  1. Yes, I did. I have no choice, as here in Ontario we have a severe doctor shortage, and nobody takes new patients. If I drop my family doctor, I'd be unable to see any specialists, as they won't see you without a referral from a family doctor (I've tried when my last doctor moved to the States, and I was very fortunate to then be able to get the doctor I have...
  2. Yes, that doctor surely doesn't know what he is talking about. He is obviously an idiot.
  3. It seems to me that here in Ontario doctors in general are very ignorant about celiac disease, and therefore don't order the tests very often. My doctor had no clue what to order when I asked for Susie to be tested a year ago, she copied from the brochure I brought in. And since our all-wise government doesn't appear to think celiac disease screening...
  4. It appears that you have the 'official' celiac disease genes, not just one, but both. So, you don't need the gene test any more, which is included in the big package at Enterolab. Why don't you call them to see if they can give you a deal on the big package, if you exclude the gene test? Because it really is the best test. Otherwise I would at this point...
  5. Yes, it is very likely that your daughter gets glutened by the cat. Cats lick themselves all over to wash, and if the cat eats food with gluten in it, there is gluten on the cat's fur. Why won't your husband buy gluten-free cat food? Cats can't tolerate gluten any more than we can. Cats aren't meant to eat any grain at all! Only meat and some vegetables...
  6. The problem with this way of thinking is, that too many gastroenterologists know close to nothing about celiac disease (sadly, because they SHOULD be the specialists on celiac disease). Still, you should ask him all those questions (if you bother with the biopsy).
  7. It looks like you've found the culprit - gluten (and it is not just in wheat, but rye and barley as well). Unfortunately, it is quite likely that all of your tests will come back negative, because in order for them to be positive, they should have been done before you stopped eating gluten containing foods. And no, eating wheat for a week before the biopsy...
  8. What is the back surgery for? I find that I get terrible back pain not just from gluten, but from all lectin foods. Those include all grains (not just gluten containing ones), which include rice and corn, eggs, all dairy, legumes and nightshade vegetables (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant). My back will go out completely when eating those foods.
  9. I believe it is caused by food intolerances. I used to get that awful crawly feeling all the time. It decreased on a gluten-free diet, but went away completely when I discovered my other intolerances and eliminated those foods.
  10. I just want you to be aware that the testing on children that age is not very reliable. If he tests positive, it is definitely valid. But if he tests negative on either of the tests (or both) that may not mean a thing. Either way, I urge you to just put him on the gluten-free diet after testing is done, as that is the most valid test, especially for young...
  11. In Germany, Dec. 26th is a holiday. Presents are exchanged on Christmas Eve after coming home from church (around 7:00 PM). Children are allowed to stay and play with their new toys until they drop, some last until after midnight. Christmas Day is called the first Christmas Day, and you have a quiet day with only your immediate family. What is here Boxing...
  12. Good for you for going with your instincts! Too many mothers won't listen to their instincts when doctors don't agree. But we know our kids best. I am sure Owen will thank you for feeling better.
  13. You're quite welcome, it is nice to be appreciated.
  14. My oldest grandson (now 5) used to be extremely emotional. If he'd hurt himself, or you just looked at him the wrong way, he'd be crying and crying, sometimes for hours. He was also clingy and whiny. His mother thought he was a wimp and often ignored him and wouldn't comfort him. Finally, after years of this, she made her family (herself and five kids...
  15. Yes, they appear to be gluten-free. Open Original Shared Link Go down to cereals, and you'll find it.
  16. Slee, first off, the scope will be negative if your son is off gluten for several weeks beforehand. Children usually heal fast. Since gluten obviously makes him desperately ill, I see no reason for keeping him on gluten for a test, I would cancel it if I was you. If you go gluten-free now so you can breastfeed him, and you find you feel better without...
  17. There is plenty of evidence that gluten isn't good for anybody. More and more scientists are saying that about 80% of the North American population is gluten intolerant and would benefit from a gluten-free diet. That includes all the people with IBS (NOT a valid diagnosis, as an irritable bowel is a symptom, not a disease in itself), Crohn's (the gluten-free...
  18. You realize that joint pain and ADD are extremely common symptoms of gluten intolerance, right? those ADD meds are very addictive, and a gluten-free diet may just fix both the joint pain and the ADD. My five-year-old grandson had joint and muscle pain and was very emotional, until my daughter eliminated gluten. He is fine now, and is also gaining weight...
  19. Actually, the RDA from the FDA is 90 mg for males, and 75 mg for females. Not 500mg at all. Open Original Shared Link And yes, for most people 500mg a day should be enough. But, as I said, the recommended daily allowance is laughable and just enough to prevent scurvy.
  20. The problem with the 'official' daily allowance for nutrients is, that it is so low that it barely keeps you alive. For instance, I think the daily allowance for vitamin C is about 50 or 60 mg. In reality you need at least 500mg a day (more is better, like 1000 to 3000mg) to be healthy. The same is true for just about all essential nutrients. You don't want...
  21. Unfortunately, one week of gluten after being gluten-free for a while will likely result in a false negative. He would have to eat at least four slices of bread a day for three to six months minimum to maybe get accurate results. So, if he wants to get the 'official' testing done, he should keep eating his regular gluteny diet right up to taking tests...
  22. It sure sounds like your husband and daughter have at least a gluten intolerance, probably celiac disease. And yes, it is entirely possible for your husband to feel so much better after only a day on the gluten-free diet. And your daughter likely stopped eating gluten foods when little, because they made her feel bad. It is likely that her blood work...
  23. The reason shampoo might make you sick is that you may get some into your mouth. Either directly, by running into your mouth when rinsing, or indirectly, when you touch your hair and then eat without washing your hands. The same goes for soap, lotion, lipstick and lipgloss (you WILL eat some, it is inevitable) and other personal care items.
  24. You could use coconut oil (cold pressed, non-hydrogenated, which is extremely healthy) and rice milk (not rice dream, it isn't gluten-free) in your mashed potatoes. I always do, and nobody knows the difference (only my tummy does ). No, the rash doesn't have to be itchy. DH is always itchy, so that just means it isn't that.
  25. I just want to mention that gluten WILL be in your breastmilk if you eat gluten containing foods. So, if you are going to give the gluten-free diet a try for your daughter, you will have to eliminate gluten from your diet as well, if you still nurse her. Her symptoms could be caused by a combination of soy, gluten and dairy. Which is very common with celiac...
