  1. The constipation cycle along with the explosive poops sounds like my son Jacob as well. He was diagnosed at 4 and is now going on 7 in November. He has adjusted well to the diet. As difficult as it seems in the beginning, I promise it will feel like second nature in a very short time. And the best part is to see the results. My son used to shake, scream...
  2. I'm thinking the same thing. We don't use Lactaid often for my son as I pretty much keep him dairy free but sometimes we do use it. For cheese you can us the Veggie Cheeses because they are lactose free.
  3. Does anyone have their kids on perscription vitamins with flouride? I am not sure if doctors do this everywhere or just where there is no flouride in the drinking water. Anyway, I just got a new perscription for my son and it seems that the company that makes them is in Iceland. I tried calling and got no where so I e mailed them and got no response. ...
  4. I don't think it is uncommon for a celiac to feel the reaction for a couple of days after ingesting gluten. I know when my son gets glutened he can be sick for 2-3 days afterwards. So don't automatically assume you are doing something wrong, it could just be the cake. I bet he won't do that again for a long time.
  5. Hi, my son and my father both have celiac so it leaves to reason that I carry the gene. Because I cook gluten free for breakfast and dinner for my family I consider myself to be gluten light. A little over a year ago I started getting really bad stomach aches with terrible gas and bloating in the afternoon pretty much every day. For breakfast I usually...
  6. Hi, isn't it funny how we look back on our old loves and remember all of the good times? And some days, when things are really bad, you really do miss those good times. But, and this is a big but, we all broke up for a reason. And we chose our spouses for a reason as well. No matter who you married, it is a tough haul sometimes. Sometimes having contact...
  7. I would recommend trying the gluten free diet for longer than a week. Sometimes it takes a few weeks to see any improvement and than a couple of months to see total improvement.
  8. Has anyone on this forum ever had trouble getting insurance due to Celiac Disease? I have heard it brought up several times in different thread and it is something I had never thought of. I know with my own pre-existing condition which is a cancer causing illness, I never had any trouble. Just curious what my son may be up against.
  9. Hi, I just wanted to remind you that if you want a medical diangosis you can not change his diet yet. You have to wait until after all the testing. My son is now 6 but was 4 when he was diagnosed. Here are some of the things he likes to eat. He is also dairy free. Breakfast: Van's waffles Kinnickinnicks blueberry muffins eggs with Ener-g foods...
  10. Hi, Celiac DOES NOT have to come from both parents. You only have to have 1 gene, coming from 1 parent, to have it. Some people do get blessed with 2 though. And the parent does not have to have disease too, my son has it and we do not. I assume I am the one carrying the gene because my father has the disease too as well as my aunt and then some distant...
  11. Hi, it is very common for young children to test negative falsely on the bloodwork. Also, with the gene test, 95% of Celiacs carry either the DQ2 or the DQ8 gene. That does not account for the other 5%. And yes, it could be a gluten intolerance or wheat allergy as well but I don't know if there would be intestinal damage with those. You could always remove...
  12. Hi, I am also a kindergarten teacher and the mother of a celiac son. I can understand both sides as my son will be eating lunch in school this year for the first time. The mom part of me wants them to make it easier for me to send in warm lunches and have them heat up his food. But the teacher side of me knows differently. My students too eat lunch in...
  13. Hi, unless the fries had cc issues they should not be a problem, Wendy's is usually safe. My nephew does not have Celiac went through an issue this past school year (first grade) in which when ever he felt he had enough of being there, he went to the nurse. Now he does not have celiac to play up be he certainly has the sweet factor going on and everyone...
  14. We did do the biopsy for my son but at the time I was uneducated about this and just followed the doctors say. I now believe it is not necessary to prove to myself it is Celiac. But on that same note, some doctors won't give a diagnosis without it (would yours be willing too?). My only concern would be if you eventually wanted to get a 504 plan for school...
  15. Do you find them in the regular grocery store or at places like Whole Foods? We never heard of them but are always looking for cracker options.
  16. My son had huge constipation problems before going gluten free. He was then put on Miralax also and it worked most of the time but we were still going through cycles of constipation. At really bad times the doctor allowed me to add childrens senacot which is a natural laxative but not for long term use. I believe any with sena in it is ok but again, check...
  17. Hi, like your daughter, my son's blood was positive too. The gastro said he was extremely certain it was celiac because his levels were through the rough and my father has it as well. He was treating the biopsy as a confirmation. It came back negative. The doctor was shocked but instead of just believing it he sent the biopsy (the same one not a new one...
  18. I am so sorry that you are scared. and that your son is sick. I can't offer any advice except to just hang in there, this too will pass. Nicole
  19. we buy Thumann's because they have a gluten free list and I called them to confirm that the ham and bologna is also dairy free as well.
  20. I was in the same boat as you 2 years ago. I couldn't understand how any doctor would think it was "just constipation". My son, as I am sure yours as well, was in terrible pain trying to go. And he too was shown to be full of poop on x ray. I would try to explain to them that when he does poop it wasn't even hard, he was struggling to poop soft poop...
  21. Hi, my son's toe nails seem to split and once in a while his finger nails. I don't know if it is Celiac related or not, maybe it is because of the vitamin deficiencies (sp). He was also constipated since birth with the bloated stomach. He has been through a sigmoidoscopy, endoscopy, and 2 colonoscopies. He also had a barium enima done also looking for...
  22. I just received a flyer in the mail that the Celiac Desease Center at Columbia University will be having a "Celiac disease Center's Family Screening & The Colin Leslie Walk for Celiac Disease" on Sunday, Oct. 10 at Rye High School in NY. It sounds like they will be providing workshops, cooking demos, gluten-free vendors fair, and I believe screening...
  23. Hi, what if you are sending in something warm, like chicken nuggets. Do they stay warm? Nicole
  24. This is how I have understood it as well. They are legally allowed to call it gluten free so they do. And the law only requires them to inform us of the 8 major allergens and barely is not one of them. I wonder what else I am feeding by celiac son that has hidden gluten in it. Nicole
  25. [ And yes, one of the genes for type 1 diabetes is one of the main genes for Celiac Disease (HLA-DQ2). And good luck!
