ARCHIVED May My Son Have Celiac Disease?
Nic replied to angayla17's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The symptoms sound like they could be from Celiac. Has he been tested? The negative wheat allergy doesn't matter as Celiac is not an allergy. My son was also negative for all food allergies but has Celiac and cannot tolerate milk. If he has been tested and comes up negative you could just try the diet. Nicole -
I have allowed my son to play in these places. Providing everyone is following the rules, no food should be in the actually play equipment so the only risk is if someone with gluteny hands touches what your child touches first but that would go with anything. The same would apply to kids at a play ground. How many times do you see children eating snacks...

When I feel like dealing with Trader Joes on a weekend (ours is always packed) I prefer their rice pasta. But we usually use Tinkyada pasta. I have noticed the slimy thing but I think that is when I don't use enough water but if you rinse it with cool water like it says to, it is ok. Also, I always take 2 minutes off of the time and the texture comes out...

ARCHIVED Still Trying To Determine If 2yr Old Has Celiac Disease?
Nic replied to sadiesmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
And one of the best things about starting this diet so young is that as they get older, the diet becomes second hand and they don't ask for gluten foods. My son started the diet at 4 years and he is now 6. He just accepts the diet now for what it is with no questions. As a matter of fact, he questions me with , "is this gluten free?" when I give him something... -
ARCHIVED Home Ec/cooking In School
Nic replied to Juliebove's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I acutally went to school in the district my children attend now. Back when I was in Junior High it was mandatory that all students, both boys and girls, take home ec and wood shop during alternating marking periods. I have not thought of this yet as my celiac son is only entering first grade but it does make me worry now that it has been brought up. Unless... -
ARCHIVED Behavior Changes With Dairy Intolerance?
Nic replied to Nic's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thanks, this sounds just like this little boy. He was actually evaluated by the child study team this past school year in kindergarten and his mom was told either let us classify him or we will recommend retention. This was in a Catholic school but he will be going to public school for 1st grade. After going through all I have with my own son I have been... -
Why would drinking skim milk successfully mean it is lactose, is there no casein or whey in skim milk? My son is dairy intolerant and we are trying to figure out now if it is simply lactose or is it casein. Any new info. is helpful. Nicole

