ARCHIVED Sensitivity level means...??
pschwab posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son was diagnosed with celiac a little over a year ago. Our whole house is gluten free, and we rarely go out to eat. He is in preschool and they are very careful with him. As best I can tell he has not been glutened since he went gluten free. My question is about sensitivity levels. I read this forum often and sometimes see comments like, "I'm very sensitive... -
ARCHIVED Non-celiac siblings
pschwab replied to CeliacMommaX2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Celiac can be triggered by anything if your kiddos have the gene. We have one sibling with the gene but he hasn't developed celiac, one sibling without the gene, and one sibling (4months old) that we don't know yet. My husband has the gene but not celiac and I don't have the gene. Our home is completely gluten free. When we go out anywhere, my husband and... -
Costco has gluten free chicken nuggets that my kids adore. Costco has sabatasso frozen pizza that my kids like too. There are many snacks that are kid friendly and gluten free. If there is a Woodmans near you, they have tons of gluten free foods. My boys love Glutino White sandwich bread. Krusteaz pancake mix is kid friendly. My kids didn't like any of the...

ARCHIVED Son not understanding my diagnosis
pschwab replied to Deades's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Have him read about the disease and the multitude of repercussions that occur from gluten consumption that have nothing to do with "classic stomach" issues. Not following a strict gluten free diet can lead to terrible diseases because your body will be so weak and damaged. When my son was diagnosed, reading about the disease made a big impact on our family... -
ARCHIVED Almost 11yr old son, celiac maybe?
pschwab replied to monicameme's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Our GI dr said a strong positive blood test and positive genetic screening for celiac were sufficient to confirm celiac. So we went that route instead of the endo. Our son was 2 at time of diagnosis. I'd talk to your dr about referral to a nutritionist if possible too. We saw one and she was helpful for the initial transition. It was only a few months into... -
ARCHIVED Gluten in Plastic?!
pschwab replied to GFrapunzel's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yikes! Why would companies introduce gluten into their manufacturing process when celiac is becoming so much more well known?! Yet another thing to worry about for my son's health. -
ARCHIVED Tomato Sauces Gluten Free?

Prego traditional says gluten free on the container -
Our pediatric gi specialist and my sister-in-law's pediatric allergist said gluten definitely comes through breast milk. My nephew has a gluten allergy and she couldn't eat gluten while nursing him or he would have a reaction every time.

ARCHIVED Birthday Party CC
pschwab replied to mama.liz07's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I just use Wet Ones antibacterial wipes to wipe down the table. We keep a small soft cooler packed with wipes, the silicone mat, a mini bottle of personal ketchup, a box of chocolate milk that doesn't need to be refrigerated, crayons, etc so we can grab it on the way out the door. Then we put the mat back in the front mini pocket to be washed so the inside... -
ARCHIVED Birthday Party CC
pschwab replied to mama.liz07's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'd love to follow this thread! We have the same situation with our son. When we do dare to try eating out, we have things we try but I'm not sure they are effective enough. I wash down the table top, edge and underneath. Then we put down a silicon baking mat. We are "training" him to never touch off his mat or put any food or utensils off his mat. It's constant... -
We have been completely gluten free in our household for the past year since my two year old was diagnosed with celiac. I had a new baby two months ago. The pediatric gi dr told me to introduce gluten through breastfeeding between 4-6 months. He said this was based on a study saying introduction at this age has been shown to help stop celiac from occurring...

