ARCHIVED A Little Insight From Others
Ursa Major replied to Megz's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It could be the rice cakes, for more than one reason. If you ate Quaker rice cakes, you probably got glutened. On the other hand, maybe you can't tolerate rice. Is that a possibility for you? Rice makes me just as sick as gluten, plus it makes me EXTREMELY sleepy. When I tested rice a year ago (after not eating it for four months), I went to bed at 10... -
ARCHIVED Vitamin Deficiencies?
Ursa Major replied to angel42's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Because of the celiac disease it is possible that you are very deficient in some essential nutrients. It is NOT a good idea to just take a whole bunch of stuff without knowing what you really need. I suggest being tested for deficiencies, to see what you need, if anything. The most important things to test for (because generally, those are the most likely... -
ARCHIVED Thyroid Getting Worse
Ursa Major replied to super-sally888's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Sally, I don't want you to feel ignored. I am having similar troubles, but I am still working things out with my doctors. I sent a PM to Georgie, who will have much better advice than me, and will actually know what she is talking about. I expect she'll answer soon, since she is in Australia and 13 hours ahead of my time. Meaning that it is already afternoon... -
ARCHIVED How Long On Gluten Before Testing?
Ursa Major replied to oaxacaborn's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
While that is what doctors suggest, from everything I have read, most people will test negative after only three months. And the doctors will then tell them that there is 'no way' they have celiac disease. But even going back to eating gluten for three months is a terrible idea. And as far as I am concerned, any doctor suggesting that people should... -
ARCHIVED How Long On Gluten Before Testing?
Ursa Major replied to oaxacaborn's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, and welcome to this board. Unfortunately, after being off gluten for a year, you would have to eat a lot of gluten (at least four slices of bread a day) for about six months to even have a remote chance of testing positive. For some people it would take more like a year to destroy their villi again to such an extent to be able to test positive. And... -
ARCHIVED Symptoms
Ursa Major replied to Chris E's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The inflammation of the intestine means a great deal. The villi will get flattened if inflammation has gone on for too long. An inflamed intestine without flattening could be the early stage of celiac disease. Did you have the bloodwork done? I think at this point you would do well to just try the gluten-free diet. The doctors have been messing with... -
Kathy, the forum is not a blog. Here you exchange information with other people. But you can start your own blog as well, as that feature is part of this site, too. Click on 'blogs' up above, and there will be a link where you can sign up to have your own blog. And yes, a blog is like a journal. There you can pretty much say anything you want (within board...

ARCHIVED Ferritin Levels
Ursa Major replied to Peta's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Here in Canada the normal range is from 40 to 300. And every time my ferritin would drop below 20, I'd be terribly weak and unable to do anything. Now it has gone up to 105 and I don't have to worry about it any more. -
Your doctor looks like a good one. And naturopathic doctors actually get training in nutrition, while MDs get pretty much none, and know nothing about nutrition, and how food can make you ill (or well, for that matter). My doctor didn't get enough training on salicylates and thought most herbs didn't contain a lot. That's why we tried herbals first for...

ARCHIVED Blood Test
Ursa Major replied to catrid's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, apparently your doctor is testing you for everything BUT celiac disease. In other words, your doctor is lying if she claims she is testing you for celiac disease. -
ARCHIVED What Do You All Thinnk?
Ursa Major replied to Karwei5's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Karol, I am glad you finally have an answer to Billy's problems. It's just a shame that he hasn't been on the diet all these years due to doctor's ignorance. -
ARCHIVED Ferritin Levels
Ursa Major replied to Peta's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
When my ferretin level was down to 4 a few years ago, my hemoglobin was still fairly normal (120). But I had all the signs of classic anemia anyway, which were extreme fatigue, weakness (some days my legs wouldn't hold me up, and I had to stay in bed), constant blue lips, paleness, racing heart and others I don't remember. So, you can have obvious signs of... -
ARCHIVED I've Got A Rotten Cold
Ursa Major replied to BamBam's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Neither Sudafed nor Halls cough drops will really help get rid of the cold, they just mask symptoms. Here are some suggestions to boost your immune system and speed up healing: Drink Echinacea tea, take lots of vitamin C, up your vitamin A and E, get Zinc lozenges (you can get them with vitamin C and Echinacea even, and in different flavours), they... -

