Hi, this may not be helpful at all but my friend has a yeast problem (a non Celiac) and was told to avoid sugars as yeast feeds off of sugar. Like I said, this might be useless information but I thought I would pass it on.

ARCHIVED Just Need To Get This Out......
Nic replied to confused's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I agree that maybe it is time for making the whole house gluten free at least until he gets a handle on this. This way you will at least be sure he is not cheating at home. If you find out he is cheating when he is out then maybe he gets grounded each time and eventually he will be tired of not going out and possibly give in to the gluten free diet. I... -
Since my son was diagnosed we had tried to go back to the Rain Forest Cafe only once. We were told by the manager that there was simply nothing there for him to eat except for grilled chicken and I don't know how many little boys would want to eat just a piece of grilled chicken. So I figured I would try to investigate farther by e-mailing them and asking...

Can someone please explain the benefits of a 504 for a Celiac child as opposed to just having it on record that the child is a Celiac and requires a special diet? I don't have a good understanding of what a 504 is. Thanks. Nicole

ARCHIVED Update On Timothy
Nic replied to VydorScope's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, I am so happy for your son that he is doing better. I can't help to now feel worried about what if the doctors are wrong, are we doing this for nothing. My son didn't see huge improvement until he was off of milk and his first biopsy came back negative (although it was then sent to Columbia University and was then given a positive). Nicole -
ARCHIVED Why Is The Biopsy Necessary?
Nic replied to dandelionmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Having the biopsy or not having the biopsy is a personal decision. My son was 4 when he was diagnosed and we did have the biopsy done and it was not a terrible experience for him. There was no discomfort involved. The colonoscopy was a different story which was not done on the same day. He had a lot of gas pain afterwards. Nicole -
ARCHIVED Mom Of 15 Month Old With Celiac Disease
Nic replied to SDevanney's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, this is a tough one because the GI will probably want to do a biopsy which means you would have to keep him on gluten until then. The biopsy will only come up positive if he is eating gluten. Unless you are not willing to do the biopsy and are going to rely on the blood work for your dianosis which a lot of people do. Maybe you could call the GI office... -
ARCHIVED Will I Ever Go...
Nic replied to jak26's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My son was severely constipated before his diagnosis. Nothing worked for him, not stool softeners, laxatives, enimas, not even the drink before a colonoscopy. Once gluten free I promised him that by giving up all his favorite foods he would be able to poop. Well, I was wrong, going gluten free didn't change that much for him. Finally, this year, a new... -
ARCHIVED Poll: Are You Proud Of....
Nic replied to LoveBeingATwin's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hi, thanks for the nice words but I say Kudos to all of us teachers who dedicate our lives to educating the children of this country when so many rediculous demands are being put on both us and the students from people who have no idea what we do everyday. But to do it in an inner city does require a lot of patience and I feel as though I have lost some... -
ARCHIVED Baby Alive Doll
Nic replied to Guhlia's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, I don't know anything about Baby Alive (other than the fact that I loved mine when I was little) but when I was pregnant with my youngest I was also so large that everyone wondered the same thing. They were predicting a big baby, they said around 8-9 pounds. Well I went until my due date and had to have a c-section because he wouldn't move down. The... -
ARCHIVED Poll: Are You Proud Of....
Nic replied to LoveBeingATwin's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I am a teacher in an inner-city school system and am very proud of that. A lot of people choose these types of districts as a stepping stone to gain experience but I chose this district nearly 10 years ago. I wanted to work in an inner-city school and it is on a good day challenging. Just when "burn out" started to set in, my principal moved me from the... -
Hi, someone once posted about making individual pizzas out of soft corn tortilla and I can't remember exactly how they said they did it. I believe they brushed it with olive oil and then cooked it in the broiler. Does anyone else remember?

