  1. Hmmm, and I just shared a baked potato with him. Perhaps I should give that a try.... and just literally stick to the basics of the BRAT diet, for now. At least a couple days, to see if he clears up. If he does, I'll certainly cut out the potatoes. Are sweet potatoes nightshades too? (I know... I can click on your link, and I'm sure I will after I...
  2. That's good to know!!!
  3. Ok, I'm totally at a loss here. I don't even know where else to ask, because no one else I know has a clue of what it's like to be gluten free. My baby is also dairy, nut, soy, and egg free. Thus far, we've kept him pretty much on organic baby foods, until I am convinced that I'm not going to accidentally gluten him. He does have other things, but his...
  4. I haven't tried yet. I'm not sure I want to. She never seemed to like oats before, so I don't think it makes any difference to her. Now... my younger son, he might be a different story. I'll wait a while, but may eventually try. I do have some Scottish oatmeal in the cupboard. Dh loves the stuff.
  5. My daughter gets "the big D" and horrible tummy troubles within a few hours, from what I've noticed thus far. I'm doing my BEST to keep her as gluten free as I humanly possibly can. I made a huge error in judgment a few weeks ago at a restaurant that I assumed would be safe, since it has a gluten-free menu. Only... the mistake was due to an error on MY part...
  6. Woops.... my eyes are leaking now too!! What wonderful friends, you are certainly a lucky person to have such kind and caring friends. I just loved reading this!!!
  7. Are these enterolab results? If not... can you list what the normal reference ranges are?
  8. I honestly have no idea, but thus far... I've not found any Applebee's to have even a remote clue about gluten intolerance issues. So, we stopped going there a long time ago. That place was our family favorite.
  9. Yes...it IS beautiful!! I'd actually never been there until this past weekend. We took our children to a pumpkin patch near Lawrence, and afterward we headed to KU for a while. We left the campus and headed toward the lake. I'm a native of Western NY, where there is water everywhere.... and to move out here to KS has been weird. No water. Yet, our neighbors...
  10. I live in the Kansas City metro, on the Kansas side. It is beautiful here, the schools are great, but finding a new home under 150K is downright impossible. Even still, coming from California, I'm sure this area would seem very cost effective to you. I'm less than 10 minutes from the Missouri state line. I'm originally from NY, a little South of Buffalo ...
  11. How long have you been gluten free? If it's a long time... and unless you've eaten a TON of it... I highly doubt two days is going to give a positive blood result.
  12. Carla - I'm 36 now... and I worked there when I was 18-20, so it was 16 years ago - and it happened daily. That certainly doesn't mean that it still does, as laws have changed, safe food handling practices have changed. I'm just very gun-shy when it comes to my kiddo. I'd rather err on the side of caution. I have too many memories of the "flying burger" after...
  13. We did!! Our daughter is also food dye intolerant, or... at least, they bring out the beast in her, intolerance or not. Once gluten free, her overall mannerisms improved. So did her speech, oddly enough. Though, she's always been a very hyper child.... she was recently dx with adhd. She IS on medications because we've done all sorts of dietary adjustments...
  14. I avoid the chili too. Their chili is made from leftover hamburger meat, and sometimes... when they "mess up" an order, they'll remove the meat from the bun, and toss the meat into the bin to make chili the next day. (I used to work there right after high school) So, it's way possible that pieces of bun stuck to the meat can be a lovely little additive. No...
  15. My daughter had debilitating chronic stomach pain, failure to thrive (she was 29 lbs at a month before her 5th birthday), very short stature - she always looked pale and sickly. She never had much energy, she was very moody, she's never (to this day) had a "solid" bm, and the list goes on and on. Her GI said, "go ahead and try" to the gluten free diet...
  16. From what I understand... it "could" alleviate your obvious external symptoms....but it would STILL damage your insides. Not worth it, imho.
  17. My daughter could not gain weight. At a month before her 5th birthday, she was hovering around 29 lbs. I could not lose weight. I had a baby on 8.24.05 and just kept holding right on to that baby weight. Immediately after going gluten-free, my daughter started gaining, and growing. She's gained 5 lbs and grown 3 inches since June. I'm starting to...
  18. Well, I'm not much of a baker to begin with. But, since my daughter's dx, I've not dared open a bag of "normal" flour in my home. I don't want her to breathe it in and get sick. I thought perhaps I was being over cautious.... now I see that I'm pretty much the norm! At least, with regards to those who have already responded. =) Nope... I won't bake...
  19. This may be a dumb question... but are you positive that the person you spoke with understood the concept of a dedicated fryer? I ask that because I've encountered people who assume that it means that fries are cooked ONLY in that fryer, but give no thought to OTHER THINGS being fried in the same fryer. All the fries are done in one, so in their eyes... it...
  20. Nan - my IgG AB's were WAY high. But, everything else was high normal. I've had positive response to a gluten-free diet.... but DID have the endoscopy because my GI wasn't positive that the gluten issues were the ONLY issues I was dealing with. Had he said that villi damage was all he was looking for, I would never have had the scope/biopsy done. Turns...
  21. According to Culvers website, and allergen information... they are NOT gluten free. It says that they actually contain gluten. I was so happy to see your thread, because we have one of these places, so I thought it might be someplace new to take my kids. So, I went right to the source.... and they are NOT safe.
  22. Same thing here... only... I also have a hiatal hernia, which he kindly supplied me with a picture of. *BLECH* I have been taking Prevacid daily....and feel a hellofalot better. I never had heartburn or any "obvious" reflux issues, but, I sure can tell when i don't take it! I don't clear my throat as much, don't cough as much, and don't feel as "off" as...
  23. My daughter is Celiac, and also has adhd. She's 5 and quite a handful. We fought and fought to keep her off medication, and dietary modifications helped a lot, but not enough to remove the impulsiveness and hyperactivity. And, she was a danger to herself and others. =( So, we were forced to start medication, and we've seen such a dramatic improvement in...
  24. Mine was close to $2000.00, but my insurance paid all but $30.00 of that. (Well, they wrote off most of it!)
  25. It's my understanding that they usually don't "knock out" adults. They will give small children a general (or local) anesthesia, but adults just get medications that make them forgetful and laid back. I had versed and Demerol. I was told I would be conscious, but sedated. I was sound asleep. =) I remember being wheeled into the room, my doctor said...
