ARCHIVED celiac disease And Diabetic And Lots Of Weight Gain
elye replied to sparkles's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Keep fightin' Pam! Haven't been on for a couple of days, so I just read your last post. It is terrible how we must choose which serious, chronic disease to pay the most attention to. If we ease up on the gluten restrictions, we'll end up with abdominal or intestinal cancer...if we loosen our blood glucose control, we are destined for kidney failure, blindness... -
Don't forget, some docs get a cut of the total amount of these big pharmaceutical products they prescribe. I read and hear all kinds of horror stories of patients being prescribed expensive drugs for very nebulous reasons...

ARCHIVED Autoimmunity Diseases Gluten Connection
elye replied to Claire's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
This discussion exactly addresses the crux I'm so often pondering as I make my way through this difficult eating plan (I'm also type one diabetic). I often think of how much healthier we in developed countries would be if we simply ate like cavemen...hunter-gatherers...meat, plants, nuts and seeds. We are in a place in our history, however, where it is... -
ARCHIVED celiac disease And Diabetic And Lots Of Weight Gain
elye replied to sparkles's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hey, Pam! Welcome to the celiabetic club--like my new term? I've been a type one diabetic for thirty-three years, and a diagnosed celiac for six months. The two diets are really challenging to follow at the same time, especially when, like me, you are obsessed with keeping very tight blood glucose control. Many of the carbohydrate choices in the celiac... -
ARCHIVED Sweet Breath
elye replied to prinsessa's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You can test for ketones in your urine, as I'm sure all those who have been on Atkins know. I think he requires everyone to buy the ketone-testing strips and dip them in their urine, to determine if they are in ketoacidosis (the desired condition for Atkins). This is why I have always had such a problem with the Atkins diet, at least the first two weeks... -
ARCHIVED Sweet Breath
elye replied to prinsessa's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Been type one diabetic for thirty-three years, and known celiac for six months. Yes, the two absolutely do go together, being autoimmune diseases, and hypothyroidism is very commonly a third member of this club. Dangerously high blood sugars cause ketones to form in the blood, and the condition is known as ketoacidosis. It is causes breath to smell sweet... -
I have been a type one diabetic for thirty-two years, and a diagnosed celiac for six months. Quite challenging at times! Because I've been tightly controlled for years, I am very often borderline hypoglycemic, in fact I can now function with my blood sugar at around 3 mmol. But when it dips below that, man, get me food! I have found through years of managing...

ARCHIVED One More Stupid Thing I've Done!
elye replied to Lollie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, this is great news, at least for me. As a celiac who is also type one diabetic, my food restrictions are many, and the one artificial sweetener I can use on my cereal that satisfies both diets is Sugar Twin, which is maltodextrin. So I will happily continue to use it....Yippee! Something processed and nutritionally empty and delicious that I can... -
ARCHIVED One More Stupid Thing I've Done!
elye replied to Lollie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Okay, now I'm confused...My "Canadian Celiac Association Pocket Dictionary" lists maltodextrin as "allowed", with the following info: "Product of hydrolysis of various starches such as corn, potato and rice. In North America, maltodextrins are almost always derived from corn and therefore are gluten-free. However, rarely maltodextin may be derived from... -
Hey, Guys, This thread is somewhat related to jodikris's last one...I've been "officially" celiac for about six months, and finally getting on to the challenging diet. I am getting my kids tested this month. Here's where I need your help: I've been after my brother and sister to be tested, but they keep brushing me off, not realizing how serious this...

This is indeed interesting...Finland has--by far--the highest incidence of type one diabetes per capita in the world. Another auto-immune disease that is so often associated with celiac. A few years ago, this statistic was paired with another one--the Fins also consume a lot more milk than anyone else in the world. There is now, therefore, research being...

ARCHIVED Going To Dentist, What Should I Look For.
elye replied to rlemmon's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I just wrote about this on another thread--I've got two good friends who are hygienists, and they have both told me to be aware that some manufacturers of surgical gloves package them with flour sprinkled between the stacks, I guess to keep them from sticking together. This, of course, opens up concerns in other areas, as well--gynecology for one. Yeeeeessshhh... -
Actually, yes, I have experienced shooting pains in my feet (left in particular) over the last few weeks...I'm a runner, so I was automatically attributing it to overuse and pounding. I never thought about it being related to my celiac (or anything else). Wow...anyone else?
-
This still brings us back to the flour-in-the-glove-packaging issue. I think everyone is accustomed to always checking the INGREDIENTS of materials used, but not this weird issue of dusted flour for packaging purposes. What's our world coming to? I'm with ya, floridanative, you gotta laugh your way through all this, or else madness surely lies in wait...

A GREAT question...I never took that logical step forward and considered all the other places besides our dentist's where we come in contact with surgical gloves. I have my check-up next week, and I'm sure gonna ask my GP about it. I'm SOOOOO tired of bringing all my own stuff places (food, toothpaste)...don't tell me I'm going to be bringing my own rubber...
-
Hi, NikkiLynn, I have two good friends who are dental hygienists, and they have both warned me that often surgical gloves that come into the offices are packaged with flour sprinkled between the stacks, I guess to keep them from sticking together. So if you're hyper-sensitive, you may want to ask your dentist about this.

ARCHIVED Corn As Auto Fuel Vs Gas/petrol
elye replied to debmidge's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hell, let's get the researchers going on wheat-based gasoline...We've got so much of the stinkin' stuff here in Canada, and it aint no damn good to me. I'd love to be putting it to good use--in my car's gas tank... -
Boy, I hear you on this one...bloating is the one big symptom I get from accidental glutening, to the point where I can't get my pants done up! I, too, would love any feedback on possible remedies for this--exercise doesn't do it for me; I still look quite pregnant after a post-glutening cardio session.

Protein, protein, protein! That's what keeps my hunger at bay between meals, and the plant-based sources most of all: legumes and nuts. This is an important part of a training athlete's maintenance, as well...filling the meal gaps with small shots of protein. Fills you up and provides energy for working muscles, something we all can probably use. I lost...

Hey, Patti, Thanks a lot! I apparently got the pic on my profile...just made it a little smaller like you said...so hopefully it will be on this post!
-
Thanks for your suggestions, I'm just gonna try them...I DID crop my pic quite a bit, but I'll crop it more. As for file type, it's a JPG, which is supposed to be fine, but I can change that, too...(if I can figure out how to do that...computer idiot, here...)..

Hey, you may be able to help me...I have been unsuccessfully trying to put my own picture on my profile. I keep being told that I have not been given permission (?!) by the board to enable this. Do you know what's up? My pic is not too big, and I've tried to do this under "edit avatar settings" and "change personal photo"...

Nope, my pic is only 29KB. So frustrating...I just tried it all again four times, twice by hitting "edit avatar settings", then typing in my JPG #, then hitting "update avatar"...nothing happened. Then I tried "change personal photo" and a message keeps coming up telling me that the board has not enabled me to enter this part of my controls. (??!) Anyone... -

I'm having the same problem...when I enter the jpg of the photo I want to use as my avatar, it says something about the board not enabling me to do this yet. Help! I need enabling!
