ARCHIVED Shouldn't Celiac3270 Be Back On Line By Now?
debmidge replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
celiac3270, Wishing you a speedy and uneventful (except for happiness and joy) recovery. Rest, then let us know how you are doing. (By the way, which hospital were you at for this surgery?) Debbie Midge -
From my experience with inept Gastro doctors alone, it would behoove someone who knows what celiac is to place a Celiac pamplet/brochure in the waiting room of every doctor's office. I am not hoping that the patients read it, I am hoping that the doctor reads it! The expression "nothing ventured, noting gained" comes to mind here. By at least...

ARCHIVED How Do You Make Then Understand What It Is!
debmidge replied to roddi's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Roddi Your friends/family reaction is a common one. There's only one way to correct them and that is to provide the education materials that describes celiac and the ramifications of not eating gluten free. Although that won't guarantee that they "get it in their heads correctly." My husband was healthy when I met him. Three years later he... -

ARCHIVED Found This On Another Message Board
debmidge replied to stef-the-kicking-cuty's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I hate getting into situations where it's a "can you top this" game. Almost got lassoed into one with same allergies vs. celiac situation with the Customer Service Rep at Fiber Choice when I called to find out if they were gluten free - I asked if gluten free could be written on their label, and she was a snot nose and mentioned that nut allergies were... -
ARCHIVED Cakes
debmidge replied to celiac3270's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
RE: Duncan Hines Cream Cheese frosting In the past, I've blended a small amount of real cream cheese in with the Duncan H. brand. I am sure that it'll work for you if you use gluten-free cream cheese. It'll put the cream cheese flavor back into the frosting and give you a little extra to lick out of the bowl! -
ARCHIVED Canola Oil
debmidge replied to deener's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
what makes canola oil questionnable? -
I think one of your sellling points (a pro) would be that your food is fresh, natural and a low amount of artificial flavoring or colorings. That alone would lure some people in.

That hospital dietician story about the white vs wheat was funny, but in all seriousness, if I were the hospital I'd check her credentials and demote her anway for that. She's a liability to the hospital.

ARCHIVED Anyone Else Get This When Going Out To Eat?
debmidge replied to 3kbab's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
correction to above: bread would ruin the results on Atkins (you can't lose weight eating carbs and if you are counting your carbs and didn't know you were eating carbs, you'd gain weight back if you lost it thru low carb. On low carb, once you've lost your weight, you are allowed a certain number of grams of carbs a day to keep the weight off. So... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else Get This When Going Out To Eat?
debmidge replied to 3kbab's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
My opinion, for what it's worth 1) All food servers must have a state license to do their job. The training in order to be licensed must be in food prep, sanitary practices and absolutely including knowledge of food allergies and special medical diets (not diets to lose weight), but diets for celiac disease, diabetes, etc. I am in the insurance industry... -
ARCHIVED Questions About Two Products
debmidge replied to jmengert's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi all My husband has celiac disease, not me, but I make sure that my products are gluten-free: haircare and make up. It's good to find out in advance what is gluten-free or not. I certainly do not want to inadvertently glutenize (I love that word, got it from someone else's post) him. -
Red, Please clarify: time of diagnosis even if it's years after manifest of symptoms or at the exact time the celiac disease started?

ARCHIVED Obstacles Faced By Celiacs
debmidge replied to ResearcheringCeliac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'd have to agree that eating outside of your own home is the greatest obstacle. The pitfalls of this are, but I am sure I will be missing some type of instance: 1) Kids at school who are celiac can't eat snacks brought in by others , in general unless they are fruit or prepackaged made by a company that are considered gluten-free. Little ones might... -
ARCHIVED Supplements For Celiacs

Was Beano declared as gluten free? I seem to recall it wasn't...... -
Hi all when putting together my own anniversary dinner, I was turned down by 2 large wedding type catering halls as they could not accomodate 1 gluten-free dinner (my husband). The last place agreed was dismayed when I told them that my husband would bring his own bread. The catering organizer asked "well, how much of the bread is he bringing? And...

ARCHIVED Gf Hair Care Products
debmidge posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Need brand name suggestions for shampoo, conditioner (not shampoo w/conditioner), spray on conditioner (for when hair is drying and needs to be detangled) ....thanks. -
Jessica: There must have been a miscommunication somehow....no one is throwing a fit over wedding food. Some of us just mentioned that due to logistical matters and the degree of how ill the celiac is, we decline wedding, christening, etc. invitations if it appears that going will make one ill. That's not the same as demanding special food or taking...

ARCHIVED How Do You Kill Gluten?
debmidge replied to kactuskandee's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
In thinking this out, the temperatures of deep fat frying even isn't high enough as celiacs cannot eat fried chicken using wheat bread crumbs...so obviously the wheat/oat/barley/rye would have to be burned into a crisp to render it useless and what would be the fun of eating burned gluten anyway? At that point it wouldn't be edible. My mom in law thought... -
RE: Vitamin B deficiency anemia Does anyone have any experience with this condition? I believe that this is what is keeping my husband from gaining weight (actually he's still losing weight after being gluten-free for over a year now). Does anyone have a deficiency of the "intrinsic factor"? Thanks for any info anyone can offer. Deb ...

ARCHIVED Breadman Ultimate
debmidge replied to loregon's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Let me clarify something, the Breadman does not have a special cycle for gluten-free bread; my post gives you impression that it does. I use this machine for gluten-free bread only, no gluten bread. Anyway, I just programmed it for a mix and rise according to my choice. -
ARCHIVED Breadman Ultimate
debmidge replied to loregon's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Loregon I have same machine and it's good to work with. I really have only one program in it and it's for the Gluten Free Pantry Mix bread. The directions are to Select a program and I use white bread choice, then I keep hitting no and yes to increase or decrease minutes. I've eliminated most of the first kneading cycle to 16 minutes, I increase... -