ARCHIVED Colonoscopy Tomorrow
Nic replied to Teacher1958's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
When my son had his last colonoscopy in March (he is 6) they gave him the half lite too. But for him it was 2 pills and then he had to start drinking 8 oz every 10-15 minutes. But for a child he didn't have to finish the solution (1/2 gallon I believe). Once he was pooping clear we were aloud to stop so by the 4th glass we could stop which was bad enough... -
ARCHIVED Son Scheduled For Scope At Georgetown
Nic replied to arlingtonmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
When my son had his biopsy and it came back negative, the doctor chose to send it on to Columbia but only because he was so sure the blood was showing Celiac. We could have just gone with the positive bloodwork but I really wanted to be sure because I didn't want to be missing some other cause for his symptoms and he was in so much pain I needed to be sure... -
Hi, if anyone knows who to contact to get information on which places serve gluten free food can you post it? We are planning a trip as well and would love to be prepared ahead of time. Nicole

ARCHIVED Skepticism From Family
Nic replied to Janniec6's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, my son was diagnosed at 4 but my father and my aunt were both diagnosed at 50. So there is no age limit to being diagnosed. As far as the testing is concerned, my sons blood work was also off the charts. The GI doc was positive it was Celiac but still wanted to do the biopsy to confirm it. I was all for it because I was so upset about changing his... -
ARCHIVED I'm New ~ My 3 Year Old Was Just Diagnosed
Nic replied to dandelionmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, my son was 4 when he was diagnosed and I explained to him that he has Celiac Disease which makes his body confused. I told him that his body thinks that wheat (gluten) is a poison and it makes him sick. He thought it was funny that his body was confused and he understood what poison was and he certainly knew what being sick was as he was so sick. Never... -
ARCHIVED Are Julia's Favorite Foods Safe?
Nic replied to dandelionmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, I am not sure about the yogurt but the Rice Krispies are not safe. They contain barley malt. Envirokids makes a chocolate flavored type krispy cereal. Frito corn chips are fine but read the ingredients for soft tortillas because most are wheat unless you buy the the corn tortilla. The chicken nugget are out unless you buy those labelled gluten free... -
ARCHIVED Does Any One Elses Children Have Constipation Problems?
Nic replied to jenwestphal's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Have you considered trying dairy? As I said above it was really the dairy free diet that changed things dramatically for my son. Nicole -
ARCHIVED Does Any One Elses Children Have Constipation Problems?
Nic replied to jenwestphal's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, my son was so constipated before his diagnosis that 4 enimas in the ER couldn't get him going, not even the colonoscopy prep got him moving. I thought the same thing, diarrhea goes with Celiac but so does constipation apparently. He did somewhat better after the gluten free diet but it was really going dairy free that fixed the problem all together... -
ARCHIVED Newly Dx W/ Question About Food
Nic replied to fkewatson's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, I use Bell & Evans gluten free chicken nuggets and also Ian's. The good thing about Ian's is that they are allegen free, not just gluten free. -
ARCHIVED Emotional Iissues Over "being Different"
Nic replied to pinktroll's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I also think it is so important to focus on the positive when these situations come up. I know it is hard, especially if your child didn't feel sick to begin with. But I have really made it a point to console (sp) him on his really bad days and to absolutely sympathize but I never show him I feel sorry for him (even though I do) because I don't want him... -
ARCHIVED Emotional Iissues Over "being Different"
Nic replied to pinktroll's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, I am not sure if you were really asking the question, "why should she suffer ..." or were you just venting (as we all need to do). But just incase it was a real question, the damage to the intestines and the lack of nutrients will continue even without the obvious symtoms. I am sorry that your daughter has so many food issues, for my son it is just... -
ARCHIVED Emotional Iissues Over "being Different"
Nic replied to pinktroll's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, my son is also 6 but was diagnosed at 4. For the most part he is very accepting of the diet because for him, the symptoms were horrible and he was so sick. So he completely understands that if he eats gluten he will be sick and in pain. BUT, we have also been in that unexpected positition when someone gives the kids food and he is the only one who... -
If he is on a gluten free diet wouldn't that explain the negative for wheat? I believe you need to be eating wheat to produce antibodies against it. There are other people on this forum that are intolerant to other grains as well so they can help you with the rice. I am surprised about the oats because if he is gluten free he wouldn't be eating any to...
