  1. Alison, I don't think it is entirely the teacher's fault. They are taught in teacher's college that they need to make all the students conform to the 'one and only right way', and anybody who doesn't fit the norm will fail. It's called 'outcome based education'. They state things like, "students will display whatever attitude by the end of the term to pass...
  2. Here it is right now 8:04 PM (Eastern time). I think you're six hours ahead of me, if you are in the same time zone as Germany.
  3. John got very discouraged and frustrated with school, and eventually just gave up. He is one of the smartest people I know, possibly smarter than me. But he eventually graduated from grade 12 with an average of 56% I think (six years ago). Those rigid teachers just did him in. He does not have AS, but there is no doubt in my mind that he has ADD, and...
  4. I wonder how many people with celiac disease never get really better, it that's the info they get. What garbage. And telling people they can't use buckwheat! That is the only starch I can still tolerate.
  5. I love that animal school movie! Every teacher and parent should watch that. I struggled with math (still do). I could (and still do) often reach the right conclusion, but in my own way. Unfortunately, having the right answer was never good enough, my way of coping and solving math problems my way was unacceptable. If I didn't have all the 'right' steps...
  6. Dessa, I am very sorry you lost your friend. I will pray for you.
  7. Well, I've never liked them, so this is one thing I won't miss (the same goes for Oreo cookies, always hated them ).
  8. Wow, Steve, you had quite the time in England. I am also glad that you are safely back home, and are feeling well again. And living in a different country from your mother is a good thing when she is consistently unreasonable. It is much easier to hang up the phone on somebody being abusive than walking away (I sure knew about that one when my mother was...
  9. Chad, let's just say that the 'movies in the head' thing is just ONE out of many symptoms. I have never heard of anybody with AS who didn't at least have some features of ADD, and who doesn't also have some tics. That still doesn't mean they have ADD or Tourette syndrome. When I was diagnosed with Tourettes, the psychiatrist who was evaluating me said...
  10. It is true that in order to have positive blood work, you also have to have a damaged intestine first. Meaning, that if your villi have healed in the four months gluten-free, there is no way you'd test positive on the blood work. So, doing that now is useless. If you really want to know if you have celiac disease, you could still do the test with Open...
  11. Sharon, I am sorry to say that you would have to eat a lot of gluten for a lot more than a week, more like four months, to have a chance of getting a positive blood test. You could get very ill, and possibly do yourself permanent damage doing that. Is it really worth it? If your son is confirmed celiac disease by endoscopy, and you feel better off gluten...
  12. Chrissy, the fact is, that for some reason autistic people are more prone to having a gluten intolerance than NTs (just like people with Down Syndrome are more likely to have celiac disease as well..... it's a genetic thing, obviously). Which would account for the large number of Aspies here. Therefore, any autistic people who are helped by a diet without...
  13. It is possible to have celiac disease without having the 'official' celiac disease genes. Scientists are saying that they probably haven't found all the celiac disease genes yet. If the doctor could see flattened villi with the naked eye, there is no way the biopsy could have been inconclusive. Especially with your positive blood test. Somebody doesn't...
  14. Well, my mom was severely emotionally abused as a child (her dad made it very clear that he only wanted boys and had no use for girls, and pretty much told her to stay out of his way.......she had four brothers), then, when she was a teenager, it looks like he sexually abused her (she said something to a sister-in-law once). During the war she was once...
  15. Yes, it is possible, and also perfectly safe. Because you've just lost excess fluids your body was holding onto. When I first started the gluten-free diet, I lost 20 pounds in less than a month. I used to have terribly swollen feet and legs by night, and I know my hands were swollen, too, and so was my face. Now I rarely swell. If you're going to lose...
  16. Wow, that sounds awesome! I am glad you had such a good time, and found a drink you truly enjoy.
  17. Sandy, you're right about AS women being very susceptible to being raped. It happened to me when I was about 22, and it's a miracle that I didn't get raped more often than that, as I got close many times before that. I simply can't sense danger at all. Strangely, I can for my children, but not for myself. The thing that is worse than being raped is,...
  18. Hello, and welcome to these boards. Unfortunately, I am not aware of a connection to celiac disease. But it surely can't hurt for you to try a gluten-free diet, to see if it might help. You never know, a lot of different mysterious illnesses and symptoms can be caused by celiac disease.
  19. Hi Kev, yes, this is definitely an international site, we have members from all over the world. There are others from England, too. I had the awful pains as well, especially in my legs and hands. And yes, my hands would get quite swollen. With me those problems weren't only caused by gluten, though. But I have heard of others who had the same symptoms...
  20. Happy Birthday Patti!
  21. You know, there are things I didn't find out I was doing wrong until I had my FIFTH child, so, it being your third child doesn't necessarily mean you know everything there is to know about raising children. There is scientific evidence that giving babies grains sets them up for being more susceptible to getting diabetes. Since people with celiac disease...
  22. Lisa, I hope everything goes well. I'll be praying.
  23. Now THAT is funny! It took me a long time to understand those little sayings (and somebody has to explain what they mean the first time I hear them). If somebody uses one I haven't heard before, I take it literal, and make it obvious by answering or asking something 'stupid', and my kids will groan, roll their eyes, and go, "Oh, Mom, don't you know what that...
  24. Hi Sandy, thanks for starting this thread, it is a good idea. And I hope people who can't accept us and want to change us to be more 'normal' will just ignore this thread. I sure could use a little acceptance and helpful advice on how to traverse this jungle of NTs and their strange rules, rather than the constant criticism I usually face. I am glad you...
