I do not do red meat, haven't for many years because of allergic reactions to what they were fed or shot-up with. Dairy is a major family problem, so that is out. No eggs when I am depressed because they make me want to jump off a bridge. The poultry I eat has to be range free, no antibiotics, corn fed, organic. I do eat some seafood. I quit caffeine the day I went gluten-free and limit my sugar intake and chocolate. In place of dairy I do goat cheese, but not a lot.

Kraft chicen and rib bbq sauce is great.

For all the education doctors have they aren't that smart, generally speaking I would rather see a veterinarian. Listening to your body is the best idea. The tests are not that good, I had to pressure the doctor to get them to do something in two instances this year. Getting better shouldn't have to be this difficult if doctors would listen. I have been gluten-free just over a month and many people see the difference and tell me how much better I look. I also feel better and my DH is cleared up unless I get exposed to wheat/gluten. On top of that so far I have lost 23 pounds.

When I was gluten-free for two weeks people at work started telling me I looked better. I have now been gluten-free slightly over a month and I, the person who got up minimum of 6 times a night since being a child now only gets up a couple of times or not at all. Also my butt and other places used to itch like mad, especially in the middle of the night and it doesn't happen anymore unless I have been glutened. Another noticable thing is my head which itched and broke out in sores does not do that any more. I have a lot less instances of the big "d" now also.

Perhaps their problem is like so many others. Perhaps they do not think that Celiac disease is a valid life-threatening disease. There are many who just think it is some urban legend. I have talked to doctors who thought it was impossible to have hypglycemia or Celiac.

Migraines, a way of life for me. 99% of mine are due to barometric pressure changes. I live in literally the worse place on earth for anyone with migraine headaches. If I am not at work or don't have to leave the house I take Novachlorapromazine, they kill the headache in an hour but then I spend the rest of the day practically a drooling idiot.

The other problem with designer foods along with cost is a possibility of being glutened. Making it myself I know what it was near and what is in it and I won't be glutened. I accidently got glutened today because I think the last person on this desk had bread crumbs.

There is really no difference in the way you eat on gluten-free except you exclude all wheat and wheat gluten items. You can get rice noodles, make stir frys using corn starch, corn starch in gravy is good. You can still have stews and chili. If you want cereals there is envirokids which Koala crisps and Gorilla munch are gluten-free and very good and not that expensive. You can wrestle up lots of recipes that are gluten-free and if you have a bread maker you can make gluten-free bread. Which can be quite good depending on the mix or get some of the Bette Hagman's books, great recipes in there. Usually you make pastry, cookies, etc. with a mix of flours like bean, soy, potato starch, potato flour, corn starch etc. You can eat corn tortilla's. So basically it doesn't really cost a lot, just make sure you read the labels. I have emailed many companies or called their toll free numbers to get whether they contain wheat or wheat glutens.

I am angry with doctors for not listening and being so dense. I am angry for having to be sick for half my life. I wish I would have known about this so very long ago. I have adjusted well to this way of eating. Some days I think I miss pizza or I miss dumplings in Chinese food. But I have vowed to find a way to make the dumplings and samosas.
I am angry at people who don't believe what you tell them and they and doctors treat you like a dumb cluck.
I have vowed this upcoming year to get articles out that will help those with Celiac, gluten intolerance or food allergies.
I am not angry at this disease because it is the best thing that has happened to me, in it's own bizarre manner. I am angry that we have had to suffer with this for so long. I am angry that some of the foods are so expensive if one wishes to buy them, this is because it is like they are telling us that if we wish to poison ourselves then it won't cost as much. I find it amazing that foods that are bad for us and others are less expensive than good healthy food, those are the things that make me mad. This disease does not make me mad.

50% Scandinavian (Danish/Norwegian), 50% Italian.

I would agree with the others. I would say take the whole family gluten-free that way there is no possibility of cross contamination at home and chances are you have it too. You don't need to be working with gluten or having it in the air to contaminate the others and possibly yourself.

I get no popups on here, but then I run Safari. I don't get stuff like that on a Mac.

I have so far lost 20 lbs with being gluten-free in the last three weeks and this was with eating chocolate over xmas. I only gained before I was gluten-free.

I have a ton at home, I will post when I get home. One is another form of the 7 layer dip only it is baked.