Thanks, I have a Zellers right here in town, I'll check it out tomorrow. -
ARCHIVED Eye Aches Related To Gluten?
Ursa Major replied to CMCM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I used to have awful pains in my left eye. I went to eye specialists, and had brains scans as well, but nobody could ever find a thing. Since starting on the gluten-free (and a lot of other things free) diet, I haven't had those pains. And they were really bad, sharp pains, it felt like they were right in the eyeball. -

ARCHIVED Filipino Celiac
Ursa Major replied to jhun's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Are you on the gluten-free diet now? If you are, then an endoscopy and biopsy will be useless, because your villi are healing. It is very likely that you'll end up with a false negative result, and the GI telling you that you definitely don't have celiac disease, based on the 'perfect' biopsy. So, if you have been gluten-free, don't do the biopsy. Really... -
I am seeing a naturopathic doctor. Here in Canada things are even more complicated. There are naturopathic practitioners, and they can just have taken a weekend course or an online course to call themselves that. And then there are naturopathic doctors, who have had the same amount of training as an MD, from a college of naturopathic medicine. That's what...

ARCHIVED Mozart And The Whale
Ursa Major replied to 2kids4me's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I hope the film comes out around here soon, I want to see it. When I was still part of one Asperger forum (I am still a member, but have stopped participating), Jerry Newport was there, too. He was attacked a lot, because a lot of Aspies are pretty fanatical about being better than NTs (regular people), and actually believe that they are the next step up... -
ARCHIVED Is Everyone Gluten Sensitive?
Ursa Major replied to sareli's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Sarah, and welcome to this board. It sounds like you have found the answer to your family's health problems. Celiac disease/gluten intolerance is genetic. It is not unusual for one, or even both parents, and all or most of the kids to have inherited the genes for gluten intolerance. All of you are feeling better, your bodies are functioning properly... -
ARCHIVED Emergency Surgery For Total Intestinal Blockage
Ursa Major replied to ENF's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have never heard of the gluten-free diet causing that kind of problem (or any kind of intestinal problem for that matter). Even though I am generally not too fond of doctors, this time I believe what the doctor told you was the truth. That the blockage was truly caused by adhesions from former surgeries. Make sure your wife keeps being on the gluten... -
ARCHIVED Ridiculously Bloated, "stopped Up", Etc
Ursa Major replied to DownWithGluten's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you are eating white rice pasta, that could definitely make you constipated. You may want to make sure you eat enough fiber, and drink lots of water. Also, try prune juice. Another thing that could make you constipated is dairy. You might want to eliminate it for at least six months as well. IBS is not really a diagnosis. It just means that your... -
ARCHIVED Am I Missing Something?
Ursa Major replied to DownWithGluten's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Well, since it is the middle of the night, and only night owls like me are still around, it will definitely take longer than five minutes to be pinned. I'll go and check it out, and pin it for you. -
ARCHIVED Update/ To Brother In A Heap
Ursa Major replied to winki4's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I am very sorry to hear that he is so ill. You must all be very upset. And to think he is about the same age as me (I will be 54 in four months)! It freaks me out a little, I have only been gluten-free for just over a year now. I will pray for your brother and your family. -
ARCHIVED Frustrated By Friend Who's Dh Is Supposedly Celiac!vent!
Ursa Major replied to LyndaCanada's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sure, there are two schools of thought. The ignorant one, and the educated one. Apparently, hers is the ignorant one. Her husband might be just as sensitive as you, but doesn't get obvious symptoms from cross-contamination. That doesn't necessarily mean that he isn't doing damage to his intestines every time he uses the same toaster as his wife, for...
