  1. Your friends and relatives have given you a bum steer. What led to your celiac diagnosis? What symptoms were you having? Yes, it is all very overwhelming at first. It demands that you scrutinize everything you eat and become an inveterate label reader. It also has social implications and not everyone in your circle of friends and family will accept this...
  2. Welcome to the forum, Senior 70 Green Bay WI! I am also 71 and was diagnosed over 20 years ago. In my experience, local celiac support groups come and go. So, if the info you have found on a local one where you live is 10 years old I would not have a lot of faith that it still is operative. The one I was involved with in Olympia, WA was about 30 minutes...
  3. Since you use the term "mum" I would assume you are in the UK. It is unfortunate that only the total IGA and the tTG-IGA were run as there are other celiac disease tests that can be run. About 20% of people with white European descent who do have celiac disease will test negative on the tTG-IGA as will 80% of those with black African descent. A full celiac...
  4. Welcome to the forum, Lil rory! Do you have the actual tTG-IGA score and the reference range used by the lab? Were any other antibody tests for celiac disease run besides the tTG-IGA? There are some foods, some medications and some diseases that can mimic celiac disease but this is not common. Yes, you would do well to be checked for other autoimmune...
  5. I don't think there is gluten in Coca-cola. Was it diet coke or regular with all that sugar?
  6. Welcome to the forum, Eleigh123. Actually, the endoscopy with biopsy is considered to be the gold standard of celiac diagnosis. However, we do get reports from forum participants occasionally where the antibody testing was positive but the endoscopy/biopsy was negative. This can happen for several reasons: 1. The gluten free diet was begun after...
  7. I can't say but since you are already scheduled for the endoscopy/biopsy you might as well go forward with it. It's a little late to cancel I would think. And maybe the countrified old saying is true: "You gotta dance with whom you brung." Whatever the condition of your villous lining is, you're bringing it to the dance today.
  8. Welcome to the forum, suisuisui! Were you eating gluten free prior to the holiday binge? In my mind that is a more important question than have you eaten enough gluten since terminating the holiday binge. The Mayo Clinic guidelines for a pretest gluten challenge are the daily consumption of two slices of wheat bread (or the gluten equivalent) for...
  9. This is true. How confident are you that you have achieved a truly gluten free state? "I have already taken steps to remove gluten" sounds like it is a work in progress.
  10. Welcome to the forum, Merry Berry! Have you been officially diagnosed with celiac disease or even been tested for it? The reason I ask is that DH is a classic manifestation of celiac disease and there is no other known cause for it. Have you had antibody testing done for celiac disease or an endoscopy with biopsy to examine the damage done to the small...
  11. It is true that pressure cooking disables lectins in beans and veggies, as does soaking in water and normal cooking, but probably to a lesser extent than pressure cooking. However, there is no good scientific evidence for the blood type diet: https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/the-blood-type-diet-review Studies purporting to link blood types to...
  12. So, you had the biopsy repeated and are now waiting on the microscopic lab report but the one who did the scoping reported that nothing looked abnormal to the naked eye? Is this correct?
  13. I added to my last post while you were typing. Please go back and read it.
  14. How long were you eating gluten before the gastroscopy? Being gluten free for a period of time and then eating one gluten meal immediately before the procedure will not give valid results for the biopsy. You would have needed to be eating regular amounts of gluten for at least 6-8 weeks beforehand. And with three different positives from your blood antibody...
  15. GERD is Commonly called "heart burn" but it's chronic instead of occasional.
  16. Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease
  17. Going gluten free with vitamin and mineral supplementation is certainly a logical option if you don't need the government subsidies to offset the cost of gluten-free food that an official diagnosis qualifies you for . . . and as long as you are a disciplined person. Many find that they need the psychological fortification in order not to rationalize and cheat...
  18. In any recent blood work you have had done did they check for albumin and total protein levels?
  19. The Mayo Clinic guidelines for the pretest gluten challenge is the daily consumption of 2 slices of wheat bread (or the gluten equivalent) for two weeks leading up to the endoscopsy/biopsy. So, maybe you could tolerate that much gluten for that long and not have to torture yourself the whole time while you are waiting.
  20. Thanks for catching that typo, WW.
  21. No! If you intend to get a biopsy, do not start the gluten-free diet immediately. She gave you a bum steer. Most doctors are woefully behind the knowledge curve when it comes to gluten disorders. Think about it. What if substantial healing occurs in the small bowel lining between now and the biopsy because you start the diet now such that you are put in the...
  22. Welcome to the forum, Jackland79! First, there is no doubt in my mind that you have celiac disease with the numbers for those two antibody tests. Please realize that if you go gluten free for three months until the endoscopy/biopsy there may be considerable healing of the small bowel villi and there is a strong risk of invalidating the test results....
  23. knitty kitty lives in the U.S.. When she checks the price from the U.S., she gets a different shipping rate than you do and therefore a different price. Just be cause the website (walmart.ca.com) is Canadian-based doesn't mean the product referenced is shipping from Canada. That's my theory.
