ARCHIVED How Do Your Loved Ones Deal With Your Celiac?
penguin replied to Laura's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was put on the diet by my doctor at a very bad time in my family. I had to travel to a neighboring state on the second day of my diet for a family crisis. My mom was really supportive at first, really interested in what would replace and etc. She didn't even roll her eyes too much when I wanted her to wash my raw steak off when she used a questionable seasoning... -
ARCHIVED Boost Energy Drink
penguin replied to skinnyminny's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
They are all lactose free, but they are choc full of casien. Lactose is the milk sugar, casein is the milk protein. If anyone wanted to do a casein challege, boost high protein would be excellent. -
OK, I am not trying to find a weight loss shake. While I could stand to lose weight, I'm just trying to find something quick in case I get stuck somewhere and I get hypoglycemic and can't get a meal. I tried the Boost high protein, but it made me REALLY sick. Too much milk protein at once, I think, or drinking it fast was a bad idea. Either way I...

ARCHIVED Boost Energy Drink
penguin replied to skinnyminny's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
All boost except for the chocolate malt is gluten-free. I've only had the high protein, but it made me SICK. I don't think I could handle that much milk protein all at once. Either that or it was the combination of milk protein and vegetable oil. Whichever -
Man, I hope you don't have it either. I would argue that ALS IS the most CRUEL disease on the planet. One of my scout's dad is in the end stages, in his case it's going from the inside out. He's been on a feeding tube a few years now. It's so sad to see him, since I know he's there, especially since he waves, nods, etc. You would think after 4 years,...

ARCHIVED gluten-free Angel Food Cake
penguin replied to 2Boys4Me's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Is the texture more like pound cake or something? Once upon a wheat filled time, I made a white cake with my girl scouts from scratch and they forgot the baking powder. It was like low cholesterol pound cake Would you mind posting the recipe, maybe? -
ARCHIVED I Would Like To Thank Vietnam...
penguin replied to penguin's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I'll look at the menu when I get home, but I think most of their stuff is dairy free, as well. I don't think milk is used much in asian cooking. -
I agree. Apple Nutrition Facts (*One medium 2-1/2 inch apple, fresh, raw, with skin) Calories 81 Carbohydrate 21 grams Dietary Fiber 4 grams (20% RDA) Calcium 10 mg Phosphorus 10 mg Iron .25 mg Sodium 0.00 mg Potassium 159 mg Vitamin C 8 mg Vitamin A 73 IU Folate 4 mcg So let's say the smallish apple has 3 grams of...

I must have a gaurdian angel from Zagat, because what sheer coincidence. Yesterday, I had to go to my local copy place to pick up some printed materials for work. When I got there, the copies were wrong, so they had to be redone. Normally, we have this stuff delivered, but I schlepped over there because I had to go to the other office to do what I needed...

ARCHIVED Doctor Wants Universal Celiac Testing
penguin replied to Claire's topic in Publications & Publicity
I'm glad the article got posted, I was going to post it yesterday but didn't get a chance to. Overall, it was a good article. Some of the local celiacs here wrote letters to the editor saying how, yes, there are replacements and they're yummy. Why is it again that the doctors are afraid their patients won't be able to eat CRAP anymore? -
ARCHIVED Kinnikinnick.....
penguin replied to jaten's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think it should be a documentary in which a group of celiacs go across the country eating at restaurants, and record the hilarity that ensues. I wish I had a video camera when the McDonald's chick in BFE Texas screamed "YOU DON'T WANT NO BUN?!?" -
I've been to lots of zoos all over the country, including the san diego zoo, but my favorite by far is the Central Park zoo. It's not the biggest zoo, and it's not the most impressive, but it's got so much charm! They have polar bears, a big rainforest building, seals, lots of penguins. I've been there a million times and I never get sick of it. I got...

ARCHIVED Kettels *warning Misleading Bags* Maybe
penguin replied to Lister's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Kettle chips were my first glutening. Had me running to the bathroom within 15 minutes. The company told me not to eat them because of cc. -
The Sony Wonder technology lab is pretty cool. It's free, it's designed for kids, BUT there is a ton of interesting history on technology and electronics. My borther and I (31 and 22, respectively) really like it. It's a fun way to spend time. It's in the Sony building, but I don't remember the cross streets. Staten Island ferry is free and the best...

ARCHIVED Experiences With Biopsies And Young Children (under 2yrs)
penguin replied to betsy7's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Why is it that Dr's are so apprehensive about the gluten-free diet? Nobody died of not being able to eat a donut! -
ARCHIVED What Do You Do When You Get Glutened?
penguin replied to coco-loco's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
With all of your other intolerances, I would definitely try to figure out what is in the natural flavors. I can tell you with certainty that Red Bull is gluten-free, but I don't know about everything else. One crisis at a time, for me anyway! -

Erm, did she not get the memo about vegetarians not eating chicken? Milk and eggs sure, if you swing that way, but not the animal of origin I thought the point of vegetarians was NOT to kill an animal to eat that. Maybe she's picking her chicken off the poultry tree. It seems that she's one of those people that find bones, blood, and skin "icky...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Beer Online

A Blue Jays game! I went to one in middle school and it's the only thing I remember from my only trip to Toronto. That's saying a lot since I blocked out the majority of middle school

ARCHIVED What Do You Do When You Get Glutened?
penguin replied to coco-loco's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I always drink a red bull at the first sign of glutening (I'm having one now!). The caffene brings the energy up to a halfway decent level, and all the b-vitamins help the brainfog. Immediatley after glutening, it's my best weapon. I'm sure the niacin does something good, too. I have problems taking regular vitamins, so it really works for me. Also a...
