  1. One mistake is, to start the gluten-free diet before a scope. Because by the time the scope is done, the damage to the villi could have healed, resulting in a false negative. So, if you really want to have the scope done, you need to start your son back on gluten, and not just a little bit but a substantial amount every day. If you find that he has...
  2. No, you should NEVER eat anything that has touched a wheat product. Eating the toppings off a pizza is a big no-no, as is eating salad that had croutons that have been taken off, or anything like that. In fact, if you have made a sandwich with regular bread, and don't wash your hands before making a sandwich with gluten-free bread, the supposedly gluten...
  3. Yes, the only obvious symptoms could be anemia and constipation. In fact, just anemia is enough to be tested for celiac disease! Her hemoglobin is so low, she should be getting a blood transfusion, and after that iron IVs! Her anemia is so severe that she might die if nothing is done soon. Just going on a gluten-free diet will NOT fix her anemia, it would...
  4. Well, lets just say that you are one of the lucky ones. At least the doctor isn't opposed to doing the tests you request, and doesn't claim to know everything. He doesn't know as much about celiac disease as you already do. Neither does my doctor. But she will also do the testing I want, and agrees that what I am doing is good. So many people here have...
  5. I have my doubts that anything fortified with vitamin D has D3. And D2 is not only inferior, but dangerous. Is it only the vitamin D your doctor prescribed that causes you a problem? If natural sources other than the sun are okay, cod liver oil is the best choice. Carlson's cod liver oil is the best on the market and doesn't taste gross. 400 iU may...
  6. You are not alone with this problem. Those biopsies are not all that reliable to begin with. And when you then add a doctor who doesn't seem to know what he is looking at, you have a real problem. It sounds to me like the biopsy should have confirmed the celiac disease. Are you able to get a second opinion from a real specialist? You wouldn't have to have...
  7. You say your son was slowly getting better. It is usually extremely important to also take a child off all dairy and soy in order to heal and really get better. If you haven't done that, that could be the problem. I wouldn't give up on the gluten-free diet that easily. After six months off gluten, it could take years before you would get positive test...
  8. I agree that the Aciphex could very well be the cause of a lot, if not most/all of your symptoms. It sounds like maybe gluten could be your original problem to begin with, as could dairy, soy or another food/foods you are intolerant to. I tend to get acid reflux when I eat things that don't really agree with me (like eggs or rice, I wouldn't eat gluten...
  9. You posted late last night, when most moderators are sleeping. Your topics posted, but will be at the very end of the forum until a moderator reads it, approves it and pins it. At which point it goes to the front. I have just pinned your original post, and set the second (duplicate one) to invisible for Scott (admin) to delete. The reason we do it this...
  10. Hi Cath, and welcome to this board. Unfortunately, you may be one of those people who get withdrawal symptoms when starting the gluten-free diet. Gluten is very addictive, and many people will feel like going off illegal drugs when going gluten-free. It could up to two weeks before you start feeling any better. Also, now that you are off gluten, your body...
  11. These results definitely justify eliminating all gluten and dairy (not just lactose) from his diet. If you don't, you will end up with a very ill child eventually. Obviously, he must be having symptoms, otherwise why would you have had him tested? How old is he?
  12. Yes, she is a VERY determined little girl. If she sets her mind on something she won't give up easily. Just like her mother.
  13. Eli sounds just like my granddaughter Zoey. From the time she started solids until my daughter took her off gluten and all dairy, she NEVER had a normal poop. It was always blow out diarrhea five or six times a day, going everywhere, just like Eli. Within a couple of days off gluten at the age of 15 months, she had her first normal, solid bowel movement...
  14. My nephew from Germany is visiting (yes, the same one who was here two years ago), he arrived on Monday. My daughter, her husband, their kids, my son-in-law's parents, two sisters, brother and sister-in-law are at a cottage which is only a two hour drive from us, rather than a 4 1/2 hour drive normally. So, Adrian and I went to visit them at the cottage...
  15. I know, the stupid health departments of the governments of both the USA and Canada require all public places to put bleach in their dishwater. Even our church is required to, because it kills germs. But in my opinion it is a ridiculous measure that will cause disease, rather than prevent it.
  16. Gluten is not alive. It is not a virus or bacteria. Therefore using bleach to clean things that have gluten on them is useless. Scrubbing is what gets the gluten off. Using soapy water and a scrubber will get gluten off smooth surfaces. Adding bleach to the water will have zero effect on the gluten. But it is poisonous to us. Personally, I would NEVER...
  17. Pauliina, you are right. But why would she throw up after taking them? That makes me think they may have gluten. On the other hand, maybe Canadiangirl is intolerant to corn or whatever the starch is that is in those vitamin pills?
  18. As Patti said, you can NEVER eat gluten again! Your tests are only negative now because you haven't had gluten in nine months. That is excellent. But if you eat gluten again, you'll get sick again, and may even trigger other autoimmune diseases.
  19. You are SUPPOSED to test negative for celiac disease a few months after starting the gluten-free diet! That shows you are doing a good job being gluten-free. Congratulations. Your villi are healing and you are getting well.
  20. You should also get your vitamin D tested, as well as calcium, magnesium and vitamin K. Without adequate levels of vitamin D, your body can't absorb calcium and magnesium. Your symptoms don't always show how much damage there is. I have heard of people who's only symptom was anemia and their villi were totally flat. In fact, some people who were completely...
  21. Normal is to have diarrhea once or twice a YEAR. To have it every day is extremely abnormal. And yes, some kids throw up from gluten. One of my grandsons never had a solid bowel movement until his mother took him off gluten at the age of four. Immediately his bowel movements became normal. She didn't bother with testing, but put herself and her five kids...
  22. Pectin is fine, Kellogg's Rice Krispies are not. They contain barley malt. All Kellogg's cereals contain barely malt and are not gluten-free. On the other hand, if those rice krispies are the gluten-free ones, that is different.
  23. Have you ever tested if barley and rye make you sick? It is obviously pretty simple to find out. After you feel better again, eat some rye bread (Ryvita crisp bread would be good, it is 100% rye) for a few days. If you react, you can be pretty sure it is gluten. But if you still want to try barley, drink some beer or eat soup that has barley. If you don...
  24. The ped is wrong. Children heal quickly, and it is highly unlikely that the tests would be accurate now. They are notoriously unreliable in young children to begin with, in fact. Actually, the blood tests won't be positive until the villi are in very bad shape. The antibodies are produced in the intestine, and will get into the blood only after extensive...
  25. I agree with Pauliina, that it will eventually regulate itself with healing. In the meantime, her suggestions are good. Plus, I find that prune juice is great for alleviating constipation, and is not addictive like laxatives are. Also, I need lots of protein. If I don't eat enough meat, I get constipated. Extra fiber does nothing for me when I am constipated...
