is Not Sure What It Is, But I Think It's Dh
Ursa Major replied to l-lyn01's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
It sure sounds like DH to me. Especially since you are still eating gluten! You were diagnosed with celiac disease three years ago, you absolutely NEED to be 100% gluten-free! I bet when you finally are eliminating gluten for good, the rashes and itchiness will go away. Not magically over night, of course, it will take time. In fact, you can still get outbreaks...
