ARCHIVED America's 10 Hottest Food Trends
penguin replied to Claire's topic in Publications & Publicity
Having the gluten-free diet being trendy is like having a peanut allergy diet being trendy. It makes no sense! I'm afraid that if it becomes the next fad diet, restaurants and brands will become less careful about cc and whatnot. Most people aren't going to get sick from ingesting gluten. It'll be a lot harder to be taken seriously. Not to... -
Popcorn is just plain hard on some people's stomachs. It's sharp and pointy! Add a bunch of fat and oils to that and if you have a sensitive stomach, BAM! And at movies especially, we tend to overeat the popcorn.

ARCHIVED Teenager Needing Help With Blood Results
penguin replied to macdwp01's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My IgG was the only one elevated, and I was dx'ed by that and dietary response. My Dr. didn't feel the biopsy was necessary. Positive dietary response is valid! Especially if there is a family history... As far as the other conditions related to a high IgG, what are they? I can't find a listing anywhere, except maybe Chron's. -
ARCHIVED Reese's Eggs
penguin replied to StrongerToday's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hershey plainly labels gluten-containing ingredents. If it doesn't say wheat, barley, rye, or oats, you're ok. As far as I knew, the only gluteny reese's things were the mini eggs that are shaped like cadbury eggs. -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Here Have A Pda?
penguin replied to frenchiemama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have a palm T l X. It's great, I love it and I have the Clan Thompson list on it. I also had DH put the Delphi list into acrobat and put that on there. It's a lifesaver. I think I got it for $260 Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Ranch Dressing
penguin posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
OK, I tried a search but didn't find what I was looking for... I'm making potato skins tonight (my arteries are clogging already ) and I need a ranch dressing for dipping. I really dislike the Kraft ranch dressing, always have. Anyone know of a gluten-free ranch dressing that tastes close to Hidden Valley? They won't say their dressing is gluten... -
ARCHIVED Please Help Me Find The Hidden Gluten In My Dinner
penguin replied to tiffjake's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I got glutened at an Outback, also. I had their shrimp appetizer and by the middle of my salad I was sick. SO annoying. I think the sauce probably got contaminated. Also, when I get glutened, almost everything I eat for a few days makes me feel glutened. I think the body just goes hyperactive after glutening. Maybe the steak didn't agree with you... -
ARCHIVED Soy Sauce In Individual Packets
penguin replied to lpellegr's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I know Kraft ranch is gluten-free, and as always, Kraft plainly labels gluten. Their modified food starch is corn unless stated otherwise. Enjoy! -
ARCHIVED Soy Sauce In Individual Packets
penguin replied to lpellegr's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications

UPDATE on my grandfather... my mom corrected me, he's 88 not 87. Also, she forgot to tell me that he's TALKING. Not much, but talking. I had no idea. A couple weeks ago, some family was there and were leaving. His cousin said, "I'll be back in 2 days" he said, "I'll be here". His son said said, "I'll be back to see you soon" he said, "I'll be here...

ARCHIVED Glutened Aaaagain...
penguin replied to penguin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I made pamelas bread the day I went gluten-free and threw it away, because it tasted like slimy hummus. Should have learned my lesson. I ate a cookie, once, too. But soon after going gluten-free. Aren't they made in a dedicated facility? -
ARCHIVED Glutened Aaaagain...
penguin posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So I made my weekly pizza, only this time I used Pamela's bread mix instead of the chebe mix I normally use. I did nothing different other wise, same sauce, spices, cheese, pans, parchment. I used the mix and packet of fleishman's rapid rise yeast. I have a policy of not using the yeast in mixes, since I don't know how old it is. Anybody know anything... -
Oh! I thought of something else! We were originally going to do this but changed venue and had to make it earlier in the evening. You could have your ceremony at say, 8pm, and then have a dessert reception. Tables full of cakes, cheesecakes, truffles, fruit, maybe a chocolate fountain, an ice cream bar...the possibilities are endless! and decadent! Have...

ARCHIVED Tater Tots
penguin replied to Moongirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yeah, I saw them on a gluten-free list recently, so I was surprised when they weren't on the website... I've eaten them. They did, however, make me sick, but I don't know if it was gluten or if my body just didn't like the oil in them. Or the potatoes themselves bothered me, who knows anymore -
ARCHIVED Tater Tots
penguin replied to Moongirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Open Original Shared Link That's their list. I didn't see tater tots, though I tend to be "tot blind" I've missed them on lists before GLUTEN FREE PRODUCTS If you suffer from celiac disease (gluten intolerance) you will be pleased to know that the Ore-Ida® Brand offers a wide variety of products that are gluten-free. ... -
ARCHIVED Johnny Rocket's Is Celiac Friendly
penguin replied to de caps's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Here's their Celiac statement - impressive! "Notes about wheat allergies and celiac disease Celiac disease and wheat allergies are two distinct conditions. Celiac disease, or celiac sprue, is a permanent adverse reaction to gluten. Those with celiac disease will not lose their sensitivity to this substance. This disease requires a lifelong restriction... -
ARCHIVED Emotional Reaction From Gluten? Do You Get This?
penguin replied to tiffjake's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was pm-ing her through the "incident", and I'm pretty sure she'll be back to the boards. She just was upset and stepping away from the thread for a while. -
CONGRATULATIONS!!! Now that THAT is out of the way! I wasn't gluten-free at my wedding, but a lot of our food was naturally that way. We did a heavy hors d'oevure buffet for ours. I let the restaurant just put out whatever they wanted, because I'd done many banquets with them before and trusted them. We had salad, shrimp, marinated vegetables...

ARCHIVED Emotional Reaction From Gluten? Do You Get This?
penguin replied to tiffjake's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ditto to that. Getting emotional for no reason is about the 3rd symptom I have of glutening. Brain fog, face goes numb, and then I get depressed. And I'm overly sensitive on a good day!!! -
ARCHIVED Thank You For The Warm Welcome
penguin replied to bev40's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
In the case of Celiacs, at least, the nails don't grow well because of vitamin deficiencies. Spiltting, cracking, peeling, dents, and ridges can all be blamed on vitamin deficiencies. Here's a website that explains: Open Original Shared Link -
I got a call from my mom last night. My 87 year old grandfather, who had valve replacement surgery the day after I went gluten-free, so 2/3 I guess, is not doing well. He had a lot of plaque in his aorta and had a bunch of teeny strokes from micro bits of plaque that got loose. He is still cognitively there, because he responds to and recognizes family, starting...
