  1. Some campnies do indeed list everything (Kraft does) and others list just the top 8 allergens. Usually the companies make it clear but you should always ask for certain. Barley is indeed an occasional concern, but a whole lot less so than wheat. I'm pretty certain that when it's malt vinegar it must say so, but even if that's not so, malth vinegar tastes...
  2. Coffeemate is indeed gluten-free. The Snapple information from two years ago is now old. We finally discovered that Snapple was saying those drinks had gluten because they had CORN gluten. All Sna[[les are gluten-free. richard
  3. My local Kroger ALWAYS cleans a slicer for me, even during the middle of the business day. I'm sure they'd do it for a 60 pound order. Just talk to the manager of the deli. richard
  4. You have to call the company that makes the chips. richard
  5. "You sound like a good Hillary Clinton style democrat." Just in case you were serious with this comment, this is NOT a political board. If you want to bash the Clintons you can go play with the folks at Freerepublic. And for Bush bashing there's alway Democratic Underground. richard
  6. It's been my experience that malt vinegar is much more expensive and therefore very likely to be used rather than the cheap white or distilled vinegar. But I did just learn something new about Starbucks coffee -- there are two flavors of of their fancier drinks (frappuccinos I think -- one is mint mocha chip) that use chocolate chips that have gluten....
  7. Some hot fudges do indeed contain gluten (I think Dairy Queens might) but fudge ice creams in general seem OK. Bottom line -- ice cream, as long as you avoid the obvious -- is really a pretty safe treat for us. richard
  8. The product information we get -- whether it's from this board, support groups, other people with celiac, or even the companies -- is always something of a crapshoot. I know I've given wrong info. CSA is known to give out bad info. I tend to rely on the companies, although there are exceptions. richard
  9. The company web site has a nutrition link that lists allergens, including wheat. Would not think barley, rye or oats would be a problem. wisesnacks.com richard
  10. I can look back and see that I had celiac as a kid and then for a few years in my 40s. My only real symptoms were DH, which I kept under control with dapsone, and a little fatigue. Then suddenly I was nearly dead and in the hospital for 11 days because of malnutrition. I missed 10 weeks of work and wasn't really right for nearly a year. This came on very...
  11. Almost all regular ice creams are gluten-free unless they have obvious ingredients like cookies, brownies, cookie dough, Oreos, etc. For Ben and Jerry's, Breyers, Baskin Robbins and Popsicle all you have to do is read the ingredients. Turkey Hill, Edy's, and Dreyers have gluten-free lists that include most of their flavors. richard
  12. Unless it's malt vinegar you needn't worry. Never heard of a commercial place (or any other place) using bread to clean a grinder. If they did, they'd be fools not to clean the bread out. Few people want bread crumbs in their coffee. richard
  13. The broths in tuna are generally vegetable broths. I've never found a plain canned or packaged tuna with gluten. richard
  14. It's a USDA law that applies to fresh, raw meats (including frozen ones). This law has actually been around for years. For other foods you do still need to check on "flavors." BTW, this information has been confirmed by several people (including myself) with the USDA. richard
  15. If Starbucks makes you ill it's something other than gluten. Only one Starbucks drink has gluten, and that's because brownies are added when it's mixed. Regular unflavored coffee is always gluten-free. Flavored coffee is almost always gluten-free. richard
  16. This is not an unusual reaction to going gluten-free. Watch that weight gain, though! richard
  17. Celiac is, of course, a possibility and you should be tested. But for the anxiety have you ever tried either a medication or learning relaxation techniques? I know some people object to the medications, but after experiencing a severe personal loss, Zoloft is the only reason I'm semi-functional right now. richard
  18. The USDA requires that anything that adds nutritional value (this includes wheat and barley) to raw meat be clearly listed. Usuually these broths are just made from the meat they're in. I've yet to see a unmarinated, unspiced raw chicken, turkey, or pork that has gluten. Cans of tuna also have broth, but it's a vegetable broth. richard
  19. Good luck. However, the alcohol in the yogurt is distilled and therefore should be gluten-free. richard
  20. Sensitivity after going gluten-free depends on the person. I never have gotten more sensitive. richard
  21. I know some people have soy allergies but where did you get the information that 50 percent of people with celiac have it? I've never seen that before. Seems high. richard
  22. IF citric acid indeed comes from wheat sometimes it is so rare that most consider it no threat at all. It is on the safe list at this very site (celiac.com). I'm not exactly sure what that site means about maltodextrin not being regulated, but I do know that it's not true that it MUST be made from corn. What IS true is that when it's made from wheat, the...
  23. Never heard of a whole bean coffee, decaf or otherwise, with gluten. In fact, I've never geard of any plain coffee, decaf or otherwise, with gluten. It's possible something about the decaffenating process for that particular brand disagrees with you. richard
  24. Don't know the man and cheese you tried but if you overcook gluten-free noodles most turn to mush very quickly. You must watch them closely. richard
  25. Green Giant is a Gerneral Mills company and General Mills will clearly list any gluten. So, as the person on the phone told you, all you need to do is read the ingredients. If it doesn't list wheat, rye, barley or oats, it's gluten-free. richard
