ARCHIVED At A Complete Loss For Words After Years Of Unethical Treatment By Doctors
Ursa Major replied to shawna67's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, you absolutely sound like you may have celiac disease. Why don't you just forget about all those ignorant, arrogant doctors and just simply put yourself on the gluten-free diet! If it makes you feel better, you'll have your answer. It is nobody's business than your own what you eat or don't eat, you don't need anybody's permission to eliminate gluten... -
ARCHIVED Venting....i'll Just Stop Talking To Anyone
Ursa Major replied to MELINE's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Meline, the way I see it is, that your mother intentionally poisoned you, to prove to you that gluten is not a problem. And then to have the gall to claim that your reaction to her poisoning is in in your head! If that was my mother, I'd never eat anything she cooks again. Because how can you trust her now to cook gluten-free for you? I sure wouldn't! Maybe... -
You may need to cut way down on your carbohydrates. People who are unable to lose weight are often carbohydrate intolerant, and should eat mostly meat and fat, no grains and starches at all, hardly any fruit, and just a few vegetables. Gastric bypass surgery is a terrible idea. It causes malabsorption and vitamin and mineral deficiencies. It shortens people...

ARCHIVED Eye Misalignment
Ursa Major replied to fedora's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your son's problems sound like symptoms I had at his age. Try making him gluten-free as well, to see if all those problems resolve on their own without any medical interference. What is your optometrist suggesting to do with the eyes? I think that wearing an eye patch for part of each day might fix that problem (if it isn't caused by gluten). -
Unless you have symptoms of hypo- or hyper thyroidism, or chronic fatigue which could indicate problems with your adrenal glands as well, or signs of diabetes, I see no good reason for seeing an endocrinologist.

ARCHIVED Celiac Disease Or Gluten Allergy?
Ursa Major replied to KathleenBP's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Kathleen, and welcome to this board. I agree with the previous poster, your doctor doesn't know what he is talking about. A gluten allergy would NOT cause villi damage! You need to be 100% gluten free. -
Hi everybody, in case people wonder where I've gone, I am in Ottawa with my oldest daughter and her family right now. I drove today, a 5 1/2 hour drive, got here at 5:30 PM, ate something and went with the family (parents and five kids ages 22 months to 8) to my son-in-law's baseball game (the 'high-tech league', as it is a fun thing with companies playing...

ARCHIVED Anemia And Other Deficiencies
Ursa Major replied to ShayFL's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I had a hysterectomy in 2002 to stop me having my period, because I'd have it for ten days each time, with only 2 weeks in between, and heavy bleeding (very close to hemorrhaging each time). My doctor felt that was the cause of my low ferritin. And it was, but I believe now that it was a symptom of celiac disease. Anyway, it took six months of still getting... -
ARCHIVED What Is This? Warn 0% Box Box Box Box Box
Ursa Major replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
I am glad you are not leaving over having had no warnings! It is as the others said, yesterday we couldn't get rid of an indecent spammer! As soon as I made one of his posts invisible, there would be another. The normal thing used to be that when somebody got three warnings, they would automatically be banned. But after giving him three warnings, he... -
ARCHIVED Need Diet Soda, No Aspartame
Ursa Major replied to MyMississippi's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If you are avoiding Aspartame for health reasons, you may want to do the same for Splenda, as it is no healthier than Aspartame. Tiffany's idea is best, and you know what is in it. -
ARCHIVED Ravenous At Night, Any Suggestions?
Ursa Major replied to Sunrise85's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
That looks like your diet was a little more balanced today. But do try to get some protein for every meal, it really helps to stop yourself from feeling like you are starving. Eggs for breakfast are great, and you absolutely can eat two or more a day! You will find the coconut oil in health food stores. Make very sure it is non-hydrogenated, though.... -

