  1. (sigh) I'm so far behind, you guys will have already moved to Rachelville before I even finish reading today's posts! (And I'm still on yesterday's--my, my, my, you guys have been busy!) We need all the musicians we can get! Whoever heard of an orchestra with only one musician? And the Rachelville Orchestra will be able to handle anything from...
  2. Thanks, Lisa--I'm gonna try it!
  3. Like most arguments in this world, there are valid points on both sides. Bernese was asked her opinion, and gave it. Then she was asked to explain it, and she did so honestly. I saw no malice in how she expressed herself. But then there seemed to be an awful lot of posts (yes, complete with name-calling) attacking her for expressing that opinion. ...
  4. Where do you get salt pork? Would bacon do? Do you cook it first?
  5. Tanya, I'm sending you love, prayers, rest, and renewed strength.
  6. Somebody tell me if there's a good reason not to do this, but a friend of mine who seems to me to be very nutrition- and chemical-savvy instructed me to ALWAYS wash grapes. Not rinse. Wash. With dish soap. Which actually makes sense, because if you read the ingredients on the expensive fruit and vegetable wash that they sell in the produce aisle, the active...
  7. Seeds? SEEDS? There are SEEDS in the blasted things? Why can't I have seeds for something nice, like long eyelashes?
  8. Susan, thank you for your thoughts--I understand and appreciate them more than I can say. I'm convinced I've heard one other answer to some of my prayers, and that was something like, "My dear child, it's not up to me," (with great sadness) (His, as well as mine). Come to think of it, there has also been, "My dear child, I've already given you what...
  9. Lynn, I don't see anything to correct! I might add, though, that I read that learning disabilities seem to occur with very high frequency in men with Marfan's. My oldest was checked for Marfan's (they do a blood test--it shows up as a genetic mutation) as he is extremely tall and lanky, and has cardiac and other issues. They didn't come up with anything...
  10. I'm very relieved for Megan, but, oh, how sad for the other mom. (We need a crying smiley...) The night after Michael's open-heart surgery, an eight-year-old boy who had been hit by a car while riding his bicycle was Life-flighted to Children's hospital. He didn't make it through the night. I will never ever forget his mother's face as she walked...
  11. Carriefaith, how are you today?
  12. I htought it was dangerous to take such a high dose without tapering off...... Are you sure that was correct? Could the dr or pharmacy have screwed up and forgotten to taper you off? I apologize for making you nervous, but if you were my sister, I'd be on the phone with the doctor asking if this was what he meant for sure, and if so, what side effects...
  13. Jeny, go with your own instincts. If your child has any issues on the autism spectrum, you are probably far more qualified to understand and deal with those problems than the "experts." You've LIVED it; they've only read about it. Think of yourself as the translator for your children--you are translating between their world and the world of the "neurotypicals...
  14. Hi, MeganMichelle, welcome aboard! Our resident expert on your subject is right now with her 15-month-old daughter 2 days after open-heart surgery. If you can hang in there another week or two, I bet she'd get back to you soon. In the meantime, try a search on this site for all posts by "TCA"--she's started some threads that will give you a lot of info...
  15. Wow. You have been through the wringer, haven't you You might want to try a trial gluten-free, casein-free diet (if you're not already doing so) and see if it makes a difference. Arm yourself in advance with tried-and-true kid-successful recipes from people on this board who have already been through it and order some decent wheat-free bread on-line...
  16. Hang in there, Tanya. The first 24 hours after Michael came off the ventilator were very uncomfortable for him. He was wanted to nurse, but they said he had to keep down either formula or apple juice before he was allowed to nurse (the idiots--I told them that apple juice gave him diarrhea and formula gave him terrible tummyaches, and they wouldn't even...
  17. I'm confused, too--a bowl of oatmeal (eaten before I knew it was a no-no) brought my DH rash back (but much milder), while a WHEAT Chinese dumpling caused no discernable reaction whatever. Also, my bread/wheat cravings disappeared completely after 2 weeks gluten-free, but I am STILL craving Corn Chex and Corn Pops big-time (but I'm not craving regular...
  18. Hey, if there are any computer geniuses here, how about making Rachelville the next Runescape?
  19. We sure as heck are doing more research on this than the medical community! I was thinking that, for those of us with very milld, late-onset symptoms, who didn't grow up doubled over in pain, that yes, gluten overload DOES cause celiac, genes or no genes. Heck, for all we know, all people might have a set trigger point for gluten consumption--go over...
  20. My son's Asperger's symptoms overlap quite a bit with ADD/ADHD. He seems able to handle gluten and casein, but what works wonders for him is a scheduled day, with lots of exercise (bike rides after school, Tae Kwon Do twice a week, etc) scheduled in. Swinging on the swing set for ten minutes before school makes a big difference in his day. When he was...
  21. Thank you, Vincent, for keeping us updated and for keeping such a watchful eye on "our" Tanya and Megan!
  22. Tanya, if you want to ask the other mom (the one who has been there for 52 days) for her first name and her child's, we could add her to our prayers...does she know about caringbridge.org? I'm SO glad things are going so well with Megan! I remember when Michael came out of post-op into the PICU--I barely noticed the tubes and machines--my CHILD was...
  23. Tarnalberry, you make a lot of sensible points. But. (There's always a but!) I think Wikipedia IS good for looking up things that might be controversial--it's just possible that they might have the only accurate version, even if it's not the ACCEPTED version...On the other hand, I don't think we can quote Wikipedia as Gospel Truth (not meaning to offend...
  24. Hi, Kokopelli, nice to meet you! I had a so-so experience with McKnight's Bravo--we will always go back to Cranberry from now on. Maybe we can have a Pittsburgh mini-celiac-convention there! Well, at least lunch!
  25. Oh, come on, if we're going to talk about accurate information, it's not like we can point to the American medical professionals as shining examples of accuracy! Look how many of us on this board have been given info from our doctors that was totally wrong (as in, "You can eat wheat, you don't have celiac disease, it's all in your head, doesn't matter what...
