  1. This is the same thing as the question about whether distilling makes vinegar started from wheat gluten-free. Every thing I've seen said it does. I don't worry any more about vinegar (except malt vinegar) or distilled spirits. richard
  2. I have to agree that a week isn't nearly enough time to determine anything. richard
  3. But if gluten isn't the culprit how come all of my symptoms, including the DH I had for more than 20 years, went away when I quit eating gluten? Not that it matters, but I have gotten the flu shot every year (except this year) since I last got the flu 18 years ago. 18 years ago I did not get the flu shot and boy was I sick. richard
  4. If you don't get an answer call Pfizer. I know some of their products are gluten-free and they list corn starch, not just starch, in the inactive ingredients. richard
  5. I THINK most places will let you stay with your child at least until he or she is sedated, and probably the whole time. The procedure itself doesn't take more than 20 minutes, maybe not even that long. It takes different people different amounts of time to come out from under the sedation. richard
  6. If your daughter had symptoms that are improving there's really no use in doing celiac blood tests again this early. The fact that she's imrpoving means she's doing well, but if her blood levels were up in July, thery're unlikely to all be normal yet. And then you'll worry unnecessarily because they aren't normal. Unless the patient is not improving, there...
  7. I don't see any obvious problems but of course I can't guarantee anything. Would the manufacturer not answer at all or did they say something like "We don't put gluten in it but we can't guarantee our suppliers." If it's the latter, take the medication. It's gluten-free.
  8. There is one. Usually held in May. Open Original Shared Link richard
  9. At the Glide floss web site: Though we don
  10. You're right, Tiffany, but every time I've seen a gluten challenge dicussed it's been what I described. I guess she needs to ask her doctor. richard
  11. "I have been educating his friends also, and they try to make a pitt stop at Taco Bell when they are hanging out." You do know that the only thing that's gluten-free at Taco Bell are the beans and cheese. The tacos and the chips are NOT gluten-free. However, if he really needs a fast food place Wendy's, McDonald's, Burger King and Hardee's have a number...
  12. The ADA does cover celiac, at least in school settings. I would advise that you try the celiac forum at delphiforums, as there are several people there who have been through this. You'll have to register (free) to ask about it. You might have to take this directly to central administration. Open Original Shared Link I'll also go into my lecture mode...
  13. If your son is going for the biopsy he should continue eating gluten until after it's been done. richard
  14. The purpose of a gluten challenege is to officially diagnose you. The "challenge" is that you go back to eating gluten every day for up to three months with the idea that if you do have celiac you make yourself sick enough again that the tests come up positive. If you've been off gluten long enough, the blood tests and biopsy will be negative even if you...
  15. The U.S. has no standards at all for what gluten-free means. And even if they did the simple fact is that if you eat processed foods you take a chance of getting gluten. A recent study showed that 20 percent of foods that the manufacturers said weren't supposed to have gluten did in fact have measurable gluten. These are mainstream foods, not specialty gluten...
  16. My asymptomatic father was positive. My VERY symptomatic aunt was positive. This is, this aunt is on my mother's side. So I got it from both directions. richard
  17. It was as of two years ago and almost certainly would still be. I'd call Bayer instead of waiting for e-mail, which can take days. A quick warning: Bayer is one of those companies that will tell you whether or not they put in gluten and then they'll warn you they can't guarantee their suppliers. This is a legalistic CYA. If they tell you this about the...
  18. Some people do just have a problem with distilled vinegar -- or any kind of vinegar. richard
  19. Because of the distilling process, bourbon (and all other liquors) is gluten-free as long as they don't add gluten after distilling (I don't know of any that do). I know Jack Daniels and Jim Beam have also said they are gluten-free. richard
  20. I think the way Bob's marks its products is pretty clear. The ones with the gluten-free symbol are made in a gluten-free environment and the ones without aren't. richard
  21. Go to this page for more than you want to know about natural or lump charcoal. You can click on links to see brands. I've used Big Green Egg, the Whole Foods brand and another. Open Original Shared Link Walmart is more likely to carry lump charcoal during the spring and winter but my local hardware store always has it. "Regular" grocery stores might...
  22. Even if cooking in a pan you'll get fine residue on the food. Kingsford says, however, that charcoal burns at such a high heat the gluten is destroyed. I can't say whether this is true or not but even if some gets to the food it has to be minimal. I solve this by using natural charcoal, which is nothing more than charred wood. It burns better and you don...
  23. First, she must continue eating gluten. The biospy is done by the endoscopy and, yes, she'll be sedated. She should also get an amnesiac and shouldn't remember a thing. Ask the doctor how many samples he takes -- it should be 10 or more. richard
  24. Kraft is not telling you there's an allergen panel; they're telling you to read the ingredient list. In the case of gluten, if there is any it will be clearly listed as wheat, rye, barley, or oats. And I believe they do the same for the other seven top allergens (but with gluten they list ANY source of gluten). But there is no "allergen panel." IMO, Kraft...
  25. The only one I know anything about is something like 5 tests for $80. You can use each test just once, they test only to about 200 ppm, and don't work well on some things. Some people do use them but I've just never the value. richard
