ARCHIVED Need Answers For My 3 Year Old Daughter
Ursa Major replied to ce-wyant's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If Elizabeth is on the gluten-free diet now, her biopsies will come back negative, even if it is celiac disease. Meaning, that really, if you want the biopsy, she needs to keep eating gluten until then. On the other hand, your doctor is wrong in saying that it may not be celiac disease if the bloodwork shows she does. There really are no false positives,... -
ARCHIVED I Need Help From Fellow Celiacs
Ursa Major replied to ilovechocolate's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Emily, I feel badly for you, you're in the same age range as my children. This is what comes to mind: Have you made sure that you don't use any personal care products that contain gluten, like shampoo, conditioner, lipstick, chap stick, toothpaste, soap, lotion etc.? Are your vitamins confirmed gluten-free? Vitamin E is often derived from wheat germ oil... -
A gluten challenge is, when an ignorant doctor tells somebody to try a gluten-free diet, and then orders people to go back to eating gluten, to do a biopsy (which most of the time will then be a false negative, even if the person has celiac disease), even if the response to the diet was positive. Obviously you have celiac disease, as you've had a biopsy...

ARCHIVED Pennaten Creme
Ursa Major replied to debmidge's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I went to the German Penaten website, and checked out the ingredients. Unfortunately they list something vague like 'skincaring additives' (losely translated, that's the best I can come up with that means what it says). Which could well include wheat germ oil. So, I sent them a message and asked if the creme contains wheat germ oil. I'll post their response... -
ARCHIVED 8 Months Pregnant And Having D Again
Ursa Major replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Cassidy, the diarrhea from a glutening can last as long as two weeks. So, maybe it is really still an effect of your glutening last week. Try not to worry, sometimes worrying alone (or anxiety) can cause diarrhea! I am sure your baby is fine. And your diarrhea isn't severe, and therefore won't cause dehydration. -
ARCHIVED Re: Re Diagnosed
Ursa Major replied to lorna's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It is a travesty that so many people here were diagnosed as children, and then told later they recovered from celiac disease. Only to get really ill, and developing other autoimmune conditions later on in life. On the gluten-free diet, your hair may indeed start getting thicker, I hope it works for you. Unfortunately, you can't erase the past 25 years... -
ARCHIVED Help Me With My Back Ache!
Ursa Major replied to chatycady's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My awful backaches used to not only be caused by gluten, but by dairy, rice, soy and eggs as well. As the others said, it could just be that you're too impatient, and that your backache will clear up soon. It is also possible that you need to eliminate other foods (dairy and soy are the most likely ones to be your problem, as these are most common with celiacs... -
ARCHIVED Dr Doesn't Believe Us!
Ursa Major replied to hannahsue01's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I really think you should try to stop ALL dairy. It may not just be a lactose intolerance, but a casein intolerance. As I said, a great source of healthy fat is coconut oil. Eggs are excellent, too. She may be deficient in some essential nutrients. It would be wise to have her levels of vitamin D, B12, ferritin, vitamin K, calcium and magnesium tested... -
Your problems could be a combination of things (which could potentially all be caused by a gluten intolerance). You may have celiac disease, your symptoms do fit. You also could have a casein intolerance (not just lactose, but all dairy), and you sound like you may have adrenal fatigue. If you are still eating gluten, I suggest you see your doctor and...

My first suggestion is to stay away from all grains at first. It is not a good idea (despite what seems to be a common practice) to start with cereal of any kind. Grains are hard to digest, and rice is a grain. Besides, it is not the hypoallergenic food everybody thinks it is. It will give me pretty much the same symptoms as gluten (and I am not the only...

ARCHIVED Dr Doesn't Believe Us!
Ursa Major replied to hannahsue01's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
True enough, but the doctor (if he takes the improvements on the diet seriously) can give a diagnoses of gluten intolerance, which would also be good enough for a note. If there is a note, it isn't just for school lunches, but also for consideration on things like play dough, treats the teacher gives out, keeping a child safe from cross contamination from... -
All normal detergents will make me itch so badly I will scratch myself bloody. I switched to the Lame Advertisement brand of liquid detergent and fabric softener years ago, and the itching stopped after I washed ALL of my clothing and bed linen when I switched (right, everything, it took me days). My son's itching stopped at the same time.

