  1. I've been gluten free for 5 1/2 years. My hairline has advanced, seriously! I have more hair, thicker hair, including lots of hair where it never was before. My hairline has advanced toward my eyes & down my neck. Wish I had this when I was younger. Sorry that I can't help you with your hair loss issue. Maybe you could have your doctor test for nutrient...
  2. CherylS, I could have used you 15 years ago when I did become disabled due to Celiac. My doctors were no help then either. At the time, I was so busy caring for my husband who was also realizing he was disabled that I didn't have the strength to pursue my own diagnosis. I took him to Mayo Clinic for a diagnosis; but I just assumed I would get better. ...
  3. Ditto what bartfull said! I used to think it was a "pain in the neck" to eat 100% clean, avoiding restaurants--till I noticed how much better I felt and how much better my body worked. Now I think it's a real "pain in the neck" to go to more doctor appointments. Unfortunately, there is no magic bullet. I really wish there were. I'd be the first in...
  4. I believe that gluten contributed to my Graves Disease. No chance for my thyroid to recover as I no longer have one. They destroyed it with RadioActive Iodine therapy. I will need to take levothyroxine tablets for the rest of my life. I didn't have the strength to argue with the doctors as the Graves Disease made me so sick I just couldn't tolerate it...
  5. Welcome! You are right that not all Celiacs are thin. You are also right that there are doctors who know nothing about Celiac Disease. It's a wonderful thing to try to help others. However, you can only do what you can do. Sometimes the best thing you can do is to help yourself. Most of my family is also in denial. I know it's frustrating, and hard,...
  6. Personally, I think we need to pay more attention to the people who have worked in grocery stores--and BELIEVE them when they say conveyor belts are contaminated with gluten frequently--in every store that sells wheat flour! I don't understand how you think flour can be cleaned up by a simple wipe with a wet cloth!? Really? That just makes glue! Just because...
  7. Oh my God, thank you soon much for the love you offer! Your posts on this site are valuable.
  8. Wow. Just found this old topic. I think it needs to be brought up-to-date. Reading the forum these days makes me feel it's my fault if I don't get well. So many of the people posting seem to have all the answers to getting well--quickly! Not so for me. I lost my career 15 years ago due to undiagnosed Celiac. They held my position for a year. I had...
  9. I don't eat grains; but my husband loves Erewhon cereals. They provide a great base for adding fresh fruit, nuts, and your favorite milk (dairy/almond/soy). The Erewhon cereals are CERTIFIED GLUTEN FREE!
  10. You both offer valuable responses. I thank you. You are the voices of empathy and reason. After much thought, I don't really see what value the tests offer to me. I am doing the very best I can to be gluten free. I am always aware and continually tweeking. I simply cannot do any better--regardless of any test measures. I cannot live any more gluten...
  11. My internist (for over 8 years) has just refused to order the tTg and DGP for my annual follow-up. I have never had the DGP; and my tTg has never dropped below 20. He says he "never heard of the DGP and doesn't know why these tests would be recommended". I showed him a printout from the U. of Chicago Celiac Center showing these 2 tests being recommended...
  12. Bartfull, I repeat, you are very lucky! Evidently, you are one of the extreme minority of persons who doesn't ever mindlessly touch their mouth. I wish I could make the same claim. ;-) Also, you are very lucky in that you seem to always know when you are "glutened". Again, I wish I and all other Celiacs could make the same claim. If Celiacs always knew...
  13. Bartfull, I am indeed extremely happy that it works for you!! You are very lucky. However, I stand by my statement that it has been studied, and proven, that people (not necessarily you) touch their face and mouth mindlessly. And it is a fact that many nasty viruses are spread in this manner. I personally doubt that gluten can be spread as easily as these...
  14. Gabriel offers a full line of CERTIFIED GLUTEN FREE cosmetics, available at Whole Foods, Amazon, & Gabriel's website. EO offers CERTIFIED GLUTEN FREE shampoo, lotion, hand soap, & shower gel, available at Whole Foods & Vitacost.com. I cannot comprehend why anyone with Celiac would choose to risk cross-contamination when CERTIFIED GLUTEN FREE options...
  15. I can empathize with all of you. Luckily, my home and car are gluten free zones. My husband understands completely and has even gone gluten free as a sign of support. I'm amazed. NOBODY else in my life understands Celiac or gluten free no matter how many times I try to explain it. My mother and my siblings don't understand; and frankly, they don't want...
  16. Over time, you will become more accepting of yourself and your symptoms. Hopefully, others in your life will do the same. Try to be patient.
  17. Hi Jennigoose! Welome! I believe you will get better with time; as you were only 33 when diagnosed. You have gotten the best advice already. Focus on being totally gluten free. If you can, eat only whole foods you make yourself. I do have to admit that even after 5.5 years of being gluten free, I still feel worse than I did before I was diagnosed (and...
  18. Hi Brenna P., I can't wait to find out the results of your new diet restrictions & your new testing. I was not tested for SIBO. My MD thought my "pregnant belly" was evidence enough. He wrote for 3 antibiotics which gave me such bad diarrhea that he said to stop them. I thought one of the main points of the SCD diet was to fix the causes of SIBO...
  19. Hi Brenna P., During this trial, will you also omit baking with almond flour? I think that's the only thing I haven't tried giving up. In BTVC, she was so sure that baking with almond flour would become a basic part of the diet and easily digested by all. I hope you have good luck with your trial. Let me know if you're giving up almond flour too....
  20. i see that this topic is 2 years old; but for those of you who are still interested in GMO labeling, the US House of Rep. voted last week to pass the DARK (Deny Americans the Right to Know) Act. On August 5th, a petition asking the US Senate to stop the DARK ACT and JUST LABEL IT will be presented. If you want to sign the petition, you can do this on the...
  21. You make excellent points! I do understand that the 20 ppm is the max. Also, I must remind myself that "they" say a Celiac can eat 5 lbs. of 20 ppm food a day before damage is done. That is a lot of food. And...I don't eat processed food (yet) anyway. I am going to print what you wrote, Gemini, and post it on my frig to remind me to relax! You are so...
  22. Here's hoping we all get good news on future scans. I am certain that most women do benefit from bisphosphonates when taken appropriately. It's like all other prescription meds. They have to demonstrate efficacy and safety to get approved in the first place. I see there are so many options now with multiple drugs available in this class so somebody is...
  23. Great information! Yesterday, I was diagnosed with osteoporosis. My T scores aren't quite as bad as yours (sorry). I'm wondering how your experience is going with deciding which, if any, med to try? Has your focus on diet & exercise managed to keep you safe from fractures? Have you had any more scans?
  24. Gemini, thanks for this info! I wouldn't say I have a lot of fear. I'd say I have a lot of TERROR! Even with fresh produce, I scrub everything with either baking soda or vinegar & water because I'm afraid some kid grabbed it with his "cookie hands" or it got rolled in wheat flour on the checkout belt! I guess, with frozen (or anything "messed with...
  25. Thanks for offering such complete information. You have given me lots of "food for thought". ;-)
