  1. MDI = multiple daily injections. With the types of insulin out there and everyone is so individual - you can use pumps, mixed insulin ect. My son uses Lantus (also called Glargine) (a background insulin with no peak), Humulin N (intermediate)= N, and Humalog(rapid) = H - the rapid insulins are used in MDI. Example of a couple of approaches: N and H in...
  2. Metabolic acidosis is a medical emergency. Although acute severe diarrhea can cause this electrolyte imbalance - it usually occurs in infants and the very young. It is frequent in diabetic ketoacidosis - which can be precipitated by diarrhea in the diabetic patient. Chronic diarrhea is annoying and certainly the underlying cause must be diagnosed but it...
  3. Thank-you - I was hoping others would see the message and feel not so alone. Ursula - I notice you too have Aspergers - it has been the introduction of Aspergers in our family that has helped me grow so much. It pains me when I see parents desperately seeking a "cure" for something I see as a gift. I absolutely introduce therapies and ideas for my daughter...
  4. This is an interesting thread, I would like to add my experience if I may. My children's GI doctor is a board member for the Canadain Celiac asscoiation. His research on celiac in first degree relatives has been published in medical articles. I have diabetes /hypothyroidism/pernicious anemia. Daughter is Asperger/hypothyroid/celiac. Son is diabetic/celiac...
  5. It is great that you care so much and want to learn about Celiac. If there is a local celiac chapter, you can get info from them. Her parents have been in charge fo her health for her entire life, they are probably a bit scared knowing that she is an adult and may experiment with her new found freedom in the grown up world. Speaking from a parents view (and...
  6. Hi, I am relatively new here too, I wrote this for our church bulletin. It is for those who have beliefs and may have been questioning the fairness in celiac disease or any other diagnosis for that matter. It helped me have an answer for those that seemed to want to blame God. I know that posts can be misinterpreted because we do not see each other face to...
  7. I am so excited - Terra Cotta just opened their bakery in Nanton last Friday - Nanton is about 80 km south of Calgary. They plan on shipping the products to Calgary from here but will have stuff available for sale "over the counter". I imagine they chose Nanton cause real estate is way cheaper here. I DID most of my shopping at Planet Organic in the SW (a...

  9. We went to Disneyland (California) last year. It was GREAT! There is a fellow by the name of "Chef Chris", he manages all the chefs on the Disney land site - he can tell you where to eat, what to ask for etc. You can get his number from Disneyland Hotel or a travel agent should be able to find it, if oyuleave message - he gets back to you quickly, have pen...
  10. I would suggest you do see the doctor. The reason doctors hate it when patients bring in stuff off the internet is that the patient has diagnosed themselves and one doctor told me "then I try and get a symptom list from the patient and they are reading off the sheet". I was then told how, what may seem like insignificant symptoms to the patient are not reported...
  11. The clinical signs vary so much, that is why many people go years before being diagnosed. I can only tell you what I saw change in the week after diagnosis and starting gluten-free diet, and what I found out was related afterwards. My son - stopped bedwetting, joint pains (previously told were "growing pains") went away, stomach aches stopped, gained weight...
  12. I agree with previous poster. My son would like to respond as well, he is 11 and has Type 1 diabetes plus celiac; here he is: Hi! I have diabetes and celiac too. It's actually good that you gained weight. It means your body is absorbing the proper nutrients again and becoming healthy. Your sugars may be all over the place because the same thing happened...
  13. Thought I'd add my thoughts.. I am a mom with two children whom I have passed on the genes that cretae some health issues. Having children i sa personal decision may people undertake wthout any thought whatsoever. Dealing with allergies or health issues makes us more aware of life and all that can happen. When we first discussed having chidlren, I had one...
  14. It does get easier with time, I found I was in a "fog" for a few months, trying to absorb all the info, recognize gluten in all its forms....find the stores that carry gluten-free mixes, or stuff like quinoa. Dealing with cooking failures and finding recipes/food the kids liked. The kids have a really positive attitude, but that didnt develop overnight...
  15. I find the kids' school uses food rewards etc, then there is birthday parties, camping with friends - everywhere a group is gathered - we want to hand out fun treats for kids. Nothing wrong with that, but as we all know - it means extra planning for parents and occasionally disappointment in the kids with food allergies/celiac/diabetics to name a few. For...
  16. I have never written about this before - probably becasue now I do have competent doctors who listen but not before I told off a neurologist and switched pediatricians. I have survived medication errors, residents who thought they knew more than nurses and a doctor who missed classic hypothyroidism in a child until myxedema had developed. Where do I start...
  17. Good site Fiddle Faddle! Wow, I have ven more respect for my daughter's endocrinologist now! She relies on hpw my duaghter feels, is doing etc rather than just the blood tests. The Dr sat down with me when my daughter was diagnosed at the age of 4 (TSH was sky high at 965). She explained that people with thyroid problems have ranges of normal that they...
  18. There is an excellent site about Autoimmunity / the diseases etc at John's Hopkns site: http://autoimmunity.pathology.jhmi.edu/aboutcenter.cfm I have a son (11 yr) diabetic/celiac - diabetes diagnosed Sept 2003, celiac confirmed by biopsy Aug 2004. A daughter (13yr) diagnosed hypothyroid age 4, Hypotonia at birth, Aspergers at age 7, Kawasaki June ...
  19. I have had the experience with my children. Picture this - kids havent been diagnosed that long, still figuring some things out. Extended family members decide we should have dinner out at a local pancake house, being new to this at the time - I think there will be eggs or fruit, some choices at least for the kids. On top of that my son and I are both insulin...
  20. after several visits to the doctor, for neurologic symptoms... headaches, fatigue, sudden numbness on one side of the face and scalp, drooling on one side, dizziness, dropping things, stumbling, tingling extremities, forgetfulness, klutzy... you name it.. it was initailly blamed on my diabetes. The GP gave me a B12 shot - ALL the symptoms went away. I now...
  21. yeah it is icky to think about - they could probably diagnose the type of worm by you bringing in a stool sample rather than have you wait for one to "show up". That's how we do it in dogs/cats/horses - the stool will have eggs in it and eggs are distinctive to the type of worm(sorry another gross thing) but the sooner you are treated - the sooner they are...
  22. do you mean roundworm or pinworm? Ringworm is actually a fungus that cause a skin infection and the lesion is ring shaped. Pinworms are more common than you think.
  23. This is a thought provoking thread. The comment about Jean dodds caught my eye since I am in the veterinary field too. Jean Dodds is well respected and her info is accurate. Trying to change vets to NOT to give annual vaccines to pets is a huge battle right now, but that's another topic (the animal health aspect of vaccines and the many articles written about...

    ARCHIVED Can You Beat This

Not as strange as oyu might think, my husband isa vet. We have had to send info with clients to take to their physicians about psittacosis, salmonella, tonsilittis, and pinworms to name a few. Physicians told this family that the dog was a source of pinworms for their kids (pinworms are very speices specific and dogs DONT get pinworms) and to get rid of...
  25. Wow, someone with common ground, myself and both children are in the class of : PAS 3. The pediatrician has even said - she feels that subsets and variants of PAS occur in children that dont fit the current description of PAS 1, 2 or 3. Sad that we can relate on medical issues. My experience with "adult patient oriented" doctors is similar to yours. The...
