  1. I use Harvest brand also, the kids have never had any problems. Grimms and Freybe have all sort of sliced meat, pepperoni and smokies etc that are gluten-free (and labled as such). I tried top dog but the kids had unsettled tummies afterwards - not sure if cc or just the other ingredients. Who really knows what's in a hot dog anyway! * and I am in...
  2. It is a tough place to be. In our family - it is the kids who are celiacs, we dont eat out often but I make the effort to find places and teach them how to eat safely, to not be shy about speaking to the chef. We went to Disneyland and it was great experience all around. Correct me if I am off track - it is hard to judge online but the picture you paint...
  3. Ursula, I find I like to read all your responses to various threads and posts. You are direct and have loads of information and insight. Perhaps I find it easy to read your posts because you sound very much like my daughter in how you see the world, and I am always trying to learn more about Aspergers /Aspies from those who know best - the Aspies. I read...
  4. This thread is very interesting. I am learning more as I read, thank you Ursula for your insight into the Aspie mind! The comments about the school system are so true, but I do feel lucky that in our small rural school, the teachers were willing to accomodate a different learning style. In grade one my D was labeled as mentally deficient and ADD, based...
  5. Shadow Aspergers, fits my oldest to a tee. But, I think at 25, she doen't need to have a label. She is a college graduate, in Bio-Chem. and loves what she does in the lab that she works in full time....testing pharm. before FDA approval. I think the label isnt so important as having a guide to understanding the person with AS or shadow forms of...
  6. I found this on a link from an Asperger site. I havent read the book, but I too feel like shadow of my daughter sometimes, I understand her better than anyone else, I hate crowds, make social mistakes, hve only 1 close friend. I hate even good natured teasing cause to me it just seems mean even though everyone else seems to think its funny - I sometimes ...
  7. A good thread! My daughter has Aspergers and it is always helpful to hear from adults with it because sometimes my daughter cannot articulate what her world is like. Her social skills and abilities to deal with diffculties improved noticably on the gluten-free diet. She still prefers to work alone rather than in a group because - in her words "the other kids...
  8. This is the same article with the full text is available at the link provided. I found it interesting too, esp since my daughter had severe migraines - she would stagger down the hall and beg me to turn out the lights - only they were already off! gluten-free diet stopped the migraines. .....It often is associated with the presence of antiendomysial and...
  9. Regular skittles are gluten-free. The Skittles Littles are NOT. They are mini skittles in a tube like container. Dont ask me why the company would do that, but they contain wheat. I'm in Canada so maybe its a canadian product
  10. Well, my daughter ended up needing an appendectomy a couple of weeks ago. In hindsight she possibly had symptoms of chronic appendicitis - but I thought she was being glutened by cross contamination some where. She had tummy aches that would come and go, nausea, mild fevers - some of the symptoms she had before she was diagnosed celiac. Then things got...
  11. I have had friends bend over backwards - finding out what my kids could eat.. and family members who thought it would make holiday meals so stressful on the host that they made a huge deal out of gluten-free gravy and once they tasted it and my gluten-free stuffing - they were surprised that it tasted like the "real" thing...?!? If talking is hard because...
  12. I am sure that this company can help you. They are based in Alberta but ship their stuff wherever. Under Products they have the email address and list of products available, if you scroll to near the bottom, they list brown rice flour - you can ask them if they make super fine. Open Original Shared Link Hope this helps
  13. Tio reply to Laura's post form way back. These are some sites about celiac and Irish setters. My personal belief is that it is in a lot of breeds, not just the setter. Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link
  14. Merlin, I copied and pasted the disclaimer from curezone because I found the site to contain contradictory statements. One one hand they say how safe and effective the treatments are and another says it could kill you. I mistrust anyone (mainstream doctor or alternative medicine practitioner) who makes blanket statements about treatments with no studies...
  15. One thing that should be noted is that anyone with other medical conditions should proceed with caution. Yes, epsom salts is a laxative. Diabetics on insulin would not be able to do this. Someone with kidney disease and/or heart disease should not do this. Some taking other medication orally should not do this - the laxative effect speeds intestinal contents...
  16. Yes, my daughter got them all the time before we knew she was celiac. She hasnt had one since we started gluten-free diet 2 years ago
  17. I am frustrated but realize this is beyond my control. If any of you have a suggestion about my approach - I would like to hear from you. My sister in-law has a boy (13) she is the sister of my husband, both our children are celiacs (plus more). Sister inlaw complains about her son having stomach-aches, headaches and fatigue, esp after eating crakers or...
  18. It is interesting how many "cures" are out there and not one of them seems to be making headlines for actually accomplishing what they say.. as in no proof.... only subjective testimonials. I have been told (by non diabetics of course) that I wont need insulin if I drink Goji juice. I have been scolded by people I barely know (if they find out I have diabetes...
  19. Read this article and see if she will try gluten-free to help her liver. The abstract: A variety of hepatic and biliary tract disorders may complicate the clinical course of celiac disease. Some of these have been hypothesized to share common genetic factors or have a common immunopathogenesis, such as primary biliary cirrhosis, primary sclerosing cholangitis...

    ARCHIVED Thyroid

No problem, I just wanted to clarify that in some types of thyroid conditions (esp in children) - you cant wean them off or use vitamins. I am not as familiar with the hyperthyroid forms and post radiation treatment where that could be an option. I guess with the cyberworld where some might cling to the hope of getting off meds, I like to be clear about the...
  21. yes! my son was 10 when he was diagnosed with celiac, he had been a chronic bedwetter and the family doc said "oh he'll grow out of it, its common in boys". Well lo and behold, within 2 months of the diagnosis and eating gluten-free, he was dry every night!! We were all thrilled as there is nothing worse than waking up cold and wet - esp when you are 10...
  22. I use it lots! I add water since the kids say they liked it better than when I added milk. I make hot dog buns or hamburger buns with it. Best to make it and use it same day - awesome when fresh - not so great after day or when frozen. The dough is like really thick cake batter - it spreads - so I use tin foil to make "circles" the size I want the buns...
  23. Yes, merlin23 you have your beliefs. The liver is a fliter - you are correct. So are the kidneys and the spleen. The bone marrow and genetics of celiac disease have been proven by mainstream medicine. You choose not to believe in that - - I do believe in it. Autoimmune disease is complex. You made the statement: That line about the immune system...
  24. light colored stool along with pain in the upper right abdomen should be red flag for your doctors to run a liver function panel. Liver problems are not uncommon in celiacs. The link I include is a good article but very "medical" terms. Open Original Shared Link It can take several months to years for the body to repair after starting gluten-free diet...
