ARCHIVED Pumpkin Whoopie Pies
jayhawkmom replied to Guhlia's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Oh YUM!!!!! Ya know, the Dean boys just did a show on the Food Network recently, (Road Tasted) where they visited a lady who made Whoopie Pies. I've been dying for one... and I'm going to have to make this recipe!!! =) -
ARCHIVED Do You Automatically Test Your Kids?
jayhawkmom replied to Tritty's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My 8 year old just tested positive, via bloodwork, after 2 previous negative tests. So, I think that even if they aren't showing signs and symptoms, since you are a positively diagnosed Celiac, it would be a really good idea to blood test every year. It might seem excessive...but I honestly believe that my the damage that is now "showing up" in my older child... -
ARCHIVED Advice About Going To An Allergist
jayhawkmom replied to Flor's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
What are some of the issues you are still having? My initial thoughts are.... eggs are extremely high allergens, as are peanuts - and often "nuts" can be cross contaminated with peanuts. Auto-immune is when your body attacks itself, in essence. Allergies are not autoimmune, with normal allergies, you have an IgE mediated response, where mast cells... -

ARCHIVED Low Body Temperature - Thyroid?
jayhawkmom replied to jayhawkmom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
No, not really. I mean... I'm cold a lot of times, but not so much that I walk around shivering. My hair isn't brittle in the least, and I'm usually exhausted because I have 3 kids... but not "sleepy exhausted" like I've expended more energy than I'm physically able to expend. What are some other symptoms?? Where's a good comprehensive, yet "dummy style... -
ARCHIVED What's Easier... The Whole Family Or One Person
jayhawkmom replied to mommalov's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi. I wanted to respond in a long drawn-out way... but my kiddo just woke up. So, I'm going to respond quickly by saying... we are also a family of 5, 2 adults and 3 kiddos - 8, 5, and 17 months. All of us are gluten free at home. Period. When we go out to eat, my husband can make a choice. We don't eat out much at all anymore... but when we do, we bring... -
There is something similar already out there: Open Original Shared Link Different, yet... same idea, same concept. Not as involved though! =)

ARCHIVED Low Body Temperature - Thyroid?
jayhawkmom replied to jayhawkmom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My actual thyroid test results have always been in "normal range." Every year as part of normal lab work, my thyroid is tested, as well as blood sugar (as I have a STRONG history of diabetes in my family), CBC, Cholesterol - all that stuff. Thus far, all of my testing has been "normal" based on the lab interpretation, not my doctors. I'm due to have... -
ARCHIVED Skip The Endoscopy!
jayhawkmom replied to cautiousC's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I honestly am so very sorry you are dealing with this. However, I don't think it's appropriate to advise everyone to avoid this procedure. It *may* be necessary to rule out other issues. In my daughter's case...the endoscopy may have saved her life. She had issues that went beyond Celiac, and we never would have known had we not gone through this. ... -
ARCHIVED Baby Endoscopy Results
jayhawkmom replied to gfgypsyqueen's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I can't help you much since my (little) kiddos are not yet in school. But, I do know that playdough is NOT gluten free. My baby (17 months) would SO put playdough in his mouth if given the opportunity. So, that's something I would be concerned about. My daughter will start kindergarten next year... and I'll be providing her lunches *always* - I don't trust... -
Oddly enough... everyone will know what you are talking about. The website automatically turns A-L-C-A-T into "Lame Advertisement."

Ok, I know this has been discussed before, but I'm curious - what does ones body temperature have to do with thyroid function?? Due to various reasons, I've been to the doctor more than my fair share this past month. I was just there yesterday, in fact, for the 3rd time this year. And, each and every time... my temperature has not been above 97.5 degrees...