Hi all.
Having a bit of a hard time at the moment with my husband.
Dx'd with celiac disease 14 months ago(he was very ill)-but was unresponsive to gluten-free diet alone and had to go on steroids.
I've read lots of people say their depressive symptoms got better on a gluten-free diet.
My husband never does things by the book-and has had a breakdown after 14 months gluten-free
It seems kind of cruel, that after being physically ill for such a long time,he was finally feeling a bit better, put some weight on etc and now has another illness we have to deal with.
His doctor has only labelled it 'clinical depression'.
However I'm concerned it may be more than that due to his behaviour.
He's extremely paranoid, and has delusions that I'm being unfaithful.
E.g-if I'm on the phone,he thinks I'm making arrangements to meet someone. He's carries my mobile with him everywhere to try and catch me out(he'll have a long wait!).Even if I wear something I haven't wore for a while-he'll read something into that.Silly things.
He says he can't even tell me all the terrible thoughts, because he knows they sound ridiculous.
At least he has insight to his obsessive thoughts about me.
I should point out we've been married nearly 20 yrs-and I've never given him cause to think I'd be unfaithful.
He also has panic attacks if I go to pick the kids up from school-pounding heart, sweating, pacing up and down.
He swings from extreme agitation to sobbing and crying all in one day.
He got himself so worked up the other day he had to be admitted to a psychiatric hosp(he hadn't slept for days)-but only stayed a day as he begged to come home.
So,-he's trying to keep himself busy, and not languish in his thoughts by doing some decorating and diy around the house.I've noticed that he seems almost manic.
Everything about him is rushed. His movements, his speech.Sometimes it difficult to converse with him as he starts to talk about all these grand plans he's gonna do the house.I can't keep up with him.I try to explain to him that we DON'T have the money to do these things(xmas and 3 kids!)but he doesn't seem to hear me.
Yesterday I got a bank statement and it's all gone-no money for xmas now,he's spent it all.I've had to cut his card up.He hasn't worked for many years due to arthritis and the problems celiac disease caused,so we don't have alot .
He's been in this 'manic state' for around 6 weeks now.I'm exhausted.
He's under a home psychiatric team, who visit him everyother day and he's on quite a cocktail of drugs:
Citalopram 20mg a day
Olanzapine(Zyprexa) 15mg aday
Lorazepam1mg up to 3 a day for anxiety.
Any thoughts?Do his symptoms sound more like bipolar?
Thanks for listening guys-I'm so stressed out!
Many normal anti depressant drugs do not work on bipolar's and can actually do more harm than good. Not only that but he does sound very bipolar. There are many different levels and types of bipolarism and he is not a rapid cycler. Rapid cyclers do not stay in manic or depressive very long and can go in and out many times a day. He is the type that will stay in depressive or manic mode for a long time. The delusions are part of the disorder and so is the spending. Many bipolars spend in their manic states or some even think they are President or whatever. Bipolar can also be a hereditary disorder. However, not all bipolars are alike, just like all Celiac's are not alike. Some are able to control themselves without the drugs because they have had to learn to due to drug allergies. However, your husband may have to be hospitalized so that they can regulate the drugs or find ones that work for him and get him under control.
It is hard on you and your family it is hard on his body but to him it is normal .It would help if they had him on drugs that would help. Many make the mistake of believing that manic means happy and laughing it usually means harder to deal with than depression. When some are in their manic states for long periods of time they are agitating to others and out of control. Do not take him off the drugs but have a serious *alone* talk with the team and tell them everything when they come.

I just got in from being in Edmonton at my brothers the last three days. W e had Chinese food from one of his favorite restaurants. When we called to order they said they could do the food with the special wheat and gluten-free Tamari. They could make pretty well every item except for the dumplings and thick noodles gluten-free. The owner said they had so many customers that were Celiac that he adjusted the recipes he could to be suited for Celiacs. They marked the ones that I couldn't eat so that there would be no problems. Pearl River is also listed on the Edmonton Celiac Association website. So, I had no problems with the food and it was great.

Actually many shampoo's, hand creams, conditoners, gels etc., have wheat or gluten in them and sometimes under a different name. We can not use any products that have wheat, gluten etc. in them because they become absorbed through the skin. There are many that do not list that they have wheat or gluten in them so, I always call the company and ask.

Congrats on the job. I take stir frys I have made. I like taking raw vegs like sugar peas and carrrots. A half hour lunch is not enough time for anything else with me, so I have raw vegs and fruits like apples, oranges, bananas. Maybe a chicken sandwich with gluten-free bread and cooked chicken breast.

I have been allergic to coloringsm, additives and perfumes for years. Which also attributes to many of my food allergies. I have not ate red meat in years mainly I don't like it but I was allergic to the color additive and the hormones in them.

Not only do some of those crazy people where shorts but you see them outside in just t-shirts. A lot of those are the teenage boys who think they show machismo running around in -40 with no clothes on to speak of. I used to tell them when I was driving the bus that ,they may think they look cool, but pneumonia is for everyone and definitely not a cool thing to have.

First of all everything you eat, drink put on your body, skin, hair has got to be gluten/wheat free. Read everylabel and I have emailed many companies. If you go gluten-free and you begin to feel better and have more energy and things change for the good then you have your answer. Some people are not Celiac but gluten intolerant, which does just as much damage as Celiac disease.
The loss of enamel is almost a dead give-away. It was my dentist who discovered mine because I lost 11 teeth in 5 years. I can empathize with doctor problems because I have had the same fight on my hands in Alberta. If I didn't have DH, they would have totally poo poo'd the idea.
You have come to the right place. There is lots of support and help on here and tons of recipes.

Most cornish game hens are stuffed with rice, let's hope they use that. I would try calling that day about 5 hours before the performance.

I am with everyone else on this. Take them to work and let everyone who can enjoy them. Thank the woman for them and say he enjoyed them and could you have the recipe so that you could practice making them yourself or would she help you make some. Don't throw away good chocolate cherries.
If work doesn't do it take it to a womans shelter or a homeless shelter.

Tina, the first week is not so bad and being gluten-free is not so bad either. I have had even great success in a few restaurants and not been glutened. I was glutened at work by someone eating on the desk and me putting my hands on it and touching my face, is an almost instant DH. I eat lots of veggies and fruit. I am probably eating more healthy now than ever before.
Bette Hagman's cook books have great recipes in them. I am also a big fan of the Enviro Kids gluten-free cereals, Celimix pancake mix and the Enviro kids snack bars. There are also good gluten-free breakfast bars.
We are all here because we all have a common problem whether we are diagnosed or not Celiac.
