ARCHIVED Still Bloated
RiceGuy replied to Healthy Girl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
One thing that helped me is magnesium, though that's not to say bloating can't have multiple causes. It did take a long time to finally go away, so that's something to keep in mind too. -

ARCHIVED Substitution Confusion!
RiceGuy replied to mommyofceliacboys's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Yeah, I've noticed that as well. Not to go off-topic, but one way to get veggies to interest kids might be pies, like carrot pie, sweet potato pie, etc. Pumpkin is a type of winter squash, but maybe you should keep that to yourself Using Stevia instead of sugar can essentially make a pie into a nutritious treat without the guilt. Anyway, muffins... -
As I understand it (from what I've read), one of the reasons fiber helps lower cholesterol is that it helps carry out bile acids, which are released by the liver to aid in the digestion of dietary fats. And it is interesting that the liver uses cholesterol in the creation of those bile acids. Therefore, rather than the cholesterol building up, it can be lowered...

ARCHIVED Could My Mom Be Gluten Intolerant
RiceGuy replied to Terbie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It takes longer for some to notice the benefits of the gluten-free diet. I basically saw little change until about six months. Plus, since she seems to still be getting gluten, though in smaller amounts, that I'm sure will prevent full recovery. The longer a Celiac has been eating gluten, the more likely it is for severe damage, thus a longer recovery time... -

ARCHIVED Greasy Foods = Upset Stomach?
RiceGuy replied to cojaro's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree that it might be dairy, but also I know many kinnikinnick products tend to have Free Glutamic Acid (MSG). I suppose you could try having some cheese by itself to see if that's what you're reacting to. Also maybe try some of the pizza crust alone and see what happens. Besides tomatoes, what else is in the sauce? Do you have the same reaction to... -

ARCHIVED Itching Not From Dh Or Psoriasis
RiceGuy replied to mushroom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Have you looked into the possibility of a candida infection? I'd try caprylic acid capsules, and at the same time avoid all sugars, yeasts, vinegars, and fruit. What was the reason that your doctor suggested fish? Is it was for the omega-3s, you could have flax seeds, walnuts, and chia seeds. This might actually supply more O-3s, at the same time as avoiding... -
Aside from the fine suggestion given in the previous post, my thoughts are deficiencies or candida. Many have experienced twitching, restlessness, etc, because of a deficiency in one or more nutrients. I do know that magnesium and methylcobalamin (B12) are very vital to nerve health, so that's where I'd start. They certainly worked for me. However,...

Well said, and I agree. Not only is making things from scratch fun, but it can then be made far healthier than what's available on the market. For instance, I use Stevia for a sweetener. I also never liked that white "sandwich bread" stuff anyway, so whole grain bread already appeals to me. Sugar does cause a rise in cholesterol too, and from what I understand...

Well, I never touch alcohol so I can't suggest anything there (don't know what people like about it either). But I do know that apple cider gets really...how should I say...strong, if allowed to sit in the fridge too long. Maybe that would approximate something you like in the drink category. Anyway, I agree with the notion given by the other poster that...

ARCHIVED So, I Am About To Gluten Myself...
RiceGuy replied to gfjayhawk's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If I'm not mistaken, losing blood that way would make stools blackish (or maybe really dark red?), unless you're a Vulcan Maybe digestion isn't happening properly, especially is there's D. Food gets sent out before being broken down, so if you eat green veggies, well that might explain it. -

ARCHIVED Just A Wheat Allergy?
RiceGuy replied to splash's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, as you yourself have said, the tests are unreliable. Only one sure way to know, so it's up to you. Sorry, I don't know what else to suggest. -

ARCHIVED Have Gluten Free Products .. How Can I Sell Them?
RiceGuy replied to Foyle's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I believe it takes quite an investment, as you need to have a facility which is approved by a health inspector and all that. I don't know all the specifics, but here are some places to start: Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link HTH -