ARCHIVED Finally, Enterolab Results!
Ursa Major replied to The One's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am glad you finally figured it out, and are starting to feel better. That IgA is awfully high, for sure. It will take a while to get that down to normal levels, but be diligent on the gluten-free diet, and it will happen. -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease And Vitamin B Deficiency
Ursa Major replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Eagle, I think it is time to look for another MD. Obviously this one is a moron. What an insult, wanting to prove you're an alcoholic! And giving you a diagnosis of SD is saying that it's all in your head (another insult). Many of us have heard that, of course. I am glad you have a sensible naturopathic doctor. I don't know if your naturopath can order... -
ARCHIVED Overwhelmed With Gluten Free Food & Prices
Ursa Major replied to Disney323's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You know, a lot of those officially gluten-free foods are not very good for you, they are way too high in carbohydrates and sugar. I'd suggest to use those for occasional treats only. It is much healthier, and cheaper, to stick mostly with naturally gluten-free foods, like meat, vegetables, nuts and fruit. Also, if you buy gluten-free flour (or mix... -
ARCHIVED 8 Months Pregnant And Having D Again
Ursa Major replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Are you still consuming dairy? Sometimes people think they are glutening themselves, when in reality they are intolerant to dairy and/or soy as well, which can cause almost identical symptoms to gluten. Since your symptoms aren't severe, I doubt that the baby is being harmed. Try eliminating all dairy and soy (and if that doesn't make a difference, maybe... -
ARCHIVED Dr Doesn't Believe Us!
Ursa Major replied to hannahsue01's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My first advice is to switch doctors, as this one first of all doesn't know what he is talking about, dares to be threatening you, and insists on biopsies in small children, when it is common knowledge that they are just as unreliable as the blood work. The nerve of that man! I suggest finding somebody who understands that the diet trial is a valid diagnostic... -
ARCHIVED Hello All - New On The Forum
Ursa Major replied to gbrad71's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Greg and welcome to these boards. I also had the awful pains, and was on codeine 24 hours a day for years, until I figured out the celiac connection, and then my other intolerances. I don't need any painkillers now, either. I am glad you're feeling so much better. The problem with the officially gluten-free foods is, that they are very high in starch... -
ARCHIVED Urgent - Any Friends Pls Help
Ursa Major replied to gfp's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Steve, I haven't been on the computer today, just found this thread, and I am pretty upset about what's happening to you. I am afraid that your mother did do it on purpose, to prove to you that you're wrong about the 200 ppm not being safe for you. However, since you say it has bad effects on her as well, she may not be rational anyway, and as somebody said... -
ARCHIVED Poll: Were You Or Your Children Breast-fed?
Ursa Major replied to Mtndog's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If I remember correctly, my mother said once that she breastfed me for three months. -
Oh, how awful! Definitely a place to stay away from as a celiac.

ARCHIVED Help
Ursa Major replied to lovetofysh's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, and welcome to these boards. Yes, it certainly sounds like withdrawal symptoms to me. They should pass within two weeks or so, and hopefully you'll feel much better after that. Hang in there, it is bound to get better soon! -
ARCHIVED gluten-free For Month And A Half, Inconsistent Symptoms.
Ursa Major replied to Woolygimp's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Unfortunately, the answer is 'yes' to all of the above. Sorry about that, but that will leave you with an awful lot more food than I can tolerate! Try it for a month. If you feel a whole lot better, you'll soon be happy you found the culprit, and won't mind eliminating your favourite foods so much. Try dark chocolate, you might like it. -
ARCHIVED My Husband A.k.a. "turd For Brains"
Ursa Major replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Karen, you seriously need to ban all gluten flour and mixes from your house. I did a while ago. He might have to make gluten-free pancakes next time, or take his cooking elsewhere. As if you aren't sick enough already! -
ARCHIVED gluten-free For Month And A Half, Inconsistent Symptoms.
Ursa Major replied to Woolygimp's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi, and welcome to these boards. Yes, other things, especially dairy, could be causing you to feel so bad. When you described what happened after drinking milk, it is obvious that you really know that it was bad for you. As can happen with gluten, with milk you can get only neurological outward symptoms as well, rather than gastrointestinal problems...
