My son is the same way with the soy milk. I put him on rice milk instead. He drinks the plain Westsoy Rice Milk but I make it into chocolate milk for him to drink. In his cereal he just uses it plain, I also cook with it. The vanilla version is good too, it is very subtle. Don't buy the Rice Dreams rice milk because it does contain some barley (I am...

ARCHIVED Response I Got My From Alexis Stewart
Nic replied to VegasCeliacBuckeye's topic in Publications & Publicity
If you noticed on Alexis' website under the day 8/10, they say that people from a celiac message board were offended by what they said. They go on to state they did not mean to be offensive and then give a list of all these people who have celiac and were not offended. But what they leave out is how rude and offensive her responses have been to the people... -
ARCHIVED Could He Have Celiac Also...
Nic replied to goldyjlox's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, we never had any rash issues so I can't judge based on the description. But I would have to assume if you noticed it after introducing wheat there is a good chance there is a wheat problem. Nicole -
ARCHIVED Response I Got My From Alexis Stewart
Nic replied to VegasCeliacBuckeye's topic in Publications & Publicity
I will also add that for those of us who have Celiac children, it is certainly more than a "pain in the butt". To watch your child suffer terribly, for some of us for years, for others maybe not so long, but to watch them suffer even for a day is horrible. And now that they are gluten free and healthy (thank God) we have to watch them struggle with their... -
What kind of problems does your daughter have? My son has always been a big sweater and more recently has been feeling sick to his stomach (like he is going to vomit) and week in the legs (says his legs are shaky) when it is too hot. I just figured he was one of those people that cannot handle the heat. Nicole

ARCHIVED We Have Growth!
Nic replied to zarfkitty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Congratulations on the weight gain and growth!! During the first year and a half my son was gluten free he gained 15 pounds and grew 6 and a half inches. It is so exciting to see them thrive. Nicole -
As an infant his hypotonia was so bad that he could not bare any weight on his legs at all. That is what first clued us in. He also couldn't suck well and had very little appetite. At 5 months he was drinking between 3-5 ounces per bottle with no interest in cereals or other baby food even though he was drinking 4 ounces when we left the hospital (he...

Hi, you are right, it is subtype 7,6. He was tested through blood about a year ago and it came back negative but we know how that can go. He currently does eat gluten but I would say he is about 50% gluten free as it is easier for me to cook gluten free for the whole family since my other son is Celiac. But he does still eat gluten for lunch everyday....

HI, my oldest son has Celiac and carries the DQ 2 gene. I had my youngest son tested just for the gene through Enterolab and he has the DQ1 and DQ3 genes. They said not Celiac but gluten sensitivity genes. I have been reading a lot about the DQ1 gene and the slight possiblity of Celiac related to the gene. But all of the articles are connected to Dr....

When my sister, not a Celiac, was in the hospital after the birth of her second son she was extremely constipated. The nurse said if you mix prune juice with apple juice and then warm it (yuck) it works very well. We have never tried it but at least it is a natural remedy. Good luck.

My doctor took me and all of his patients off the patch as it has a higher risk of dangerous side effects than the pill. -
ARCHIVED How Can You Test A 2 Year Old?
Nic replied to ItchyMeredith's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, I guess you have a couple of options. You can make him gluten heavy for a while (I am not sure how long) and then test again. Or, you can try the gluten free diet and see if he reacts positively. Being you are a Celiac there is a good chance he is carrying the gene as well so it could be likely that he is Celiac also. At 2 he is still young enough... -
ARCHIVED Bruises
Nic replied to lilypad23's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have no idea if it is Celiac related but my son, who was diagnosed 2 years ago, bruises terribly. I know that most 6 year olds have plenty of bruises but he seems to be a bit much. I'm interested to hear what other people have to say. -
ARCHIVED Questions About Starting School
Nic replied to dandelionmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, where did you buy the container for the sandwiches? I am in a panick about keeping things hot or cold as I am also sending lunch with my son for the first time this year. Nicole -
Hi, I am not sure anything should be considered as safe without asking. My 6 year old is the one with Celiac and we learned early on you always have to check. For example, we went to the Rain Forest Cafe and asked for the mini hotdogs with no buns. Well, we found out that their hotdogs come frozen and already in the bun. Bascially the are just nuking...

Hi, I have read about other people on this board who were not DQ2 or 8 positive. I believe statistically it is like 90 some odd percent of people with Celiac carry one of those two. But it isn't 100% carry it so the change is still there. Also, maybe he isn't Celiac but instead gluten intolerant. The symptoms would be the same and so would the treatment...

ARCHIVED Questions About Starting School
Nic replied to dandelionmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, my son is a little older, he is going into first grade. But he was diagnosed when he was in pre-school. When he started school the doctor had to fill out a physical form and he put on it that Jacob had Celiac Disease so it is on record but when he was diagnosed, it was in May of his pre-school year and we didn't bring a note, I just spoke to them. ... -
ARCHIVED Vet Called Me During Surgery On Big Boy Not Good News
Nic replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I am hoping all goes well for your cat. How old is he? We lost our beloved Grizzly Bear (a cat) 2 years ago to kidney failure. She was 17 years old. We actually decided to put her down because she was so sick and the doctor said it could go on that way for several days or up to a week or more. She was no longer eating or drinking and couldn't walk anymore... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Allergy
Nic replied to dadoffiveboys's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, I am glad your family is doing so much better. It is shocking how many different symptoms are caused by food allergies/intolerances. My oldest son is a diagnosed Celiac and is also dairy intolerant. His primary symtoms were constipation (chronic and severe). Gluten free helped but dairy free really fixed him it seems. My youngest son, according the... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free When With Dairy Intolerance
Nic replied to Lindsay GFMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son struggles more with the dairy than the gluten. He loved his milk before we realized he was intolerant. He was not formally tested for milk so we didn't really know if it was lactose or casein. But when we took him off dairy, we took him off any form, even the little bit you might find in packaged cookies. We read every ingredient the same as with... -
ARCHIVED I'm So Glad I Got Scoped Again
Nic replied to melrobsings's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, my 6 year old son is Celiac and dairy intolerant. Oddly, the syptoms that led us to the Celiac were actually caused by the dairy. He was constipated, which I know you are not, but his poop was never hard. And when he did go, MY GOODNESS, he would fill the toilet with soft poop. We couldn't imagine how all of that poop fit inside of him. And yes,... -
ARCHIVED Hope Someone Can Help Me Figure This Out
Nic replied to confused's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I had chicken pox at 17 so I remember them vividly. The bumps looked like they had a bubble on them. Very ichy, started with just a few and then it spread all over, even on my gums. From what I understand, the rash wouldn't be worsening if it were due to the shots. Let us know what it is. -
Hi, being a teacher myself I have never had a student with a 504 although I have had plenty with medical conditions. I work in an inner city where most of the families in my school are under educated and live in the projects, they might not be aware it exists. For my own son, he started kindergarten last school year and we were very lucky because there...

In case anyone wants to know, I just received an e mail back from Kraft regarding my attempts at making their pudding dairy free (it is also gluten free). I had tried the instant pudding with rice milk and failed terribly as it was just a cold vanilla soup . They said that I can make the cooked pudding using soy milk but that it would just come out a...

ARCHIVED Just Need To Get This Out......
Nic replied to confused's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
This is a great idea. Even if he never gives it to her, it will give him a chance to get in touch with his own feelings and understand them better. Also, don't forget that teenagers think they are un-touchable. That is why they so freely try alcohol, drugs, and unprotected sex. They don't believe anything bad will happen to them. This is probably...
