ARCHIVED Just Curious...
Nic replied to sarahelizabeth's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son was 4 when diagnosed. He projectile vomited through infancy, became constipated by 1 year and it escalated from there. At 4 could not poop at all and would be on the floor shaking and screaming for us to help him. They only ran the Celiac test after I mentioned my father had it too. I didn't think it was relavent because I knew my father had chronic... -
He eats more vegetables than fruit but I give him Yummi Bear Fiber everyday. I don't believe he is dairy intolerant but I don't know for sure. I just paged the gastro. because he has been in horrible pain all day. The doctor said to try a Ducolax Suppository (sp?) and if it does not work and he does not feel any better than I should take him to the ER...

I also read yesterday that people with chronic fissures would display the symptoms he his showing. It said the the procedure to fix that would be fairly simple as well. I hope it is something that simple. I feel as though the worst case would be that they find nothing and he has to come home like this with no hope of a solution. I feel like telling them...

ARCHIVED Going Crazy Or Just A Concerned Parent
Nic replied to JennyC's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You are not crazy, I also worry about cross contamination when my son eats out. After 2 years on this diet I have learned who I can trust to cook for him based on their understanding of the diet and of cross contamination. My sister takes care of him throughout the day as he is in a 1/2 day kindergarten and she makes lunch for him everyday. She is fully... -
ARCHIVED Update On My 4-yr Old: Ttg Results
Nic replied to pitnlala's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think it will depend on the doctor. Alot of us feel the blood is enough but others still rely on the biopsy. My son's ped. gastro. said that some labs have not quite mastered these tests and the numbers come up too high inaccurately. Three months aftter diagnosis my son's numbers were still way high and the doc. said that while they would still be somewhat... -
I have been giving the whole dairy versus IBS some thought. And after reviewing in my mind (over and over of course) what brought us to this point, here are my thoughts. Whatever is causing the attacks, this seems to be different. When he had that heavy bleeding about a month ago he was not constipated. He pooped normally that day, it was not hard, there...

ARCHIVED Gene Tests In
Nic replied to Annie/NM's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have two sons and my oldest has Celiac and my youngest doesn't have the Celiac gene at all so I don't see any reason for him to be completely gluten free. My oldest was diagnosed at 4 years old and from that point on he understood that his body is confused and thinks that gluten is a poison. He knows what kinds of food gluten is in and therefore never... -
Ursa, He does eat dairy. He had a RAST test last summer and he came back negative for other food allergies. Would it have shown up in that test? Also, it seems as though we have two seperate issues going on. Without getting too graphic, he does have the occassional constipation where it seems as though his bowels are slowing down for a few days and...

He actually does have Celiac. He was diagnosed 2 years ago and has been gluten free since. They ran another panel about 6 months ago to make sure the antibodies were not elevated and he now comes up ok. They originally thought his constipation was caused by the Celiac and that it has persisted for so long because he has gotten in the habit of withholding...

We went to the ped. GI today. And I explained to him that Jacob, now 6, goes through monthly attacks of pain and the urge to poop when he doesn't really have to. After a much more detailed description of symptoms he said that he believes Jacob has IBS and all the rectal discomfort is due to an over sensitive rectum (just what the poor kid needs). Anyway...

ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed With Celiac And Throwing A B-day Party
Nic replied to swinkler's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs

ARCHIVED Just Found Out My 3 Yr Old Has Celiac. I Need Advice!
Nic replied to JennyC's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Frosted Flakes are not gluten free. Just because a child does not react to the malt does not mean they should eat it. Malt is forbidden for Celiacs and any cereal with it should not be eaten. I know it is frustrating, you find a cereal that the ingredients look ok and you are half way through the list and you see "malt extract". That means your child... -
ARCHIVED Should I Do A Gluten Challenge?
Nic posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My father was diagnosed with Celiac 7 years ago. My aunt and several cousins as well. My son was diagnosed 2 years ago at the age of 4. He carries the HLA DQ2 gene which leaves me to assume I am carrying it too (I have never been genetically tested, I only assume because if my father has it and my son, I must have the gene as well). Anyway, I was getting... -
ARCHIVED Overaeacting
Nic replied to Nikki2003's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
For the first year my after my son was diagnosed he was like an eating machine. We used to call it the feeding frenzy. He would go from one thing to the next. We thought he just liked junk so we limited him to healthy foods only (yogurt, fruit, etc.) but he ate that the same way. I think his body was just catching up. Now, 2 years after diagnosis, he... -
I am sorry I cannot offer any help but I just wanted to let you know that we have a blood with the poop problem with my son. His problem is not from the intolerance it is from anal fissures (tears int he anus). Either way, blood in the poop is very disconcerning and alarming and I hope you resolve the problem quickly. ARCHIVED My Son Has Given Up Breakfast
Nic replied to missy'smom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My 4 year old (who is not the Celiac) hates breakfast. Pretty much all he ever is willing to eat for breakfast is fruit. Sometimes it will be a banana or sometimes strawberries. It used to really upset me but what can you do? Some people just don't feel hungry in the morning. He went through a time period where he wanted raw peppers (of course the yellow... -
ARCHIVED Cornstarch With Wheat In It
Nic replied to floridanative's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
We went out to eat a while back at a Chinese place and I asked if they could bread chicken for my son with corn starch. They said no because it is contaminated with wheat. I just assumed that they were talking about their own personal supply, not corn starch as a whole. Nicole -
I recently requested that my doctor give me copies of my son's lab reports from when he was diagnosed 2 years ago. I thought I should have them on record. His biopsy was positive. He was also positive for HLA DQ2 and the rest was as follows: AGA IgG 15.6 Normal being <10 AGA IgA 1.1 <5 TTG IgA ...

I asked this question to an accountant last tax season. He said that his wife has Celiac as well and that he investigated this and that you cannot claim the food as a detuctable. I think he said you would have to have a perscription for something to be claimable. We live in Jersey. I wonder if the reason is that people can eat naturally gluten free foods...

Does anyone know if chapstick is gluten free? I looked on line at the ingredients and I don't see anything but most of it was things I could not pronounce anyway. Nicole

Hi, I never heard of using epsom salt for this purpose but am willing to try anything. He did eventually poop yesterday which was day 8 of this cycle. But this morning felt he needed to go after breakfast and sat twice but could not go again. I don't understand this at all. It does not make sense that we are always going around with this. I understand...

As I posted earlier this week, my son (6) is back in the throws of a very bad constipation. Since his diagnosis 2 years ago we have had plenty of bouts to constipation but this one strongly resembles what he was like pre-diagnosis. He has not really pooped in about 6 days. He will be fine for a while and then all of a sudden running to the bathroom screaming...

ARCHIVED Son May Have Been Glutened
Nic replied to Nic's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, he is on Miralax everyday. 17 grams a day to be exact. He was doing well but over the past month he got hit first with a stomach bug and then with a supper bad cold which both left him eating and drinking very little. At first I thought he got backed up from having been sick and not drinking enough but now that he looks so bad I wonder if it is gluten... -
ARCHIVED Son May Have Been Glutened
Nic posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, I believe my son has been glutened because while we still do occassionaly have constipation, he is currently in a constipation "episode" that strongly resembles our bad days. He is in tremendous discomfort both in his stomach and his "butt". Yesterday he spent 3 hours in the morning trying to poop (in one shot, never got up). He has dark circles and...