ARCHIVED Behavior Changes With Dairy Intolerance?
Nic posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, my son is both Celiac and dairy intolerant but my friend has a 5 year old who was just diagnosed with dairy intolerance. With my own son I would notice hyper activity when glutened or sick from milk but my friends son seems to have brain fog. The teachers complain that he is unmotivated and "doesn't seem to want to be here" and is in "a world of his... -
ARCHIVED Emmah Saw Her Dr This Week
Nic replied to vampella's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
For us the testing inaccuracy went the other way. My son's TTG was very high and the doctor was sure the biopsy would confirm Celiac but when he biopsied he sent it to the regular lab that my insurance covers and they said it was negative for Celiac. Thank God my gastro didn't think this was possible and then had it sent to Columbia University in NYC (which... -
ARCHIVED New And Need Help
Nic replied to JenniferLeeds's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, he is only starting 1st grade this September and our district has half day kindergarten. So this will be my first time packing a lunch too. I plan to try to send the things he already eats for lunch and just try to keep them warm some how. I have been planning on using a thermos for the things that can fit inside one. I am still unsure on how to keep... -
ARCHIVED New And Need Help
Nic replied to JenniferLeeds's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, my Celiac son is also 6 but was diagnosed at 4 years and my non Celiac son is 5 and also has sensory issues due to developmental delays. So I can relate, here is a list of what we eat: Breakfast: Kinnickinick blueberry muffins Vann's waffles Kinnickinick pancakes mix made into mini pancakes or regular french toast using Ener-g foods tapioca light... -
ARCHIVED Financial Assistance For Low Income Families?
Nic replied to hornbeck0920's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was in a Shoprite yesterday (just by chance, I don't shop there) and I was shocked to see they have an entire gluten free section in there "specialty foods" area. It was tremendous for a regular grocery store. They had all the varieties of Tinkyada pasta as well as some other brands I don't remember including lasagna noodles. They had all of the Envirokids... -
ARCHIVED So Confused!
Nic replied to lob6796's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This was actually discussed in a previous thread not too long ago. Someone said that they had contacted Rice Dreams and they said that the rice milk would soon be labeled as gluten free. So far all the boxes at where I shop still say it contain 0.02% barley. Maybe the newer boxes will be concidered gluten free and they just haven't updated their website... -
ARCHIVED Need Some Advice
Nic replied to ckmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It's funny because we actually have the opposite problem. My son won't admit when something hurts. So we never know for sure when he is sick or when he is feeling better. But Carla's idea sounds like a good one. Nicole -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Pantry
Nic replied to angel-jd1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My A&P has started carrying the Gluten Free Pantry's brownies, muffins, and chocolate cake mix. I believe they even carry a yellow cake (old fashion cake mix?). They are also carrying the Mi-del cookies now. This was all a new development after they renovated the store. I commented to the manager about how happy I was to see glutenf free food as it... -
ARCHIVED Question About Vaccinations
Nic replied to gfgypsyqueen's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
This is interesting because 5 years ago my friend, who was about 28, was told after she gave birth by c section that she was no longer immuned and needed to be re-vaccinated with MMR. Seven months later, I was in the same situation and in the same hospital and was told the same thing. In between my sister gave birth in this hospital and was not told this... -
ARCHIVED Question About Vaccinations
Nic replied to gfgypsyqueen's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would probably ask the pediatrician for his thoughts. It wouldn't hurt to call ahead and explain your concerns. My doctor would never vaccinate while sick with a virus or bacterial infection but my son was sick most of his life with Celiac before he was diagnosed at 4 and he was vaccinated throughout that time. No one seemed concerned about it. I would... -
ARCHIVED 3 Year Old Negative Blood Tests, Positive Enterolab: Need Advice
Nic replied to arlingtonmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, I just wanted to mention that my son tested a high positive through the blood work and the doctor was concidering the biopsy to be a confirmation but when he got the results, they were negative. Because there was such a contradiction between the blood and biopsy, the doctor had more blood drawn and sent that to Prometheus labs in California and the biopsy... -
Hi, at Cheeseburger in Paradise you would have to bring your own bun, my son eats the burger on a plate, never ate a bun even before Celiac. The baked potato was on the Outback menu when we went but he is picky and won't eat a baked potato. Says he doesn't like it even though he never had it. Anyway, now that he is dairy free too he certainly wouldn't...

Hi, if you look on their web site they have an allergen chart and next to each food item, it is marked off which foods contain which allergens. The hamburgers and cheeseburges will show they have wheat because of the bun but if you order them without the bun they are gluten free (with the exception of the possibility of cross contamination). The fries are...

ARCHIVED Infants, Children And Standard Celiac Tests
Nic replied to EmmaQ's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm sure everyone here can understand how you feel. I couldn't even imagine having to make my son as sick as he was before going gluten-free/CF. Why does your husband want the positive diagnosis? If it is for school reasons is there any way your pediatrician would just put on the medical forms for school that your child needs a gluten free diet? I know... -
ARCHIVED How Long Until They Feel Better?
Nic replied to NewGFMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My Celiac son was diagnosed 2 years ago at 4 years of age and we saw some improvement within the first couple of weeks. But over the past 2 years the symptoms came back and actually worsened this past winter and finally a doctor said to take him off dairy. Up until then our previous doctor swore to me that he symptoms weren't consistant with dairy. Days... -
Hi, my family ate at the Sringfield Outback once and it is my 6 year old son with Celiac. They were very accomodating and my son did not get sick. We have not gone back because he is now dairy free as well and the mashed potatos are now out as are the fries because they don't have a dedicated frier so I don't know what he would eat with his meal. But it...

ARCHIVED Infants, Children And Standard Celiac Tests
Nic replied to EmmaQ's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son tested positive through blood and biopsy at 4 years of age. My younger son was going through some problems at around the same age and the blood kept coming back negative. So I bought the Enterolab gene test kit and he does not carry the Celiac Gene. Nicole -
I called the Ihop in Union, NJ and they said the corn pancakes are gluten free. But I am sure they are not dairy free, I forgot to ask about that. Nicole
