Pickles are generally gluten-free. Vlasic is definitely gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED Need Help - New Possible Dx - Son Sick!
penguin replied to DebbieJny's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Welcome to the board! Sorry your son is sick, and that you can't find a good dr. to help. Did they run the full celiac panel or just one type of antibody? Where in Upstate NY are you? I used to have a great pediatrician (for myself ) in Syracuse. Her name is Dr. Cummings and she's in East Syracuse. St. Joeseph's in Syracuse is a great health... -
ARCHIVED Restless Legs Syndrom (rls)
penguin replied to Smitten's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I get the problem in my knees from time to time. It doesn't hurt, but for some reason tylenol helps me sleep with it. Don't know why. I also get wicked charley horses at night, but for me, that's hereditary. Everyone in my family has the problem, most of us have low blood pressure and my mom has has a low sodium problem. Orange juice and bananas help... -
I have had those pains for about 3 years, and about half the time I end up throwing up. My doctor calls it pyloric spasms, your stomach muscle literally spasms like any other muscle. They come once every 2-3 months for me, though now I think it's gluten related. It seems like I get that pain 3-4 days after glutening, although I'm not sure of the correllation...

I really hate microwave popcorn and only eat it *very* occasionally. I work at the boy scouts so there is popcorn everywhere Sometimes I get hungry and I don't have anything with me, ergo, microwave popcorn. I always do mine in oil. I don't like unitasker appliances (like airpoppers) because I already have too many gadgets and appliances in my kitchen... -

ARCHIVED I'm Going To *gasp* Bake A Cake
penguin replied to penguin's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
OK, let's see if I can help. I think the tapioca flour could be subbed for potato starch flour and/or sorghum flour. I don't think the xanthan gum is necessary in this, so I'd just omit it, or use some unflavored gelatin instead. For eggs, you can use egg replacer, or there are people on here that have tons of egg replacing methods. Mayo is easy, you can... -
ARCHIVED I'm Going To *gasp* Bake A Cake
penguin replied to penguin's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
So, I made the cake, or cupcakes and little cake, rather. They're really pretty, I added a packet of sugar free white chocolate pudding (since that's what I had) and it added a nice flavor, though I'd add full sugar pudding next time. I only ate a sliver, because every time I bake or buy a cake, I remember that I don't really like cake that much... -

Good gluten-free snacky things are popcorn (I prefer the old fashioned way of popping it on the stove, though plenty of the microwave stuff is gluten-free), gluten-free cereal (Barbara's Honey Rice puffins are good, Neopets Islandberry Crunch is mainstream and gluten-free), ice cream (many are gluten-free), baby carrots, apple slices, dried fruits... the... -
Maltodextrin is generally safe. It sounds like it has WRBO in it, but it doesn't. I believe it's derived from corn.

ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed With Dh, Need Help
penguin replied to fastcatkerry's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Welcome to the board! You'll find all the info you need on here! First, I would sue your doctor! That's outrageous! You have a potentially life threatening (down the line), definitely quality of life diminishing disease and she didn't tell you for two years?!?! A good pre-workout snack is apples and peanut butter. Sticks to your ribs and has... -
ARCHIVED I'm Going To *gasp* Bake A Cake
penguin posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Once upon a time, there was a girl who was the best baker in all the land. And then an evil fairy laid a curse on her which made her beloved flour toxic. The only way to defeat the evil fairy was to make gluten-free cupcakes. Unfortunately, the evil Celiac fairy laid traps everywhere! The girl was afraid and wished she only had to go fight a dragon instead... -
ARCHIVED For Women - Question About Periods....
penguin replied to DingoGirl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've been totally screwy since being dx'ed, and I'm on the pill! I was off the pill for a month and my period came a whopping 10 days late! That's never happened before, even going off the pill. Now I'm just kind of spotty. I don't know what the hell is going on! -
Thanks guys! Those look awesome! I have to try those sometime! I did, however, find a well-rated recipe on allrecipes.com that matches my lazy mood today .... Basic Microwave Risotto INGREDIENTS: 3 tablespoons butter 1 clove garlic, minced 1 onion, chopped 1 1/2 cups vegetable broth 1 cup uncooked Arborio rice 3/4 cup white...

No experience with Flonase while gluten-free, but if there's gluten in it, it can cause problems when there is any drainage from the sinuses that gets into the intestinal tract. Don't know about the zyrtec though, other than that its gluten-free... -

ARCHIVED General Mills Neopets Cereal
penguin replied to gabrielle's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I had the neopets cereal yesterday for breakfast, with real milk even, and they didn't cause a problem at all. -
I've got some aborrio rice just sitting around, and I need a good recipe to use it. Last time I tried making it it took an hour and a half and came out too salty. It was a burn to my ego because I'm an excellent cook normally. I think my ego has healed enough to try again Help is much appreciated

I rub some lemon across the top of the artichoke after cutting off the top. I also don't trim all the thorns unless someone is going to see them, because the thorns get soft after cooking, anyway. Oh, and I put lemon slices and a few cloves of garlic in the water, as well. Mayo is a popular dipping sauce as well, if that's your thing (yuck!)

ARCHIVED Dannon Light N Fit Smoothies
penguin replied to e&j0304's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Dannon won't guarantee any of their products as gluten-free. It's more than likely a CYA statement, but companies that do that annoy me, so I don't buy them. Stonyfield Farms is gluten-free, and I think yoplait is too. I use the Stonyfield smoothies all the time with no ill effects. -
ARCHIVED Glutened Aaaagain...
penguin replied to penguin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think the pancake/baking mix made me sick too, though not in the same way. There are almonds in the flour, and while I'm not allergic to them, I am allergic to the pecans and walnuts they use in other things, I'm thinking they process all the nuts on the same machine. I got a rash in my mouth after eating some biscuits I made with the baking mix. I...