ARCHIVED Kelkin Gluten Free Porridge
RiceGuy replied to Katrinm's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There are very few places to get gluten-free oats in the US, because they are usually processed in the same facilities along side wheat. Also, the CODEX standard (which Europe uses for food labeling laws) allows for a certain amount of gluten, which many turn out to react to. Some Celiacs can have oats, some cannot. If you know you can without the immune... -

ARCHIVED Maltodextrin
RiceGuy replied to Katrinm's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
According the the safe foods list, maltodextrin is gluten-free. That does not mean however, that you won't have some reaction to it, depending what the source is. -

ARCHIVED Is There Gluten In Benedryl?
RiceGuy replied to Alternative mama's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Your skin reaction sounds like it may be DH (Dermatitis Herpetiformis). There's an entire forum on the board for this condition, located here: Open Original Shared Link I'd look there before trying anything. Here's a link to the FAQs on the Benadryl site, which addresses your question: Open Original Shared Link I do know that iodine can make DH worse... -

ARCHIVED Symptoms Returning?!?!
RiceGuy replied to nikky's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Just keep in mind that blood tests don't always pick up deficiencies. Many members here find great benefit from supplements even when tests say their levels are fine. -

ARCHIVED Can Tooth Decay Affect Your Mental Health?
RiceGuy replied to FlourShopGirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with the others - seems like a bad idea to have all your teeth pulled. That's really not going to help the cause at all either. There is a reason for the tooth decay. My first guess would be nutrient deficiencies. Calcium sounds like a place to start, but calcium doesn't work without other things, such as vitamin D and magnesium, just to name two... -

ARCHIVED Do You Need The Gelatin?
RiceGuy replied to celiac-mommy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've never used gelatin in my gluten-free baking, but any binder would have some influence on the texture. Agar Agar is known as a "vegetable gelatin", as it comes from seaweed. So that's what I might try if I ever find a recipe that didn't turn out right otherwise. Never had that happen yet though. I suppose it's also a matter of preference too. Some like... -

ARCHIVED Symptoms Returning?!?!
RiceGuy replied to nikky's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Like many others, it sounds like you have some nutrient deficiencies. I'd recommend magnesium and a sublingual methylcobalamin (B12) supplement. These two have proven indispensable for myself and many other members here as well. Other supplements to consider might be calcium, vitamin D, B complex, iron, zinc, and probably others I'm not thinking of. I... -

ARCHIVED Negative Ttg - What Next?
RiceGuy replied to hot-mermaid's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes - I agree with your thinking, of remaining gluten-free and feeling well. I'm sure others will say the same. I, like many here, have not sought any "official" diagnosis. Years of suffering with numerous clueless doctors tell me it would be a total waste. That's my take on it. The only thing you need to decide is which is more important: what a doctor... -

ARCHIVED B12 Supplement
RiceGuy replied to taweavmo3's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Might they have changed the formula? -

ARCHIVED 4-year-old Celiac With Reflux?
RiceGuy replied to OrchardNueve's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Well, as you know, the tests aren't very accurate for small children, so I'd recommend simply trying the diet. If it works, that's all that matters. Far better IMO than trusting inaccurate tests while your child continues suffering. You already know Celiac is in the family too. I hope your child gets well very soon! Welcome to the board! -

ARCHIVED Glutened By Bob's Mill?
RiceGuy replied to elmuyloco5's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well, then send them a message that they'll understand, like go to the manager and say you're not buying the products unless they keep them on a separate shelf. Maybe start a petition? Do they have a bulletin board in the store? Get every member of a local Celiac support group to call them? If the items don't sell, they'll stop carrying them. -

ARCHIVED Do You Think My Daughter Was Glutened?
RiceGuy replied to Hopefulmama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It doesn't sound like coincidence to me. -

ARCHIVED Help, Is My Girlfriend Having Celiac Disease
RiceGuy replied to jf.houde's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, a delayed reaction is fairly common. Also there may be a sensitivity to dairy, at least at first. Many report this too.
