You'll want to read Dangerous Grains and Wheat Free/Worry Free. There are some debates about books by Jax Lowell (Against the Grain) - I found it humerous and it gave me some good tips on how to deal with others - but some of the info is out of date or not correct. I am a big fan of the library - I get most of my gluten info and especially cook books there...

ARCHIVED Anti-depressants?
StrongerToday replied to StrongerToday's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks for the responses. Richard, I am so sorry - I'm glad you're doing better now. I did go the the dr., I've been dealing with this too long. He's started me on Paxil, took the first one last night. Now I'm just hoping I'm one of the lucky ones who don't feel too many side effects. I'm axious to get my anxiety over with (ha!) Thanks... -
Hello. Just wondering if anyone had advice on anti-depressants and their side effects? I went GFDF in August, and while it was not fun I did feel great. I was sleeping well, happy, making plans w/ friends etc. Ever since Thanksgiving I have not been doing great. While I fall asleep quickly, I wake around 4:30 and now am so anxious about it I can...

ARCHIVED Bar Be Que Sauce
StrongerToday replied to lizzy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Kraft will clearly label all ingredients - I just bough Honey BBQ sauce but haven't tried it yet. I've also used Annie's BBQ sauce which is clearly labeled gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED Red Bumbs On Upper Arm
StrongerToday replied to carriecraig's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I think there was something in Oprah magazine this past issue about it.... exfoliation and deep lotion helped to clear it up. -
ARCHIVED Seeing Small Improvements!
StrongerToday replied to dlp252's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Now that you mention it, I've been getting a lot of compliments on my skin "glowing" - people even asking me if I'm in love (ha!). While my skin has usually been clear and blemish free - I couldn't understand why I was getting all the "glowing" compliments. Not that I was complaining mind you -
ARCHIVED Wheat Makes Me Paranoid!
StrongerToday replied to tarnalberry's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If someone finds out - please let me know! While my mother goes to great lengths when I'm over to give me food I can eat, I am always SO paranoid!! Of course, I've seen her cut their bread and then touch my bread, dip wheat bread into the gluten-free gravy to taste test it, and make a salad w/o washing her hands from the last dish. To them it's nothing... -
ARCHIVED Antibiotics
StrongerToday replied to Jen H's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Stronger Today, I have never taken acidopholus, so I don't know much about it. How does it help the GI tract? Thanks! -
ARCHIVED Mucos In Stool
StrongerToday replied to danikali's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I noticed mine seem a bit off if I've had something greasy - chips, bacon, etc. Have you tried keeping a food log? -
ARCHIVED Undiagnosed
StrongerToday replied to Niteyx13's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My blood tests came back negative, so next I spent good out of pocket money on food sensitivity testing test - those came back practically negative as well! While part of me would like to pursue other tests I really have to stop and ask myself "why bother"? It really doesn't matter to me what the paper says... if it came back saying I had no gluten sensitivity... -
ARCHIVED Antibiotics
StrongerToday replied to Jen H's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am extremely sensitive to antibiotics! I can't take any of the penicillan related drugs - including amoxicillan and erythromician. I throw up violently. My daughter is also sensitive to amoxicillan as well. If you are taking antibiotics, be sure to eat yogurt (if you can) or take an acidophilus to help keep you GI tract happy. Good luck! -
ARCHIVED 100% Gluten Free Market Michigan
StrongerToday replied to SofiEmiMom's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
SofiEmiMom - thank you *SO MUCH* for sending this information! Several people I work with are gluten-free and were positively giddy when I forwarded the website. We're planning to road trip soon. Can you imagine a shopping trip where you don't have to read every stinking label?? Woohoo! -
Hi! I live in Ann Arbor which has some of the best medicial facilities around, here are links to the UM Hosptial and St. Joseph Hospital: Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link While I love my doctor, he doesn't know much about Celiac. I would recommend him (he's also holisitic) but it's safe to assume at this point I know more then...

ARCHIVED Could Someone Point Me In The Right Direction?
StrongerToday replied to valg's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I would recommend going to the library or bookstore and investing in some good cook books! Bette Hagman has some great ones and I just got Cooking Free which has recipes for alternatives to gluten, diary, eggs and sugar. I used to be someone who stayed out of the kitchen as much as possible - but now I only trust my own cooking... you are in control of... -
ARCHIVED Does This Sound Familiar
StrongerToday replied to Mae's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Wow - I am so blessed! I finally went to my doctor after months and months of "tummy trouble" and he said "most people w/ these symptoms are allergic to wheat and/or dairy - don't eat it for three weeks and see how you feel". I'm the one who was saying "NO - don't you want to take my gallbladder, or perform GI tests". I mean - give up wheat??? How would... -
ARCHIVED Does It Get Better?
StrongerToday replied to StrongerToday's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's funny - I was never one to cook either... but... a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do!! Do you have any good cookbooks? I search my library for them and try to make at least one new thing every week or two. A lot of these dishes I'm sure no one could tell they were GFDF either! -
ARCHIVED Salicylates Sensitivity
StrongerToday replied to Rachel--24's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Rachel - what kind of foods do you find salicylatyes in? I'm not familiar with that term. Thanks. -
ARCHIVED Does It Get Better?
StrongerToday replied to StrongerToday's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I also thought the diet was expensive at first. But that was before I started a good routine and meal planning. Before my cart was filled with frozen entrees and junk food, now I rarely leave the store with more than two or three frozen things (gotta have those Smiley Fries!!) and my cart overflows with fresh fruit, veggies and good meat. And while I do... -
ARCHIVED Christmas Food Gifts
StrongerToday replied to ryebaby0's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If it's homemade, I bring things to work for others to enjoy. But when I receive a gift basket of commercially prepared (canned, sealed products) I put them in the Food Drive bin... that way I do get some pleasure out of the gift by making sure that someone who could really use it is getting it. -
I have to admit the one thing I'd practically sell my soul for is a Pizza Hut stuffed crust pizza! I'm also dairy free right now - and the thought of trying to make a "pizza" with soy cheese-like product just isn't doing it for me! Maybe one day I'll brave real cheese on a gluten-free crust. For the hunger, another celiac disease friend recommended...

ARCHIVED What Did You Eat Today?
StrongerToday replied to CaliGirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I usually have breakfast at work - so it has to be quick and portable. I toast rice bread and top with cashew or almond butter and a little bit of jelly. (also known as a PB&J!) Lunch is usually yesterdays dinner's left overs (last night was orange/ginger pork medallions, green beans and one of my favorite little secrets - McCain Smiley Fries... love... -
ARCHIVED How May Of You
StrongerToday replied to Becky6's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My blood tests and food allergy testing all came back "perfectly fine". Yet now that I've been GFDF since August I have much more energy, am happier to be around (a direct quote from my own mother), have lost 35 pounds and am slowly inching away from taking up permanent residence near bathrooms!! Not every day is great - but I know that some day I will... -
ARCHIVED Does It Get Better?
StrongerToday replied to StrongerToday's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am so glad that this group of wonderful people exists! It's so helpful to get such gems of wisdoms from everyone.... makes me feel so much more "normal" in an other wise crazy world. Thank you! -
I have always felt loved and supported by my parents. I've often felt that I could walk in the front door and say "I'm really purple and am moving to Mars" and they'd say "how can we help?". So imagine my surprise at Thanksgiving... my mother had gone to great effort to make me stuffing, pie and other goodies (all yummy) and as she was slaving over the...
