  1. Vodka is made from many things, potatoes being one of the least common (and most expensive). Corn is fairly common. I do know that some people don't believe that distilling renders wheat, rye or barley harmless. However, grain scientists who have studied it, ever major celiac organization in the U.S. and Canada (CSA still sort of waffles), and the national...
  2. "You *will* become more sensitive as your gut heals." This simply is not true for everybody. I've been gluten-free for more than three years and have not become more sensitive at all. I know others who are the same. richard
  3. Maybe it's just me, but if I were following a diet that tells me my blood type says I should get most of my protein from soy and beans, but I'm allergic to soy and beans give me terrible gas, I'd have to wonder of there weren't something wrong with the basic concept of that diet. richard
  4. Distilled alcohol made from wheat is gluten-free. It doesn't have to be made from corn. I've looked and looked and have yet to find a vanilla or vanilla extract that isn't gluten-free. Kroger's is gluten-free. richard
  5. Almost none. Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles. A handful of store brands. Not Rice Krispies. Virtually all malt or malt flavoring comes from barley (although a tiny percentage comes from other grains). richard
  6. Think red meat. richard
  7. Unfortunately, Lowell's book contains many, many errors. Heck, she even tells us it's OK to take meat off of bread and eat it. She also tells us that Tootsie Rolls are not gluten-free when EVERTHING made by that company is gluten-free. I just called Pfizer and BOTH Zoloft and Zithromax are gluten-free. In fact, virtually ALL of Pfizer's medications are...
  8. Most people I know think it's bull. The thing that's convincing to some people is that EVERYBODY is going to find some part of it that applies to them. When they find that part they think, "Wow, this guy really nailed that." But they forget about all the parts that didn't work out so well. richard
  9. This doesn't help you now but call Kroger Monday and ask them. They're very good about this. All the fruit snacks I've ever seen checked have been gluten-free, but can't tell you about the Kroger ones. richard
  10. We don't have Regal or AMC here but every time I have checked a theater the popcorn has been gluten-free. If the topping used at your theater is Flavocol (sp?), it is indeed gluten-free. You need to find out what they use and call the company. The oil and popcorn itself will be gluten-free, of course. richard
  11. I too have to wonder exactly how do we decide what is and isn't "playing god." Many currently accepted procedures would have been seen as playing god just 50 years ago. How does any individual know whether stem cell research is playing god or yet another tool god has given us to improve our lives? richard
  12. Malt vinegar is pretty much the only one we need to avoid. richard
  13. I've never heard of a peanut butter that isn't gluten-free. richard
  14. Kroger butter is gluten-free. I agree with Peter. Never found a real butter that has gluten. richard
  15. I eat food processed in a facility that has gluten but I think it is a VERY, VERY bad idea to eat anything that you know has been fried in contaminated oil. You absolutely do get gluten this way. richard
  16. Even if you remain paranoid about distilled vinegar, very little is actually made from wheat. That's why you do as you did, check with the company. richard
  17. Huggies, Luvs and Pampers wipes are gluten-free. I can't imagine wipes containing gluten. Scotch tape is not a concern. richard
  18. I think you'd be better off and safer finding a locally owned restaurant with a real chef than you would with a chain, even a chain with a gluten-free menu. Talk to the owner or chef ahead of time and go when they're not real busy. richard
  19. Blue Bunny will clearly list at least wheat. richard
  20. Anywhere from 30 minutes to 48 hours later. As you said, everyvbody is different. richard
  21. My two favorites are Sweet Baby Rays and Bone Suckin'. Neither is very sweet. richard
  22. Call Montgomery Regional and ask them. They had a group that was meeting every three months. I've got a call in to Lewis-Gale about their group. richard
  23. First let me say that I am NOT taking sides in any of this. That is NOT the purpose of this comment. Freedom of speech as we understand it in the U.S. means the government cannot abridge your right to speak out. It can't close down newspapers or outlaw books (although I see an astounding number of people who want books they don't like banned). "Freedom...
  24. Where are you? The only groups I know are at Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg and a new one at Lewis-Gale Foundation in Salem. I think this Thursday will be that group's second meeting (if they meet Thursday). I am hoping to remember to to call the foundation Wednesday to check on it. richard (in Roanoke)
  25. No gluten-free food list has every single gluten-free item out there. It's just not humanly possible. That's why you have to call companies or start learning which ones list gluten or wheat (all will be required to list wheat by January 1). The CSA list is basically compiled from contributions by CSA members. If nobody checked the L&P sauce or nobody...
