  1. Cyclinglady, I am by no means offended. I realize your intention is to be helpful--as is mine. Mostly, I am exceedingly grateful for the opportunity to clarify my earlier posts. You have been very kind and very helpful to me and to others. I do my best to refrain from discussing medications as my wording defaults to that I used while discussing with other...
  2. I got my info from the Pharmacist's Letter website. They quote an article from JAMA 2002; 288: 321-3 where it is stated that estrogen replacement therapy is not approved to treat postmenopausal osteoporosis, is not a first-line agent, and should only be used in women who can't tolerate other therapies and not at high risk of cardiovascular or thromboembolytic...
  3. Karen P, just so you know, this thread is 3 1/2 years old. You might not get any responses/help. Anyway, welcome to the forum!
  4. Yikes. I certainly did not mean to imply that HRT, at any dose, is a treatment option for osteoporosis. It is not. I just happen to be one of the "lucky ones" whose menopausal symptoms are so severe that I require HRT just to live any kind of "normal" life. I've seen other Celiacs on this site say the same thing. I'm not sure what you mean by "how...
  5. Hi Plumbago, Yes I was diagnosed via bone scan. Yes, I scrutinized and researched my results. I don't see the value of a second opinion in this matter. I had my first scan in 2000 after knee surgery. At this time, my bones were superior to those of my age. I had another scan in 2008 because they were looking for the cause of my bone pain. Again...

Kim01, what a wonderful thing you are doing by giving all your love and attention to those beautiful, deserving children. It's a fantastic thing. I would argue that you also are beautiful and deserving of your love and attention. There is enough to go around. It multiplies. You mention a "we" in your household. The other half of your "we" needs to help...
  7. There is a flu vaccine now that is made without using eggs. Also, being intolerant of eggs is not the same as having an allergy (anaphylaxis). If you do a google search for egg allergy and flu shot and look on the Mayo Clinic site, they will explain all this. An allergist will know for certain how to handle your issues. I hope for everyone who...
  8. Gosh, I'm sorry you're having so much trouble. I agree that navigating the health care system can be a real nightmare. One thing that has helped me is that I check out all the docs in my area thoroughly on the internet before I even contact them. I talk to friends and neighbors for their opinions. I just keep researching as much as possible, then bite...
  9. I am not a doctor. I was recently diagnosed with osteoporosis and heavily investigated all the medications indicated for that diagnosis. I was not happy with any of them. I have chosen to opt for lots of weight-bearing exercise, good diet and a product called Bone Solid by Country Life Vitamins. It is Certified Gluten Free and covers calcium, vitamin...
  10. I have a mouthguard for night use. Purchased in last few years. It is totally gluten free. I checked with the manufacturer about all the ingredients and processes in manufacturing. No gluten. As for "dusting the inside of toothpaste tubes", I find that highly doubtful. In pharmacy school, I made all sorts of pharmaceutical items including those...
  11. No fragrance to the foundation, powder, or lipstick. I love the lipstick and I always had a hard time finding one I like prior to Celiac. Can buy online at amazon, vitacost, Gabriel site or in Whole Foods stores. At least, that's where I've seen it. There is another Certified Gluten Free line, I think it's called Afterglow. I tried it once but...
  12. I know exactly how you feel. I used to love Clinique too. Sadly, I have been so desperate to get well that I had gone without makeup for years. This may have been a mistake. There's something to be said about feeling good about how you look. I also don't see any obvious signs of gluten in these 3 items. I believe some of their items do contain gluten...
  13. Oh Erin1712, you are not alone! We have all been there. Your frustrations and sadness are completely normal. Whose life is going so well that they would welcome a major life problem like Celiac? Nobody's! It is tough and time-consuming to master the gluten free lifestyle; but you WILL be able to do it! One step at a time. Keep reading topics on...
  14. Hopefully, someone else will chime in who really knows about cover crops. I'd also be interested to hear what they know. Maybe someone can also give you tips on the IVF for a Celiac. Don't give up. Just keep trying to do your best. That's all any of us can do. ;-)
  15. Welcome! Let me begin by saying you are extremely lucky to be diagnosed so young (child-bearing age) and to not have any reaction to gluten!? Last Spring, I considered joining a CSA from a local farm. I was sold until they mentioned that the bins they distributed the produce in were rotated ( no guarantee of getting same bin returned) AND they also...
  16. Personally, I didn't get much better until I went on the SCD diet. (No gluten, grains, sugar, etc.--there are lots of etc.s!) And I recently stopped dairy again. (SCD allows some dairy.) I eat only whole food I make myself. No colorings or additives. I'm 5 1/2 years gluten free; so I'm willing to try anything to get better. If you do try SCD, read...
  17. With the holidays approaching, I feel some sadness about being deprived of the holiday foods I used to enjoy. Then I remember Sammy (not his real name). He was a four-year old patient of mine when I was working as a pediatric hospital pharmacist. Sammy used to visit me every day in my 3rd floor pharmacy satellite. He would come strolling by with his IV...
  18. You are absolutely right. I contacted my gyno a week ago & she was very HAPPY to refer me to a GI doc ( of my choice) who trained at the U. of Chicago Celiac Center! I had looked many times previously for a good GI doc; but had found no good options in my area. I am beyond excited & eager for this appt. I will be stunned if the new doc won't order...
  19. Sella, all of my personal products are gluten free. Most of them are Certified Gluten Free. The shampoo I use is by a company called EO. It is a gentle daily shampoo French Lavender for normal hair. I don't put anything else on my hair, except a tiny bit of EO unscented everyone lotion to tame the flyaway hairs. I try to use gluten free everything--to...
  20. For people reading this who are older at diagnosis (I was 60yo), even at 5 1/2 years gluten free...I still see improvement along many lines. I believe where there is life, there is hope for improvement. The improvement is slow and gradual. But it's still improvement. I plan to keep trying everything I can think of and to eventually get well. There is...
  21. Consider it a valuable lesson learned & hope you don't have to learn it again. Good luck!
  22. Welcome! I have Celiac. I also have intermittent peripheral neuropathy and rashes. Both of these rotate locations throughout my body. None of my doctors have found any cause for these; so they assume it's the Celiac (the gift that keeps on giving). My zinc level was on the lower end of normal; so he suggested trying zinc 25mg/day. It has reduced the...
  23. Sella, I never really suffered hair loss. I probably had Celiac ever since infancy & my hair was always thin and slightly sparse. After going gluten free, I was quite surprised to gain thicker hair that also advanced down my forehead, toward my face, & down the back of my neck. My ponytails became much thicker. I think I was probably gluten free...
  24. I'm so sorry you're going through this. I can definitely relate. Many, if not most, of us have been through similar experiences. Your feelings, your symptoms, your frustrations are real. Try not to "let"anyone dismiss you. You might have to change jobs so you are not in contact with gluten. Many of us had to do this. Very few doctors know much about...
  25. This did not happen to me. Sorry it happened to you. If I were in your shoes, I would retest with another GI doc as your first doc suggests. The villous atrophy can be so patchy that it's sometimes hard to find! Luckily, my doc took a lot of samples. Not all were positive.