ARCHIVED Bruised but not broken
pschwab replied to NataliesMom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My son was two when he was diagnosed. I know there is a huge difference between sixteen months and two developmentally and growth wise, but I'll give you our experience. He was suffering from bad bowel movements daily, sporadic vomiting and complaining of stomach aches daily. After about a month I contacted his pediatrition and was told to wait and keep an... -
ARCHIVED Airheads candy
pschwab replied to pschwab's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
kareng, thank you! You have made one little guy (and his brothers) very happy. We don't allow anything in question in the house and mama bear (me) was going to trash the candy. -
ARCHIVED Airheads candy
pschwab posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My son has eaten airhead candy in the past and not shown any outward signs of being glutened (he's three so we can't always discern if he's been glutened). They are labeled as gluten free so I thought they were safe, but I just noticed the label says they are processed in a facility with wheat. We are very careful with his diet and steer clear of any questionable... -
ARCHIVED Pizza - Gluten Free
pschwab replied to KathleenH's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We are major pizza lovers, so the struggle has been real trying to find good gluten free pizza. We have tried any brand we've come across in many different stores. The best we have found is Sabatasso's from Costco. They might sell it other places as well. We buy our own toppings and make variations other than cheese. Our household has thick and thin crust... -
ARCHIVED Is it Celiac or not?
pschwab replied to Washingtonmama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Ask your son's doctor to call the gi dr for an appointment. We were told they were booked for the next couple months, and there was no way I was waiting that long. I called almost in tears to speak with our pediatrition about what to do for my son, and he called and got us an appointment for the following week. Amazing how they found that opening (eye roll... -
I think it depends on how severe the damage was. I know from reading other accounts that it can take months to "heal". My two year old had immediate improvement (like two weeks), but we were very lucky to have our pediatrition catch the celiac quickly (within two months of noticible symptoms). It sounds like you are doing an awesome job keeping him safe....

ARCHIVED Daughter's Test Results
pschwab replied to peterjohn123's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My son's symptoms were weird stool and low weight with sporadic vomiting (maybe once every three weeks). He was deficient in vitamin d and iron when the gi dr checked him. Eating gluten when you have celiac causes the villi in the intestines to flatten and not process/absorb vitamins and minerals. We had a follow up blood draw/exam after three months gluten... -
ARCHIVED Daughter's Test Results
pschwab replied to peterjohn123's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My then two year old was diagnosed with celiac a year ago. With that being said, I'm in no way an expert. His ttg level came back at 300, so we were referred to a pediatric gi specialist. Because of the high level, he was certain our son had celiac and offered the option of 1) stay on gluten until a biopsy could be done or 2) go gluten free immediately and... -
ARCHIVED Biopsy for my 3 year old Friday
pschwab replied to Sarahcatherine's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
We had almost the exact situation last April. My then two year old was having bad stomach issues, so our pediatrition ran all the tests. His ttg levels came back at 300. With such a high indicator of celiac, and the fact the gi couldn't run a biopsy for three months!, we immediately went gluten free and did genetic testing. The diet change showed an immediate... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Girl Scout Cookies
pschwab posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was wondering if anyone has tried the gluten free Trios Girl Scout Cookies? They are certified gluten free, but the oats aspect makes me a bit nervous. Has anyone had a bad reaction or tried them and not had a reaction? I'm always on the lookout for treats for my three year old that has celiac, but I never give him anything that I'm not sure of. Thanks... -
ARCHIVED Newly diagnosed/ Preschool teacher
pschwab replied to celichris's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I can approach the preschool topic from a parent side and high school teacher side. I don't personally have celiac but my three year old does. He attends a preschool part time. I know many of their snacks are full of gluten (we send alternates); could you wear gloves while helping with snack and cleaning up? We also provide gluten free play doh, oats, etc... -
ARCHIVED Gestational diabetes link to celiacs disease in children
pschwab replied to Manda7891's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My three year old has celiac, and I did not have gestational diabetes with him. I'm not an expert by any means, but I've never heard of that connection. I have heard of a connection with type 1 juvenile diabetes though. -
ARCHIVED Lesbian, celiac and coping
pschwab replied to Celialez's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree that your significant other should support you or maybe you should move on. I know it's hard to make one lifestyle change (going completely gluten free) without having to make another (ending a relationship/trying to find a new significant other). Our situation is a bit different. A family of five with the two year old diagnosed with celiac. Our whole...- 4 replies
