  1. Actually, Doll does NOT strike me as being either unsupportive or critical. She is doing what we are all doing on this board: exchanging ideas, experiences, and perspectives. Unfortunately, Western medicine, naturopathic medicine, and chiropractic care share two traits: they all have some real cures to offer, and they all have quacks practicing them...
  2. First off, I am very happy that you won, and I wish the same for Cindy! As far as the religion thing goes, I DO believe in God--but I don't believe that He crashed the plane, and I don't believe that He swung the outcome of the trial, any more than He would have "caused" the idiots in the system to remove your children from your care in the first place...
  3. I agree with almost everything you say, but not this!!!! I really like the career I've chosen. Why. after 20 years, should I throw it out and spend 6 years in medical school just because I think many of the doctors I've had aren't worth the time I've spent in their offices, let alone the $25 copay? I think the medical insurance and pharmaceutical industries...
  4. I know what you mean, I've seen that for years, too. It's not like I've never eaten apples before! This was totally different from anything I've ever seen. This wasn's pinkish or reddish, it was screaming neon candy-apple red in splotches--it looked almost like poster paint.
  5. I agree with jnclelland. BTW, it's wonderful that you have nursed this long--it's probably kept your baby from the kinds of problems many on this board have seen with their children. If you feel it's necessary to wean at this time, that's certainly your decision, but if you are being pressured by friends or even a pediatrician to wean, then it's time...
  6. Gelatin in a flour mix??? What brand? I just checked a bunch of mixes at the grocery store, and they just have variations on rice flour, corn starch, tapioca starch, potato starch, and a few of them have garbanzo or fava flour. I wonder why they put gelatin in?
  7. wow. Thank you for the info.
  8. What do the dips and white specks in the nails mean? I used to have those, too--but not now. I don't know when they went away, but I've only been off gluten for about 7 months.
  9. I don't think anybody on this board has regretted going off gluten--regardless of lack of official diagnosis or lack of approval from a doctor. Like Lynne and Ursula say, you don't need permission from a doctor to use your brain and change your diet. If you go off gluten for 6 months, and decide that gluten wasn't really your problem, it's not like you...
  10. Hi, Cycler--welcome to the board! I highly highly hihgly recommend the submarine sandwich bread recipe in Annalise Roberts' Gluten-Free Baking Classics--it tastes just like bakery peasant bread--yum! Also, if you do a search on this board, there was a recipe for gluten-free challah floating around a few months ago. Pardon the ignorance here (I'm Jewish...
  11. Chelsea, I know I'm probably very late in noticing, but HOW did you get your penguin avatar to have a kitty head????
  12. Leah--I cried when I read your post today. lots of {{{HUGS}}} and may Jane live on forever in your memory and the memories of the many who love her. It's probably no comfort, but now you have your very own angel up in Heaven.... Susan--I'm woefully ignorant of bipolar disorder, but just wanted to throw two thoughts your way, both of whcih you may have...
  13. I've seen them that way, too, but the "bleeding" was just a tiny bit of red on the white flesh near the skin. This was candy-apple red and it went all the way to the core. I've never seen that kind of red on an apple before, only in lipsticks!
  14. Ooh, that sounds good!
  15. I bought a bag of Jersey Macs today. I noticed that they were redder than usual (usually they have quite a bit of green on the outside as well as red), and when I sliced one open, the inside was screaming red in splotches--as though someone had dipped it in red ink and it had bled through. The bag had a website listed--www.nyapplecountry.com--which...
  16. Is this true for all premies or does your little one have a specific disorder that puts her at risk? We were never told to worry about any of that, and our son was 4 1/2 pounds with a hole in his heart. ???
  17. I'm sorry, Ursula, I didn't mean to imply that YOU were opposed to learning to understand. From waht I've read, though, the majority of Aspies are--similar to deaf people being against the whole idea of cochlear implants. Based on what you've let slip about your husband, "unpredictable" is probably the nicest way to describe him.... I...
  18. You're not overprotective! Whenit comes to the health of your children, especially if there are health issues, caution is better than not! I know how you feel about the shopping carts--I carried my oldest (who had open-heart surgery when he was 2) in a sling until he was 3+ and I was 7 months pregnant with the next one! Would her pediatrician approve...
  19. I make something very similar, but use honey instead of the sugar, and add ginger and garlic (fresh, not powdered). If you want one of those thick basting sauces, mix it in a small saucepan, heat to boiling, and stir in i tablespoon of cornstarch mixed with a tablespoon of water.
  20. Yes--the whole cookbook, all she uses is potato starch and cornstarch.
  21. I totally agree. However, I do feel very strongly that you could have been taught (NOT forced) in such a way as to be able to function more like NTs. I would even think, if you weren't so dead set against it, that you could be taught (not forced) even now. Again, people with AS can be taught HOW to understand unwritten rules and body/facial...
  22. Sorry if this is repeating what others have already said, but are you sure you have eliminated: hot chocolate mix some milkshakes french fries at restaurants (diped in seasoned flour before frying) soy sauce (except for La Choy brand and San-J brand) Teriyaki sauce (most but not all brands) hoisin sauce Rice Krispies Corn FLakes sauce or salad dressing...
  23. Do you have a link to that recommendation by the NIH? I'd like to forward it to my parents. My dad was diagnosed a few months ago with diabetes (and he's in his 80's!). He now exercises every day, severely lowered his carb intake (his doctor actually advised him to do so), lost 20 pounds, and is now officially not diabetic. I was trying to talk him...
  24. Yes, I did, and it was quite good! Thanks so much for the recipe! I'm monkeying around now with a buttermilk bread recipe from Roben Ryberg's Gluten Free Kitchen. It's actually delicious, but I can't get it to rise worth a darn (recipe calls for 2 teaspoons of baking powder--think I'll try afull ttablespoon next time). It doesn't use rice flour at all...
  25. The meds are just to make it easier for the doctor. They don't do a thing for the patient. It's kind of like the old days when a mom giving birth was knocked out. It's the same thing with dentistry--people get knocked out all the time to have their wisdom teeth taken out, which, if the dentist knows what he or she is doing with Novacaine, IS NOT PAINFUL...