ARCHIVED Anemia And Other Deficiencies
Ursa Major replied to ShayFL's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Seriously, he should NOT wait until it goes to 4, that is insane! When my iron was 4 I was unable to function at all, most days I couldn't even get out of bed. It is also very bad for your heart when the iron is so low, as it needs oxygen to function. And the iron carries the oxygen through your body. You should likely get an iron injection every week... -
ARCHIVED Anemia And Other Deficiencies
Ursa Major replied to ShayFL's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Well, lets just say in my sister's case it won't be fixed until she gives up gluten or dies of cancer like our mother (I hope she'll see the light before it is too late). So, she'll have to keep getting iron shots indefinitely. But in the case of a person with celiac disease on the gluten-free diet, once the villi heal and we can absorb iron again, the... -
ARCHIVED Help With An Ingrediant
Ursa Major replied to KristaleeJane's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I believe it is MSG being sneaked in without you knowing what it is. Not a good thing to eat, but I don't think it has gluten. -
ARCHIVED Low Vitamin D
Ursa Major replied to Worriedtodeath's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Some people are fair skinned and don't really tan. I don't get brown, either, just a nice shade of beige (tan). People laugh at me when I say I have a nice tan. It is for me, but most people get much darker. Maybe she is just fair. What is her hair colour? I was strawberry blond as a child, and it has darkened to auburn. But my skin hasn't changed, I stay... -
ARCHIVED Ttg Levels
Ursa Major replied to khockman's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If the test doesn't show anything above 100, how do you know it wasn't 500 before, and now it is down to 120? You obviously only know it was over 100 and still is, but you really can't tell if there is an improvement. Your daughter seems to be doing better and is gaining weight. That sounds like the gluten-free diet is working. Does she still eat/drink... -
ARCHIVED It's Official
Ursa Major replied to bakinghomesteader's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Congratulations on your official diagnosis. Even though really, it wasn't a fabulous thing to do, to go back to eating gluten! Apparently, you have destroyed your wonderfully healed villi again. I don't think you have cancer, you have just made sure you don't absorb nutrients again, and hence the weight loss. Make sure you are awfully strict on the gluten... -
ARCHIVED Cross Contamination
Ursa Major replied to Netzel's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
For some people it would be enough if somebody just touches their food who has touched a gluten product before, to be sick for a week. For others it takes more than that. But really, even a crumb can cause horrible reactions in many people. I think that washing your hands in between touching a gluten product and eating your food should be fine. Mind... -
ARCHIVED The 'evil' Kid Next Door
Ursa Major replied to Ursa Major's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Actually, what baffles me is, that the parents are very nice, easygoing people. The only thing that bugs me about the parents is, that they will have loud parties on the weekends in the summer. But they are pleasant neighbours for the most part. If only they would do something about that awful child, and not let their horrible yappy dog out in the middle... -
ARCHIVED Low Vitamin D
Ursa Major replied to Worriedtodeath's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
No, cod liver oil will not cause diarrhea, I have been taking it daily for three years now, and so has my husband, and neither one of us gets diarrhea from it. And it is castor oil that is used to induce labour and to relieve constipation (hence it could also cause diarrhea if you take it without being constipated), not cod liver oil. -
ARCHIVED 13 Months Old, To Biopsy Or Not?
Ursa Major replied to Chelsea-A's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Just tell him that what everyone else has will make his tummy hurt, and that he can have other yummy food that will keep him well. And have him share some of his 'special' food with other kids. When they like his food, he will be happy with it, too. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Re-challenge
Ursa Major replied to RebeccaAlys's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Rebecca, and welcome to this board. Your new GI is wrong. You have your diagnosis, you know gluten makes you ill, and there is NO POINT in making you ill again, just because this doctor doesn't agree with the previous one! Constipation and intestinal pain are common celiac disease symptoms. Your new GI seems to be one of those ignorant doctors who... -
ARCHIVED Anemia And Other Deficiencies
Ursa Major replied to ShayFL's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
When I needed the iron injections, and got dreadful stomach cramps from the massive amount of iron pills I took (which did no good at all), my doctor (who obviously never ordered those injections for anybody before) was very concerned about the side effects, too. But I insisted on having them, and she gave in. I felt better instantly, and never had ANY... -
ARCHIVED The 'evil' Kid Next Door
Ursa Major replied to Ursa Major's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
She has two older siblings who are also overweight (they are nice enough, though), as is her mother. Her baby brother seems like a nice little kid, too.
