  1. Ursula, This list was great!! I'm gonna print it and mail it to my girlfriends who are still teaching. They'll love it, too!! I've worked with so many teachers who look at kids with AS, and many other issues, as pains-in-the @**. This would certainly give them some food for thought now wouldn't it??!!. It makes you wonder who really doesn't ...
  2. Very often there is no explanation or direct cause for developmental delays. The types of delays that our kids have are neurologically based, however if there's been no trauma to the brain it's almost impossible to give an answer as to "why?". There is a genetic component to sensory related issues, though. I feel your pain!! Over a year ago...
  3. What a riot!! Hubby and I have been down to Cape May a couple of times and love it. We went there on our mini-moon...we got married during the school year so I couldn't take off. We're hoping to get down there at Christmas time one year; it's supposed to be beautiful. We've done a couple different B&Bs and have liked all but one. How accomodating...
  4. I'm so glad you stopped avoiding this thread. You're always such a great source of information and have so much insight!
  5. Oh, no doubt about it! With all that I've written, I'm sorry I wasn't as clear about that. Zachary LOVES input through his feet...he asks for us to rub cream into his feet! (He sounds like me!) When he gets a little "stimmy" he'll rub his feet on the floor to get the input. We always let him run around barefoot both inside and out...he just loves it...
  6. Nicole- "Crashing" is also a hallmark for SID. I would discuss all of these things with your son's OT or look for an OT who is trained and certified in evaluating/Dx SID. It certainly can't hurt. Our insurance did not cover Zachary's OT eval so we had to pay out of pocket...$300. Believe it or not, this was quite reasonable and she is fabulous. I...
  7. Nicole, I agree; we can't ever give up hope!! I am surprised, though, that the OT didn't "flag" your little guy while he was receiving EI services. Did she recommend any type of activites (ie, sensory diet) for your son that would help minimize the sensory behaviors? Licking and being defensive to tastes and textures are hallmarks of SID. My...
  8. The severity of symptoms and longevity of symptoms is truly specific to each person. SID can look a little different for each person, but the general undercurrent is present in everyone. It is exclusively about the inability to organize and process the sensory input within our environment that we continuously receive. Certainly a child who experiences...
  9. SID is *not* a mental health issue or disorder. It can certainly have an impact on a person socially and academically, but it is not comprable to a Dx such as BiPolar Disorder or Depression. SID has a neurological etiology that is directly related to the central nervous system's inability to effectvely process and organized sensory stimuli. It also is...
  10. Sensory Integration Dysfunction (SID) is the inability to simultaneously organize and process (integrate) sensory stimuli (auditory, visual, tactile, vestibular and proprioceptive) and execute the input in an appropriate manner. Senosry stimulus that may seem benign to us can be amplified or exagerated 100 fold for someone with SID. For example, a washing...
  11. I'm just curious if anyone has a child specifically with sensory issues and/or ADD in conjunction with gluten intolerance/Celiac Disease. My apologies if something of this nature has previously been posted!! Thanks for your input.
  12. I couldn't help but truly laugh out loud and read this to my husband...then he laughed out loud! We understand this all too well. Zachary is 3 1/2 and also has a "high level of energy". He isn't hyperactive but does frequently move about the room he's in. His biggest issue is attention and distractability which is the root of the "high level of energy...
  13. Another great idea!!
  14. This happened to me awhile ago and I was a little concerned. I googled "green poop" and everything came back food/food color related. The culprit for me were blue corn tortilla chips.
  15. Great idea!! My kids will eat anything so I'm gonna try it this week!
  16. I just started giving my 3.5 year old popcorn and it's only a little at a time while we're watching him. (Some may think I'm a little neurotic with that but you know how little ones love to stuff food!!) I, personally, would not send it in to your son's preschool due to the chocking hazard. I'm also a teacher and have to think about stuff like that as...
  17. I thought this was a great idea and wrote to her tv show. I'm not looking to make an appearance on her show (I honestly don't need the extra 10 lbs. ), but I did want to seize this opportunity. So many people love Rachel Ray...this would be an awesome "Celiac Experience". I would like to see someone who does have an "offical" Dx or a child with a Dx...
  18. -gluten-free Pantry makes GREAT brownie and chocolate cake (cupcake) mixes... I just sprinkle mine with powdered sugar instead of frosting. I promise they'd never know. -Mi-Del Animal Crackers -popcorn (don't know about kids' ages) -Tings, Fruity Booty or Pirate's Booty (Robert's American Gourmet) -cheddar cheese shapes (Kraft??) and turkey pepperoni...
  19. I started taking Valerian root extract (pill form) a couple of weeks ago because I've been sleeping terribly for the past year. I have trouble falling asleepbut staying asleep is an even bigger problem. I am not an herbal-remedy kinda person. In fact, I'm not into taking pills or medication unless I really need to, but I can't tell you how much better...
  20. YUMMY!
  21. Mexican Pizza Combine: 1 can vege refriend beans 3/4 salsa ( I LOVE Gold's) 1-2 T fresh cilantro-chopped -On a large tortilla, layer a coating of bean mixture, thinly sliced chicken, salsa and cheddar cheese. -Spray bottom of stone/cookie sheet with oil and bake at 350 until cheese is melted -Top with shredded lettuce, avacado and jalapenos....
  22. My son's preschool doesn't provide snacks due to allergies, special diets and such. So in addition to his "safe foods", I also send in a box of popsicles to be kept in the freezer as well as a couple of frozen cupcakes. I haven't had any problems with Zachary's school concerning his diet. Can you believe school is starting?? Zachary starts tomorrow...