ARCHIVED Having A Little Trouble...
jayhawkmom replied to Christy-Latchford's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Have you already had blood tests?? Do NOT begin a gluten free diet until *after* your biopsy. In the meantime... meats, fruits, veggies... none contain gluten. There are a million things you can cook without it. =) Best wishes!! -
ARCHIVED Test Results
jayhawkmom replied to e&j0304's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, it means that the person is reacting to gluten. But, it doesn't mean that they are reacting because of Celiac Disease. It could be gluten intolerance or other "leaky gut" issues. IgG is more sensitive, but less specific. IgA is less sensitive, but more specific. The total syrum IgA is elevated, and I have absolutely NO idea what that means at... -
ARCHIVED Getting Allergy Tested?
jayhawkmom replied to LoveBeingATwin's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Food allergies are kind of "hit and miss" with regards to testing. I've been tested a few times (for different reasons) and I always still end up on an elimination diet of some sort, to try and weed out the "truth" from the random false positives and false negatives. Just a few months ago I had a rather severe reaction to shrimp. I mentioned it to my allergist... -
ARCHIVED Am I A Kook?
jayhawkmom replied to JerryK's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Just for fun... I agreed with Carla! =) There are many studies that conclude that milk is only necessary for infants (of any species) unable to feed themselves. Once we get beyond that point.... it's not good for anyone. No one needs it, especially when we can get calcium from soooo many other sources. Could be the combination of the gluten intolerance... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Or Alcat Or ?
jayhawkmom replied to cathzozo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh, ok. I see. It seems that this type of test could give a whole lot of misinformation, however. If you have a lot of allergies to begin with....and your overall IgE is high due to increased sensitivity - it seems that you could potentially have blood reactions to a ton of things you aren't truly bothered by. Just my thoughts. I don't know a lot... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Or Alcat Or ?
jayhawkmom replied to cathzozo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you have been gluten free - you're blood tests will be negative. That's how the typical Celiac panel is run.... and the blood tests are only reliable when you are consuming gluten. If you are gluten free, your body will not be creating what the blood tests are looking for. -
ARCHIVED Medication... How Do You Know?
jayhawkmom replied to jayhawkmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm not sure he even took the gluten issue into the equation when writing the RX. However, now that I know that the brand we have IS gluten free, I'm left wondering why in the world she's so sick today. All I can think is... it's GOT to be CC from Wendy's. I do sincerely appreciate ALL the responses, and the next time we need an rx for anything... I will... -
ARCHIVED Medication... How Do You Know?

ARCHIVED Symptoms After Mess-up, How Long?
jayhawkmom replied to Curious and Determined's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
LOL! I didn't realize you were angry! =) But, it's ok! I think at one time or another, we all get angry about this!!! Can you think of anything else you might have eaten that could be causing problems?? What else did you eat besides the pancake? If you had scrambled eggs - there is often pancake batter IN the eggs to make them more fluffy. Is it possible... -
ARCHIVED Kix Cereal
jayhawkmom replied to Hearts's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am in the US - I have a box of Kix in my kitchen. There is NO wheat starch in it. Of course, since there are oats.... we don't eat them. This is a box I'd purchased before DS1's blood test results in mid January. -
ARCHIVED Symptoms After Mess-up, How Long?
jayhawkmom replied to Curious and Determined's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I understand your thinking. I do have external motivation though. My children. I have to be a good role model for them, in order for them to learn to stick with this diet. If I "cheat" they think it's ok for them to cheat. It's not ok. My exterior motivation stems from a strong desire to keep my children healthy. And, their health IS a tangible reward... -
ARCHIVED How Long?
jayhawkmom replied to Q1821's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That's very much dependent on the individual. Some people get better immediately. For some, it takes a while longer, depending on the amount of damage. However, with negative blood work - your damage (if any) is probably minimal. There are a lot of great reading materials available that go into great detail about gluten intolerance issues. My favorite... -
ARCHIVED When Can Kids Get Tested?
jayhawkmom replied to Q1821's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Ok... deep breath!! =) Since you don't have children yet... I would not be concerned with what age they could be tested. Who knows what is on the horizon for Celiac/Gluten Intolerance issues and testing. Things could change drastically in the next year... two years, three years down the road. In fact.... I certainly HOPE so!! If you know you have issues...
